At Paul Jenny and Rhonda Farfan are pic lured in costumes they will wear for com ing performance of the well-known drama, "Angel Street" to be given by the Thespian troupe at Medford High school. Paul Jenny is cast in the leading role of Mr. Manning ham, and Rhonda Farfan plays Nancy, the maid. The play will open Thursday, April Brilliant Fashion Ball Honors Princess Grace FREDERICK M. WINSHIP United Press International Philadelphia - (LTD - Penn sylvanians hailed P r i n cess Grace of Monaco "one of the world's truly great ladies" Monday night at a brilliant fashion ball that displayed her blonde beauty in a regal setting. The former Grace Kelly of Philadelphia and her husband, Rainier III, "reigned" over the event sponsored by the Philadelphia Fashion Group from a royal box at the head of the Philadelphia Art Mu seum's grand stairway. The princess' hair was co iffed in towering empire style. She wore a stunning blue or ganza Balenciago gown with a diagonal hem ruffle. At her throat, bosom and wrists glis tened a queen's ransom of diamonds and rubies. Tribune in Song "Never, never change! Keep that breathless charm!" was Eddie Fisher's tribute to her in song. Gov. William W. Scranton, who gave her the sponsor's crystal bowl award for fashion leadership, addd this praise: "All Pennsylvanians join in honoring this distinguished daughter of Philadelphia for the gracious and beautiful American image which she projects. We are delighted with this tribute to one of the world's truly great la dies." It was Philadelphia's ball to remember, vying with the colorful fetes for which Rai nier's Monte Carlo is famous. The tickets cost $50 each, a record for the city. The limit ed number of 600 was fully subscribed six week ago and hundreds were turned away. Tate on the stair landing under St. Gauden's famous statue of Di ana. As Marian Anderson sang the U. S. and Monagesque na t i o n a 1 anthems, fireworks were set off on the museum terrace illuminating the hall. Pianist Gilbert Vatrican of Monaco, a protege of Grace's, played, and Fisher sang a 45 minute program of popular songs including "That Face," which he dedicated to the princess. The highlight of the eve ning was an exceptionally el egant fashion show of gowns by Philadelphia-born design ers James Gaianos and Gus tavo Tassell. The show was presented by 22 top models es corted by cadets from the Pennsylvania Military col lege, announced by Betty Furness, and dramatically staged in the lamp-lighted stairs by Walter Hazeltine. Miss Anderson. Gaianos, Tassell, and Fisher were all given "Philadelphia Great awards by the fashion group. Two Arrive From Lebanon Mrs. Lee Fitzwalcr and son Gordon Lee, Lebanon, Ore., are visiting at the home of Mrs. Hah Wayne. 116 Almond street. Mrs. Fitzwater is Mrs. Wayne's granddaughter. OUT! The business meeting was conducted by Mrs. George Polski, president. Mrs. Rich ard Card presented the speak ers, Mrs. Lou Cranston, who gave a brief history of Beta Sigma Phi; Mrs. H. H. Patter son, who spoke on the person al meaning of the sorority, and Mrs. Dalton Gressett, who enumerated the social activ ities held throughout the year Mrs. Card announced that Sunday, April 28, a preferen tial tea will be held at the home of Mrs. Kenn Knack stedt, 91 Renault avenue. The tea will honor the new pledges of spring rushing. The pledge ritual will be May 14. Mrs. Ray Jones gave the cultural program, entitled "People." Mrs. Polski, Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Knackstedt as sisted the hostess with refresh ments. Leaves Hornbrook - James Laffer ty left Sunday to return to Portland. He has been here for the past two months as sisting with the construction of the new home being built by Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Bak er of Portland. Beta Sigma Phi so rority, during a recent meet ing of the chapter held in the home of Mrs. Charles Carey. For the past two years Mrs. Gerow has served as record ing secretary and on the so cial committee for the chap ter. Before joining this group she was an active member in the Grants Pass Exemplar chapter. Mrs. Gerow will be presented an award during the sorority's Founder's day banquet April 30. A mad-halters party was held during the recent session when awards were given for the hat judged most original. Mrs. Helen M. Ashley who wore a hat decorated with a miniature burning smudge pot and pear trees won the award. Mrs. Ashley recently wrote some verses about or chard heating entitled "Owed to Spring." Mrs. William Hartman pre sented the program on Brazil and the Caribbean. Dolls from South America were loaned for the occasion by Mrs. Alan Jewett, local doll collector. R. L. The whole town's going mm Cot- TENDERLY OREGON Iran Will Be Program Topic For Fraternity Ashland - Gamma Theta Upsilon, geography fraternity at Southern Oregon college, will hold an annual banquet Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Kim's restaurant, it was announced by Dr. Roy McNeal and Forrest Lesher, coadvis ers to the organization. An illustrated lecture of the human and geographic fea tures of Iran will highlight the program. Guest speakers for the evening will be Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Fricke, Glen dale, Ore., who lived in Iran for several years working in the Near East Foundations Village Improvement pro gram. Mr. Fricke culminated his work in the country by developing the organization and curriculum of an agricul tural college which the Royal Iranian government has now built on the shores of the Cas pian sea. Mrs Fricke, formerly a Klamath county home demon stration agent, worked with the women and children of over a hundred villages to raise health and educational standards. It was stressed that Iran Is the key interest to geograph ers, as it occupies a position of strategic importance In the Near East and several of the world's major political prob lems centered in or around its borders. Leaves Mrs. Virginia Marvin, twin sister of Mrs. K. L. Mathew son, 302 South Grape street, has just returned to her home in Nampa, Idaho, after spend ing the past ten days visiting here. Annual Guest Day Held by Fortnightly Ashland-Fortnightly Study club's annual guest day pro gram, held April 15 at the home of Mrs. Frances Worth, was preceded by a dessert luncheon. Mrs. Alice Wlllits, president, and Mrs. Herbert E. Specht poured. Introduction of guests took the form of short verses or humorous descriptions. Mrs. Glenn Taylor played two pi ano numbers and Miss Cora Mason and Mrs. Elmo Steven son presented the book review and the short topic. "There's Yeast in the Mid dle East" by Willie Snow Ethrldge is an account of ex periences of the author and her husband when they made a survey of several countries in 1961 as a function of the Ford Foundation.
