Desire for To Every Although charcoal cooking has been employed since man first rubbed two sticks to gether, it has enjoyed un precedented popularity in re cent years with the fast rise in backyard barbecues. The present popularity of outdoor cooking originated in California, which generally is conceded to be the source of the simple but mouth-watering dinner of charcoal broiled steak, garlic or cheese sourdough bread, and a mix ed greens salad lopped with bleu cheese or oil - and - wine vinegar dressing. Idea Spreads . Slowly this truly American meal has spread eastward dur ing the past quarter-century until today almost every ham let has a steakhouse that serves up a reasonable facsimile. A home barbecue can cither be contracted for or it can be built as a home handyman project. It can be plain and simple or big and costly , ranging from a portable table lop model available in any housewares store to a "bomb shelter" type that weighs sev eral tons and has warming ovens and other types of con veniences for luscious cook ery. Build Barbecue Building a barbecue will vary to some extent depend ing on the size of the desired structure, but the basic con struction remains the same. An outline of the barbecue should be marked out on the ground, and this should be dug 10 or 12 inches deep. Eight to 10 inches of sand or sand - and - gravel mix is tamped well, and this is top ped with concrete between four and six inches deep, de pending on the size and weight of the barbecue. This will bring the base two or three inches above ground level, for which forms are needed. A level or plumb bob should be used in laying the base and all courses of brick to insure a perfect level. Second Step The second step is the chimney, built with the lev el or plumb bob to be sure it is perfectly vertical, for no one wants a miniature "Tower MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON Barbecue Hamlet in of Pisa'' confronting them Whenever they barbeeue. A hole should be left in the fire box side of the chimney to draw smoke from the fire and up the chimney. The firebox or ashpit can be constructed of block or brick or rock, or a prefabri cated unit can be bought at a building supply outlet. Two or three courses of block are laid (again, make sure each course is level) and then sidewalls arc built up on the two sides, with an iron grate built into the concrete join about a foot above the ashpit. Although a bit more difficult to install but much more satisfactory than the built-in permanent grate is a scries of two or three steel tracks on which a grate can be inserted at varying levels for different types of cook ery. Gas Torch An excellent accessory for every barbecue is an LP-gas torch that will save 15 or 20 minutes of preparation each time you build a fire. This is the same liquefied petroleum gas familiar to all who live on farms or in country homes, in small towns or other rural areas to provide all the com forts of modern gas appliances far beyond city gas mains. A small LP-gas hand torch can be used, or a larger rc- Aluminum Is Used In Home Remodeling Homes remodeled with aluminum arc easier to live in, easier to rent and sell, easier to insure and mortgage. They cost less to heat and cool. And. perhaps the big gest plus of all, they're safer. For aluminum is non-sparking and of course, fireproof. In houses going up today, dozens of aluminum products arc used. Siding, roofing and reflec tive insulation, duct work, doors, windows and custom ized buill-ins, these products need little painting and prac tically no maintenance. New Plastics Aid Home Improvement Fine wooclgrains. marbles. and gleaming travertines are but a few of the handsome effects achieved by the many versatile laminated plastics in use for home improvement. Only the closest inspection of the material discloses that it is a hig'i pressure laminated "veneer." Of particular interest to the home owners is the fact tMt these materials can be ap plied by the do - it - yourself fan, as well as by the profes sional. On walls, laminated plastics may be applied in shower and bathrooms, backsplashes in the kitchen, wall paneling for rooms, on flush doors and as the exterior finish for built-in furniture. It has also proven to be ideal for use on counter and tabic tops, sink lops, break fast nooks, bathroom vanity tops as well as a great many other vertical surfaces. The laminated plastic sheets arc applied directly to a flat surface with an adhesive mas tic. A complete assortment of mouldings in a similar pat tern to the sheets are general ly available for use with the plastic surfacing. The advantages for the homeowner, in the use of plas tic surfacing, are many. It may be cleaned with soap and water, and polished with fur niture polish or liquid wax. Difficult stains can be remov ed with powdered cleansers, and the color remains forever. Spreads America I fillablc tank can be installed j for multi-purpose use. The small hand torch will light charcoal in brief minutes. Not only does the larger LP gas unit serve this same pur pose, but it also can be used for gas cooking, if desired, such as grilling hamburgers or broiling hot dogs for youngsters. And if the evening turns a bit cool, the gas fire can be turned on to bring warmth and cheer to the group gath ered under a starry sky. Wood Siding Does Building Tricks In Many Homes For families who plan to re vitalize their homes by adding a room there's good news about advanced wood siding that is factory - primed for longer - lasting paint surfaces, so says E. M. Willislon. tech nical director for lumber products of Weyerhaeuser company, lacoma. Wash. Williston announces that new factory - priming of wood siding provides scientific con trol of paint thickness of the vital prime (first) coat. If the first coat on the wood is too thick, there is a possibility the bond may be less than ideal. If the coat is too thin, protec