of two regulars - second base
man Chuck Hiller and out
fielder Willie McCovey - and
utility out fielder Matty Alou.
X-rays taken in New York
Sunday showed that Hiller
had a bone chip fracture of
the left wrist. Hiller injured
the wrist at Pittsburgh last
Wednesday while making a
tag at second. i
McCovey wrenched h i s
ankle while running out a
triple in the first game of
Sunday's doublehcader with
the New York Mets at the
Polo grounds in New York.
McCovey said nothing about
the ankle until he asked Dark
to lift him midway through
the second game.
Trainer Frank Bowman
said Hiller would be out "two
or three more weeks." Bow
man, who treated McCovey's
ankle during Monday s off-
day and also today, said he
was not sure whether Willie
will be able to play tonight.
Matty Alou's injured knee
has been responding to treat
ment and he has been seeing
action as a pinchhittcr. Dark
said he may use Alou sparing
ly in the outfield tonight if
McCovey s ankle is too tender.
Marichal, who has lost
twice, closed out the Pitts
burgh series Thursday with a
masterful five-hit victory.
The Giants also seek re
venge against the Braves who
took three straight from the
defending National League
champions to close out San
Francisco s home stand Apr.l
zh. During that stand at Can
dlestick Park, the Giants won
only 6 of 14 games.
However, since headine east
the Giants won six in a row
before bowing to the Mets
the finale of Sunday's
doublehcader.
After concluding the three-
game series here, the Giants
head to Los Angeles for the
iirst 1963 meeting with the
Dodgers whom San Francisco
beat in a playoff for the Na
tional league title last fall.
