Time euiiinie.il wi Attitudes of Fair Play, Sportsmanship Urged in Children By DAVID MYDICK UPI Education Specialist Team or individual sports Involve competition and the nature of games encourages a desire to win. The schools generally stress cooperation. Is this contra dictory to the competitive na ture of our society? The aim actually is to develop atti tudes which stress fair play, sportsmanship, and team work along with an effort to win. An individual should learn to be a good loser as well as a humble winner. Gives Falsa Age Consider the case of Fred, a twelve-year-old, who joined the local bowling league and gave a false lower age. Natur ally he was put in with a group of younger children. After several sessions, it was clear that he was going to win several awards. One afternoon Council of Blind To Meet Her Sunday The Jackson Council of the Blind will hold its monthly business session Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. in the Southwest District office, Commission for the Blind, 248 East Stew, art ave. By Jimmy Ilatlo ThEN THERE ARE TIMES WHEN VOO THINK VOU SHOULD TAKE HIM TO THE VET FOR AN EAR TRUMPET-- MEDFORD his father watched one of the sessions. He realized that Fred was bowling with a younger group of boys. The father was concerned. Had Fred's desire to win be come so strong that he lost his integrity? The situation called for a discussion. This attitude towards competition was not healthy, - On the way home from the bowling alley, the father con gratulated Fred on his fine showing. He asked if Fred knew these boys from his class in school. Fred indicated that they were not in his class. After j. little more dis cussion FreU said that the boys were in a lower grade. Explains Fair Competition The talk which followed was aimed at explaining the meaning of fair competition. Fred s triumph was not truly going to be satisfying since he had the unfair advantage of age. At one point Fred seemed confused as he indicated that his mother always said she was 21. The father laughed as he explained this to his son. Of course, the point of this incident is to observe some effects of competition. Fortun ately the father was able to turn the situation into an ex cellent learning experience. Parents should be constant ly on guard for attitudes which lead to an overempha sis on success and winning. Continuous pressure on chil dren to be on top can lead to an improper approach to com petition. Children should learn .that success is most sat isfying when achieved through fair competition and that it is unfair to compete against individuals who may be less able because of age or lack of ability. MEt FORD, Advice To Bachelors Night Baseball Presents For Single By DICK WEST Washington IITPB There is a married woman out on the West Coast who has been cleaning up r e cently by dispensing ad vice to single women. The lady, Hel en G u r 1 e y Brown, wrote a highly suc cessful book called "S e x Wei and the Single Girl" and now she is conduct ing a syndicated column along similar lines. Her qualifications include the fact that she used to be single girl herself. Well, now. I used to be a single man myself and I have been won dering If there might not be market for someone to do lor bachelors what she has done for spinsters. I figure that bachelors must be just as confused about ev erything as single girls are and would welcome a chance to put their troubles into a sympathetic ear. I know that 1 was plenty confused when I was a bach elor and as far as I can tell things haven't changed a great deal since then. I don't, howevir. want to be called a copycat, to I thought I would depart from Helen Gurley Brown's format ana oiler m.y serv ice undent the tills "Night Baseball and the Single Boy."
