MEDFORD, OREGON MCTFORDtTRIBUNT Medford Hosts GP On Tuesday; Crater Entertains Ashland .Southern Oregon confer - ence baseball rivalry contin ues on Tuesday with a single game at Medford and a doubleheader at Central Point. Medford will entertain Grants Pass at 4 p.m. Crater will take on Ashland start ing at 2:30 p.m. The one game is slated here because of school administra tion policy against double- headers on school days. Grants Pass will return for another game on Wednesday after noon. Coach John Kovenz report ed that Stu Young likely wili be the Medford pitcher to morrow with either Bill En- yart or Jack Forde going in the Wednesday clash. For Grants Pass, Coach Ron Mau- er could choose among Jim Thompson, Steve Newman and Jerry McCormack. For Crater Coach Bill Piche reported that Larry Pepper will hurl the game in which John Rhodes pitches for Ash land. Wayne Clay is slated to be on the hill in the other tussle for Comets. Larry Mason will be on hand if re lief is needed. Dave Barger could be Ashland Coach Bill Leybold's pitching choice for one of the contests. Phlpps Out Piche pointed out that both Pepper and Clay did fine work last Saturday. Clay, of course, turned in a no-hltter while Pepper had a two hit ter going into the seventh canto when he allowed two more safe blows to Grants Pass. Rhodes turned in a no- Lewellyn Soars 6-10 Pullman, Wash. -IUPI)- Little Terry Llewellyn, a 5-7, 130 pound junior, soared 6-1034 as Oregon scored an 87 to 57 dual meet track victory over Washington State Saturday. The Ducks' Dave Blunt cap tured the 100-yard dash in 9.8 and the 220 in 21.5. Also turning in top per formances for Oregon were Mel Renfro, who won t h e broad jump in 24-834, and Gerry Moro, who finished sec ond in the pole vault in 15-'s. However, Renfro wrj upset in the 120-yard high hurdles by the Cougars' Jim Allen. Allen was timed in 14.3 and Renfro In 14.8. Oregon will face Oregon State in a two-way meet at Corvallis next Saturday. 1 hitter against Klamath Falls. Coach Kovenz reported that Catcher Ken Phipps may be lost to Medford for some time because of teeth infec tion. Phipps did not make Saturday's trip to Eugene to face the University of Oregon Frosh. Sternberg Vaults 16-5 Philadelphia Wl - Brian Sternberg, a 19-year-old Uni versify of Washington sopho more, today sat on what he regards as a wobbly throne as king of pole vaulters. "This record probably won't last 24 hours," said Sternberg of the 16-foot, 5-inch record he chalked up at the Penn relays here Saturday. "I'll just have to do belter, go higher, to stay in front of the pack. There's too many guys better than I am," he said. Sternberg broke the out door vault mark with a fiber glass "whipstick" on his first try after failing three titles to clear 16 feet, 7 inches. Sternberg's t r e m e n dous leap eclipsed the 16-foot, 4 inches mark set April 10 by John Pennel of Northeast Lou isiana which has not yet re ceived official status. The rec ognized world mark of 16 feet, 2 Va inches is held by Pentti Nikula of Finland, which he posted last June 22. Rodgers, a former NCAA champion from the Univer sity of Houston, sliced five more strokes off par Sunday with a closing round 66 to take a two-stroke victory over Johnny Pott with a 72-hole total of 18-under-par 268. Pott, from Gulf Hills, Miss., nearly matched Rodgers, but a bogey on the 17th hole and a par on the 18th left him with a 68 and a total 270.
