PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Sao Paulo, Brazil - (UPD -Cuba will take part in the Pan American games, but its ac tivities will be restricted to the playing field only. The arrival of 57 athletes 3, cioie I Tuesday confirmed Cuba's in tention to participate in the games which get under way Saturday. Earlier, Cuban of ficials had accused the United States of using illegal meas ures to bar the Castro ath letes from the competition. On arriving her e. the spokesman for the delegation pledged that all athletes and the 15 coaches would conduct themselves "in aecor d a n e e with Olympic principles and regulations." Friendly Assurance This was interpreted as a j friendly assurance that Cuba WlU concentrate its efforts on i winning gold medals and not en winning converts. Another problem regarding the Cuban athletes was that of alleged professionalism and authorization for them to com pete in the games was placed on a conditional basis pending an investigation. Meanwhile, advance delega tions from the 21 other coun tries began arriving Tuesday and by the time the opening ceremonies are conducted some 3.000 athletes will be in attendance. Included among Tuesday's arrivals, in addition to the Cubans, were the first group of U S. athletes and the Ca nadian and Venezuelan contingents.
