MAY 7, 1963 of two regulars - second base man Chuck Hiller and out fielder Willie McCovey - and utility out fielder Matty Alou. X-rays taken in New York Sunday showed that Hiller had a bone chip fracture of the left wrist. Hiller injured the wrist at Pittsburgh last Wednesday while making a tag at second. i McCovey wrenched h i s ankle while running out a triple in the first game of Sunday's doublehcader with the New York Mets at the Polo grounds in New York. McCovey said nothing about the ankle until he asked Dark to lift him midway through the second game. Trainer Frank Bowman said Hiller would be out "two or three more weeks." Bow man, who treated McCovey's ankle during Monday s off- day and also today, said he was not sure whether Willie will be able to play tonight. Matty Alou's injured knee has been responding to treat ment and he has been seeing action as a pinchhittcr. Dark said he may use Alou sparing ly in the outfield tonight if McCovey s ankle is too tender. Marichal, who has lost twice, closed out the Pitts burgh series Thursday with a masterful five-hit victory. The Giants also seek re venge against the Braves who took three straight from the defending National League champions to close out San Francisco s home stand Apr.l zh. During that stand at Can dlestick Park, the Giants won only 6 of 14 games. However, since headine east the Giants won six in a row before bowing to the Mets the finale of Sunday's doublehcader. After concluding the three- game series here, the Giants head to Los Angeles for the iirst 1963 meeting with the Dodgers whom San Francisco beat in a playoff for the Na tional league title last fall. DeNucci To Take On : Jose Gonzalez New York-UJPD-YounB Joe DeNucci, excellent boxer puncher from Newton, Mass., makes his bid for recognition as a middleweight contender Saturday night in a nationally televised fight with Puerto Rican Jose Gonzales at the Boston Arena. Their 10-rounder stands out on the week's boxing sched ule. Each is 23 years old and an aggressive fighter. Because of his speed, skill and punch, DeNucci is favor ed at 2-1 to beat slugger Gon zales although Jose is ranked 10th among world 160-pound contenders by the World Box ing association and DeNucci is unrated. Giulio Rinaldi of Italy de fends his European light heavyweight title against Ger many's Erich Schoeppner at Rome on Friday. Also on Friday, light heavy weight Von Clay of Phila delphia fights Gustov Scholz of Germany at Berlin. Valley Girl On Linfield Softball Team McMinnville - Elyse Eskew, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Eskew, Medford, is a member of the women's soft- ball team at Linfield college The team is one of the inter collegiate activities sponsored b y the Women's Recreation Association and the women's physical education department for interested Linfield women. Miss Eskew plays the posi tion of right field on the team. Intercollegiate competition is held, and in the first such game of the season, Linfield was defeated by Portland State. The Denver Bears, in last place one week ago, came from behind with two runs in the ninth to defeat the San Diego Padres 7-6 and climb into third place in the tight Southern Division. A throwing error by new San Diego centerfielder Barry Shetrone allowed - Denver's winning run to score. Three singles had scored one run in the inning and Shetrone tried to throw out a runner al third base after the third single but the ball sailed into the Padres' dugout. It is expected to be rescheduled for some time next week. Buffington To Take Part In Ski School Timberline -Lodge A 17- year old Medford High school student. Collier Buffington, is one of 75 skiers from all parts of the country who will par ticipate in the seventh annual Timberline lodge summer racing school, June 17-26. A member of the Rogue Snowmen, Buffington, recent ly spent a week at Sun Val ley, Idaho, to improve his ski technique. He plans to par ticipate in the Golden Rose brace,- a feature of fontanel t annual Rose festival. Terry, own ed by Bob Hissong, Glendale, too the derby stake and Cap tain, owned by Walt Garter, Roseburg, the puppy event. The trial was conducted in the Kenneth G. Denman man agement area of the Oregon game commission. Twenty seven dogs were entered. Hunter Second Leonard Nelson's Hunter was second in the open with Floyd Bubb's King third and Mike Well's Mik fourth. In the qualifying event Bomber, owned by Hetty Na politano and handled by Bob Napolitano was second. King took third and Mik fourth. Tom Richard's Missy gained a merit award. Bubb's Misty took second in the derby and Del Berg mans Happy third. Lynn Shreeve's Lady was second in the puppy stake, Evelyn Kirk's Truly third and Lila Bubo s Tina and Mrs. Kirk s Widgeon were awarded merit certificates. Lila Bubb, handling Misty, and Diane Windsor, with Gay Knight, gained merit awards in the powder puff event. Bob Napolitano, Hissong, Shreeve and Rickard shared .trial chairmanship duties. -. Manager Ralph Houk said not a chance. When questions were raised about Whitey Ford's arm, the Yankee manager said don't worry. And when anyone asked when Mickey Mantle would start hitting, Houk al ways said soon. It looks as if he was- right on all counts. Technically, the Yankees are tied for first place in the American League today with the Kansas City Athletics but the A's had better hurry up and get a picture of that be cause that situation is subject to change on short notice. Mantle enjoyed a perfect night, driving in three runs on three hits in as many times at bat. With the Yanks leading 4-3, he smashed a two-run homer off loser Hank Aguirre (3-3) in the seventh to make the score 6-3. Tom Trcsh, who collected three hits, then unloaded a three-run homer off reliever Paul Foytack in the eight to cap a four-run rally. Bobby Richardson also had three hits and drove in two runs. In (he only otner American League games sceduled, the Chicago White Sox beat Kan sas City, 5-1, and the Los An geles Angels snapped a four game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Only one game was played in the National League, with the Pittsburgh Pirates down ing the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-4. Gary Peters of the White Sox, given his first major league start, made the most of it by limiting the A s to four hits and belting a home run himself. Peters tired after eight in nings, however, and Jim Bros- nan, picked up 24 hours ear lier from the Reds, relieved him In the ninth and set down the A's in order, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Southpaw Ted Bowsficld suffered his fourth defeat against one victory, yielding 10 of the White Sox' 13 hits, including homers by Peters and Mike Hershbergcr Albie Pearson drove in four of the Angels' five runs against the Twins by connect ing for a pair of doubles, both times with the bases loaded.
