the playing field only.

This was interpreted as a j
friendly assurance that Cuba

Another problem regarding
the Cuban athletes was that
of alleged professionalism and
authorization for them to com
pete in the games was placed
on a conditional basis pending
an investigation.
Meanwhile, advance delega
tions from the 21 other coun
tries began arriving Tuesday
and by the time the opening
ceremonies are conducted
some 3.000 athletes will be in
attendance.
Included among Tuesday's
arrivals, in addition to the
Cubans, were the first group
of U S. athletes and the Ca
nadian and Venezuelan contingents.
