MEDFORD, OREGON WEDNESDAY, APRIL IT, ills News About Servicemen NAMED Radioman Seaman Appren tice Terry Tarvin, son of Thayer Tarvin, Sterling Creek rd., Jacksonville, has been named the outstanding mem ber of the year of the Tri angle club of the San Diego j Armed Services YMCA. Tarvin, who is attending ra. dioman school at the U.S. Naval Training center, was active in the Y Men's club of the Medford YMCA while attending Medford H i g h j school. The Triangle club is similar to the Y Men's club. He was chaplain of the Hi Y club here. GRADUATED Airman First Class Floyd D. Van Volkenburgh, Med ford, was graduated recently from the Noncommissioned Officer Preparatory school at Beale Air Force base, Calif. The airman is an aircraft structural repairman in the 456th Organizational Mainte nance Squadron at Beale. COMPLETES COURSE Airman Apprentice Kenton L. Mathcwson, son of the Rev. and Mrs. K. L. Mathcwson, 302 South Grape St., was re cently graduated from the Aviation Structural mechanic hydraulic course at the Naval j Air Training center, Mem phis, Tenn. Prior to this school, he com pleted two weeks at the Avia tion Familiarization school and four weeks in mechanical fundamentals. AT MIDWAY ISLAND Communications Techni cian Third Class Val H. Lake, 311 Haven St., Medford, is serving at the U.S. Naval sta tion, Midway Island. Lake is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. T. Lake, 311 Haven St., Medford. Lake attended Medford High school before entering the Navy in Febru ary, 1960. Portland Woman Declared Guilty Portland - OIPB - Mrs. Star Elaine Wallace, 32, Portland, has been found guilty of man slaughter by a Circuit Court jury. The vote was 10 to 2. Circuit Judge Richard! Burke earlier in the day re- i vcalcd that the two jurors were threatened over the tele-1 phone that they would be ''cut up" if they did not vote for acquittal. He said the calls were made late Sunday night. The jury deliberated five hours. Mrs. Wallace had been charged with second degree murder for the fatal stabbing of her husband. Shell To Resume Coastal Drilling Portland -fflPB- Shell Oil Co. plans to resume test drilling off the Oregon coast May 1, according to vice president S. F. Bowlby. Bowlby said Shell plans to step up its hunt for offshore oil deposits despite the fact that many companies have lost hope in Oregon after 180 dry holes. Technological break through and the failure of western oilfields to meet dc- . mands have spurred the search, he said. He said layers of volcanic matter which covered the sed- ' iments in which oil normally appears may decrease further 1 out to sea. His company plans to explore the continental shelf which extends from 20 to 150 miles off the Oregon coast.
