New Refrigerator In Old House Planning There's a right place and plenty of space for every kind of food in a modern elec tric refrigerator - freezer. A 1963 model can provide far more food storage space than an older unit without occu pying any more floor area. Thin Design Thinner, more efficient in ulatiun and better engineer ing are responsible for adding cubic footage inside the new electric refrigerator - freezers without gobbling up valuable kitchen floor space. Thinner walls, squared - off corners. and doors that open within the width of the new units all contribute to their "space age" qualities. Freezer sections in which frost never forms mean more food storage space, too. Today's electric refrigera tor - freezers all have a sleek, built-in look with a decided contemporary flavor. Kits are also available with some mod els lor an actual built-in instal lation. yard mind trees for shade, screens, or ac cents of color and form; shrubs and evergreens to en hance the architectural lines of the house. Gardens and shrub borders should be planned and not scattered hit or miss about the property. Notice other houses you pass by. Some will have a quiet charm, others stand out disturbingly. The architecture mfty be equally good, but plants and the manner in which they are used make the difference. Difficult It is more difficult to plant the contemporary house with its long low lines, than the conventional house. Do not destroy the lines your archi tect has created, or chop up the house into bits and sec tions by overuse of conical evergreens. Keep planting under long picture windows low, and con form to the lines of the house by using low material such as ground covers. To add height and softness place a flowering tree a few feet from the, house, not against It, Large windowlcss areas may need to be broken up by an individual plant or grouping of plants. Get Quality The first step in planning and planting your home is to locate a source of first class plant material. Buy at reput able nurseries where you know plants are properly dug, correctly labelled, and free from disease. Trained nursery men know the facts concern ing season and type of bloom, and the hardiness and fitness of their plant material. From them, and from cata logs and books, learn all you can about the plants which appeal to you. Ultimate size, hardiness, and growth habits arc of the utmost importance Fun in the Sun Stirs Interest in Planting B 5 Trees First Budget your planting by putting in shade and flower ing trees first, followed by other slower growing ma terial. Trees, more than any other part of your planting, will make your house look as though it belonged. Start out with at least ten to 15-fect shade trees, for even these will give you little enough shade. Purehasc flowering trees in smaller sizes, if de sired, but for immediate ef fect they should be six to eight feet tall. Nurserymen will recom mend and demonstrate plants to fit the geometric outlines you have selected. Take care with your design and come out with very attractive land scaping for your home. Remodel Kitchen, Get Better Price Changing an old-fashioned kitchen into an attractive, ef ficient home-making center will make an older home a far plcasanter place in which to live, work and entertain. It will also increase the tcshIc value of the house if the lime should come to move. Remodeling the kitchen will make it possible to Install a built in electric range, which gives a distinctly con temporary look while saving the homemakcr the anguish of watching, probing, and guessing that goes with cook ing on an out-of-date stove. Wide Choice The variety of automatic electric built-in cooking units available today gives a wide choice of kitchen arrange ment. The baking center can be separated from the surface- cooking area, and extra sur face units can be built into t A great new era of robust indoor - outdoor living will contribute more physical fit ness and family pleasure through gardening, is predict ed by the American Associa tion of Nurserymen. The indoor outdoor living concept has grown steadily in the past decade, but it is ex pected to grow far more rap idly in the next few years. Total sales of trees and shrubs have hit a new peak every year for the past 15 years and still arc increasing. Mere indoor - outdoor living today is getting more people out doors with healthful results. End Drabness Expert planting and land scaping will bring an end to the drabness of much present-day housing, in which the land is not conserved with "anv type Don't spend all your time I snack section for teen-age re- and money along the front of frig era tor raids and grown-up the house. Carry your plan 'guest nights. Pian Before You Start on Project Before you tackle any bltious", professional project for home improve ment, be sure you have the proper know-how and equip ment. Then, make a complete lay out before you start, think it out-in detail on paper befure you gel under way. Also, be sure the materials arc available and fully satis factory or adequate. Sor e Pitfalli Some of the pitfalls to be avoid are these: Be sure you put appliances where they are accessible; and similary, make certain that your completed project will not render some already installed appliance valueless. A heater in the wronp lo cation is worthless-; a fire place improperly designed may not work; a floor that isn't built right will be "boun cy." When you're buying appli ances, electrical goods, wir ing, etc., be sure they meet legal requirements. Salcmen's advice is not be relied on and illegal equipment is sold in unethical stores. Check City For your own peace of mind, it is well to check with the city inspector on such equipment. Never conceal work requir ing inspection and never put any appliance, wiring, plumb ing, etc.. Into use until the job is approved by the city inspector. These men want to help people who do their own work and will give advice and instructions. designed - for living plant ings. "This new indoor outdoor living will make home life so rich and attractive that people will spend much more of their incomes on their home properties rather than spending on things that take them away from home, often without any lasting benefits," the nursery group states. 'To maintain housing val ues, to prevent the ruinous waste of some housing de velopments which degenerate into slums in 10 or 12 years, housing must be planned so the whole residential area, including the land, will re main beautiful and well-preserved for the longest possi ble time. When the land is not improved for living by proper planning and plant ing, home values depreciate at much faster rates. The in door - outdoor concept con serves the land as well as the house and uses both for wholesome living. Conserve Land "11 is, however, more than increasing property values," the association adds, "it is full realization that we cannot continue to move to new housing developments forever there is not enough land available. Now Is the time when wc must conserve all lands, especially in and sur rounding urban areas. "Much can be accomplished by planning housing for more permanent values and better living," it is stated. "The Indoor-outdoor idea helps great ly in accomplishing this. More over, it is the most satisfying and healthful way to live for practically everyone, with more wholesome family fun, as well as more physical fit ness through the gardening effort, which, the association concludes, 'does more for the gardener than it does for the plants.'