tion is less than maximum. Uses Many Besides providing an excel lent base for subsequent field coats for long - lasting beau ty, the factory priming of wood siding also offers other advantages. The prime coat protects the wood until finish paint is ap plied. Since all surfaces (front, back, edges) arc primed, there is extra protection against "wicking action," damage from outside water wind blown inward. Highest quality primers arc used in the factory. Lower Cost Lower total cost for labor "and materials, better finish coat coverage and longer paint life. Good construction and fin ish painting practices need to be followed, of course, if benefits of the advanced priming are to be realized, he explains. Since fiffal coats arc applied after the room addition is built, there is com plele freedom of exterior col or. The color can be selected either to match or to harmo nize with the original house. Primed wood sidings and suggestions for their use are readily available at local re tail lumber dealers. Hl LaW w ' W WEDNESDAY. APRIL 17, 1883 UNLOAD GRAIN Warsaw. "Char-Glo" Broilcr-Barbci-uc by Wate King-Universal Properly Planned Patio Can Be Joy If you arc considering a re treat for relaxation in the backyard - a little planning can go a long way toward capitalizing on the advantages of out door living. "Whether it's simple or elaborate, kidney - shaped or round, made with flagstone, concrete or brick, careful planning will help make a finished patio much more comfortable," says a noted al thority. Simple Rules H. J. Baker, remodeling spe cialist for Allied Chemical's Barrett Division offers a few simple points about patio con struction: Location can be important depending upon the uses plan ned for the patio. "For exam ple, if it is to be used ex tensively for outdoor cook ing and eating, it is usually best to locate it fairly near the kitchen door," says Baker. "Even a complete meal, such as a barbeque, can be cooked outdoors, but don't forget the food, plates, etc., all must be carried from the kitchen. "Sun-worshipers" who wish to bask in the backyard will wish to consider the best pos sible unshaded location. Those who prefer the shade should also include this factor in their planning. Lighted Patio A lighted patio may make summer evenings more enjoy able. If electricity is to be wired to an outlet on the pa tio, it is always best to have the job done by a profession al. A family with small chil dren may desire to keep their play area separate from the patio. This way the whole family can enjoy the yard at the same time. A locker of some sort, in which games such as badminton and cro quet can be stored when not in use. can provide valuable stor age space. A locker also may provide excellent storage I space for lawn furniture, bar beque grilles, charcoal and the other accessories to out door living. Use Awning When planning a patio ad jacent to the house, Baker suggests attaching an awning made of rigid vinyl building panels that can be fitted over a lightweight metal or wood frame. The panels can be ei ther translucent or opaque, ribbed or flat and installed in colors that blend with the exterior of the house. They can be used in varieties such as altehnate translucent and opaque panels or in different colors to provide a bright ap pearance. If privacy is desired an at tractive fence of the vinyl building panels can easily be attached to a redwood or met al frame. The panels are in combustible, resist corrosion and arc not affected by chemi cal agents used in garden and insecticide sprays. They can easily be washed clean with a garden hose. Who ever has enough stor age space? There are few who can boast of it, according to a just - published guide to typical household storage problems and their solutions. Prepared in cooperation with four leading educators in the home economics field, the new 16-page booklet is intended for all of those who are interested in using home storage space to the maxi mum. Titled "Put Your Storage Problems on the Shelf," the il lustrated guide discusses ways to create more storage space and how to make the most of space already available. Tech niques and principles of stor age planning, within the framework of better home management, are especially related to today's "compact" home floor plans with cor responding lack of built-in storage areas. Water Softener Becomes a Must Homeowners in "hard wa ter" areas are more and more making installations of water softeners high on their "must do' improvement list. The Water Conditioning Research Council reports that home owners can count the savings in dollars and cents when they use water soften ers. The Council says: "The average amount of hardness of water throughout the United States is ten grains and just seven grains of hard ness costs the average fami ly of four $24 more a year in soap." Builds Seal Hard water also builds up scale on the inside of water pipes faster than soft water ever does. Over a period of time, a quarter-inch of scale could reduce the flow of wa ter. Water pipes encrusted with scale become insulated and don't deliver heat effi ciently. A water softener will help save your fuel bill. Softened water is a better cleaner than hard water and is easier on your clothes. For example, softening ten grain water makes a thirty-five per cent increase in longevity for linens. 3x6x18 Mahogany Veneer . $1.49 4x8x14 Natural Fir V-Groove $2.99 4x8x18 Hardboard $1.79 4x7x14 Hardboard Paneling $2.99 Wainscot Paneling (Masonite Prefinished) Its Sturdy and Durable 4x4x'4 ONLY CORRUGATED GALVANIZED IRON 10' Sheets ea. $2.70 17 Sheets ea. $3.24 14' Sheets ea. $3.78 16' Sheets ea. $4.32 CLOSE-OUT 4x8xV4 Colonial Mahogany Paneling $3.99 Amerock Cabinet Hinges ...2 pair.... 69c Amerock Cabinet Pulls 2 for. .. 69c Boysen Flat Wall Paint. 2 Quarts . $1.98 NEW 8'x7' (Lodi) STEEL GARAGE DOOR (Complete With Hardware) 55M Regular $59.95 J.
