Take a deep breath, hold It, and for four or five seconds sharply contract your stom ach muscles. Now exhale, wait half a minute, and repeat the procedure. This simple exercise, says Dr. Ben E. Wagner of Ber wyin. III., may bring relief if done in 10 or 12 cycles, at least twice a day, and pre ferably lying down. Wagner described the ex ercise, which he calls the "cephalic surge," to 170 lead ing doctors attended a ship board congress of the Pan American Medical association. The idea, Wagner said is to encourage more rapid blood flow through the congested throat and nasal tissues, .since blood is one of nature's prime defense mechanisms. The Illinois doctor said lie had become convinced after 33 years of genera practice that if the "cephalic surge" is practiced faithfully morn ing and evening, it is "of def inite benefit in the preven-1 tion of the common cold," or it may shorten a cold's course. People who have high blood pressure, hernia or are prone to nose bleeds should not attempt the exercise, Wagner said. But otherwise, "it is considered a safe pro cedure." PP&L pdys a weekly prize of S500 for the big geit woodpecker caught pecking fheir coles. In the event of duplicate entries, somebody will get their old woodpecker back but may enter it in next week's contest.
