'Martha' Called One of Best Musical, Dramatic Productions One of the best dramatic and musical productions to be given in the valley in recent years was presented in Med ford last week end and played to a half-empty auditorium. The production was "Mar tha", the light opera which the Philharmonic Society of Southern Oregon gave Friday and Saturday nights at the Medford Hifh school auditor ium. The music for "Martha" is lyrical and tuneful and it has sufficient plot to support the music. As directed and pro duced by Richard D. Werner and Richard Graham, it had a great deal to offer as enter tainment. The cast of prin cipals was excellent. It mat ters not that of the six prin cipals, five are from southern Oregon. These men and wo men all have fine voices, they are well-trained and they all gave excellent performances. It is true that Werner's or chestra ran into difficulties, but they were mostly over come. Some of the young mu sicians who usually play with the Philharmonic were busy with a school event in Ash land, and on Friday night both the pianist and organist were ill and substitutes were necessary. However, those who were playing rose to the occasion and only once or twice were their deficiencies very noticeable. Costuming Impressive The costuming was impres sive and those worn by the women in some instances downright elegant. The stag ing was very good and the sets well done. The small aud iences both nights were en thusiastic and on all sides could be heard exclamations that it was a pity that such a "good show" was not playing to a full house. And why didn't more south ern Oregon people turn out? Those who tried to find an answer usually came up with this southern Oregon resi dents think they don't like opera. If "Martha" had been advertised as a musical com edyand there is very little difference between this light opera and contemporary mus ical comedy it would prob ably have attracted a large audience, and those who went would have enjoyed them selves. How many know that one of the featured songs In "Martha" is the beloved "Last Rose of Summer", a favorite with many for years and years. It was sung beauti fully Friday and Saturday nights by Sylvia DeVoss, who played the title role. Mrs. De Voss has a truly lovely soprano voice, a nice stage presence and gave a thorough ly pleasing performance. Listening Treat Also this opera has the aria "Ah! So Fair" which every one has heard scores of Limes. As sung by Kenneth Wohn of San Francisco, the tenor who came to Medford to complete the cast of local singers, it was a listening treat. Wohn, who has ah enormous tenor voice, can also sing with ten derness and delicacy, and he was a decided asset to the cast. Director Werner had pre dicted that Elliott Harlow would be a great success as Sir Tristan Mickclford, and he was. Dr. Harlow not only sings very well indeed but has a real flair for comedy. He bumbled about the stage, thoroughly amusing the aud ience as the pompous creature impressed with his own im portance. We hope that Dr. Harlow appears again, and often. Sue Boe of Grants Pass takes the time from a busy life to come to Medford for rehearsals and performances in many musical events, and this is fortunate. Mrs. Boe's contralto voice is beautiful and she makes a fine appear ance on stage. She looked ex Dennis the Menace Coffee is swcthiw xk ceedingly handsome Friday night, especially in the velvet riding habit for the last act. The voices of Mrs. DeVoss and Mrs. Boe blend harmon iously and they complement one another nicely. Well Cast David Deller, who sang the role of Plunkett, is not as well known in Medford, but he was well cast for "Mar tha." Deller's baritone voice is large but mellow and he fitted easily into his role. He and the tenor were impressive in their duet numbers. Here agani, we hope that Deller, who lives in Ashland, finds it possible to appear in other Philharmonic productions. The applause was especial ly warm Friday night for the quartet numbers of the four romantic principals the "Spinning Wheel" song and the "Good-night" quartet. Maynard Hadley was cast in the small role of the sheriff; Mr. Hadley has a large following in southern Oregon who look forward to his stage appearances, and they are not disappointed. Sam Poirier was a footman, Jo Ann Dodge played a farm er's wife and Stanley Tiegs added color to the stage as the innkeeper. The small chorus supported the principals in an efficient and lively manner, six pretty girls appeared as servants and STAR -By CLAY R. urn yfj mar. 2: Your Doily According Ci 5-25-31-36 To develop message for Monday, read words cor respond ing to numbers ot our z.odiac birth TAURUS 1 Motten 3! Tearfully she per suaded her very reluctant husband to go in her place, and purchase a few items she had marked in the store's newspaper ad. "If you have trouble fighting your way to the counter," she reminded her husband at the last moment, "ACT LIKE A LADY!" Republican Chairman Len Hall won the laugh of the evening in Long Island recently with this introduc tion of Richard Nixon: "I want you to meet a charming young lawyer from California. He's had two big television debates one in Moscow, the other in the U.S.A. He WON the one in Moscow." A college class was assigned the task of writing a short, short story with an unexpected ending. One ingenious student came up with the following: "Marry me," he begged. "Not on your life," she replied. And they lived happily ever after. Werner put in many houra adapting the original score to a shortened and revised form more suitable for production by a cast mostly of amateurs. Bruno Pellegrini, one of those ill on Friday night, served as rehearsal pianist un til last week, and was able to play Saturday night. At the piano and organ Friday night were Mrs. Ed Wilcox and Mrs. Mary Lou Harrison, both Grants Pass. Mrs. Wilcox had had but one rehearsal, and ! Mrs. Harrison none yielding ! to frantic calls she came to the auditorium and took part in the performance without an opportunity to study and play the music in advance. Ralph Matlack designed the scenes, they were uuilt by Steve and Jo Ann Dodge, and painted by Matlack and Wil liam Cottrell. The latter, who spends a part of every year in Medford with his mother, acts and directs in New York City theatrical performances for the remainder of the year. He was one of the first early Ashland Shaakespearean fes tival players. Colleen Hoppe trained the dancers and Eleanor Samse was wardrobe mistress. During intermission both nights women of the Phil harmonic guild served coffee and cookies. O.S. 3 GAIEK'H, POLL A N- Activity Guide to the Start. 5-EPT.23 iK cm 11 it 58-67-80-87vg sign. The last entry in the diary of William Moore, written on the day he was shot to death near here, described a warn ing that he might be killed for his anti-segregation "free dom walk." "A couple of men who had talked to me before drove up and questioned my religious and political beliefs. And one was sure I'd be killed for them," Moore wrote. Held Without Bond A formal charge of murder was filed late Saturday against Floyd L. Simpson, 40-year-old father of six. He was held without bond after Eto wah County Sheriff Dewey Colvard received a report on a ballistic test on a rifle own ed by the grocer. Moore was shot in the neck and head with a .22 caliber rifle last Tuesday at a road side park about 13 miles from here. He carried with him a letter protesting segregation which he hoped to present to Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett. To Continut March At Norfolk, Va., Sunday the Student Non-Violent Co ordinating committee said 10 volunteers would continue Moore's march. The civil rights group said it would start its hike to Jackson, Miss from an undisclosed location either Wednesday or Thurs day. The group earlier had ask ed both President Kennedy and Alabama Gov. George Wallace for protection on such a walk. Wallace replied that the walk should not be at tempted.
