Fradarlck Lee MallUh (Knackiladt photo) Talent Miss Nancy Sue Wilson became the bride of Frederick Lee Mcllish in 4 o'clock afternoon rites April 6 in the Medford First Pres byterian church. Dr. D. K. West, and the Rev. Bernard E. Andrews of the Medford First Baptist church perform ed the double ring ceremony. About 300 guests attended, making the event one of the largest of early spring The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Wilson, Foss road. Talent, and the bridegroom is a son of Dr and Mrs. Frederick Lee Mel lish, 117 Black Oak drive Medford. Miss Randi Peterson, Oak land, Calif., was maid of honor and bridesmaids were Miss Sharon Mellish, a sister of the bridegroom; Miss Ann Adcan, Salem, Miss Sue Ross, Corvallis, and Miss Sharon Moore, Ashland. Wilton White Jr., was best man and seating guests were Bruce Bromley, Thomas White, Arne Wolfe; and Da vid Jones of Corvallis. Mr. Wilson escorted his daughter to the altar and gave her in marriage. The bride's gown of slipper satin was designed with long point ed sleeves, a sweetheart neck line, and a back panel the full length of the skirt. Self material roses were attached to the back waistline. The bridal bouquet was of steph anotis and pink rosebuds. The bride's pearl and dia mond pendant was a gift from the bridegroom. The attendants wore pale pink sheer gowns with cum merbunds and A-line skirts. Their small pink hats and veils had been made by the bridegroom's mother. They carried bouquets similar to that of the bride. The bride's mother wore a rose colored silk dress with matching hat and accessor ies and the bridegroom's mother was dressed in an ice blue frock with white acces sories. Their corsages were of white carnations and pink rosebuds. Mrs. Bernard Andrews fur nished the music and accom panied Miss Julie Gandt who sang the wedding songs. About 200 guests were at the reception given by the bride's parents in the church reception room. Pink and white decorations were used and nink rnjtphnrtc I centered the reception tables. Mra. Dennis Barr register ed the guests and Mrs. Monty Penwell poured the coffee Mrs. White was in charge of girts and presiding at the punch bowl was Miss Gandl. Mrs. Dennis Smith, Sacramen to, aunt of the bride, served the wedding cake. From out of town were grandparents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Wilson, Portland, and the bride- I groom's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Billson, Grand Ronde, Ore.; Randy and Brad Smith, cousins of the bride, Sacramento: Mr. and Mrs. James Wilson, Grants Pass, uncle and aunt of the bride, and Mr. and j Mrs. Robert Billson, Eureka.1 traveling the bride wore a white wool suit with while fur collar and her accessor ies were bone and beige col ors. They now are living at 3100 Philomath road, Corvallis. Ik 1 Mill Barbara Praiton Engagement Is Announced Announcement of the en gagement of Miss Barbara Preston to Jack Gler, West Frankfort, 111., is made by her mother, Mrs. Zona Preston, Spokane, Wash., formerly of Medford. Miss Preston is also the daughter of the late Fred Preston. Miss Preston, a graduate of Medford High school where she received an Elks Lumber company scholarship, is to graduate from Whitworth col lege in June and plans to teach in the Rainier, Wash., public schools in the fall. Mr. Gicr is a graduate of Southern Illinois university and is a music teacher in the Rainier Bchools and In Buck- Icy, Wash. The wedding is planned for June 14 in Buckley, Wash. Miss Brewold, James Emmens Are Engaged Mr. and Mrs. Earl Bre wold, 2668 Jacksonville highway, announce the en gagement of their daughter, Patricia Arlenc, to James J. Emmens, son of Mrs. Thomas H. Emmens, 5 North Modoc avenue, and the late Dr. Em mens. The bride - elect attended Oregon Technical Institute and plans to enter Southern Oregon college in the fall The bridegroom-elect attend ed Oregon Technical institute and Southern Oregon college where he plans to return in the fall. The pre sentations will be Friday and Saturday evenings, April 26 and 27, and curtain time is 8:15 p.m. 'Father' Will Be Announced The Jackson County Father of the Year will be an nounced during the annual dinner for Jackson County Stockmen, Thursday, April 18 in the Central Point Grange hall. The four candidates for the honor are to be present. The candidates are J. W. Bigham, Eagle Point cattle man: C. C. Hoover, Eagle Point and Medford farmer and civic leader: Floyd Char ley. Central Point cattleman, and the Rev D Kirkland West, pastor of First trcsby tcrial church. Medford. The annual event is spon sored by the Jackson County Cow Belles, auxiliary to the group. A potluck dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m. The Cow Belles will furnish the beef which will be prepared by North's Chuck Wagon rest aurant, as a complimentary gesture of the management. Auxiliary members from different areas are to take pie and a salad Table service will be required. The father of the year pro gram was begun five vc.irs ago by the Oregon Cow Belles Plans are also being made by the local group to honor the first baby to be born in the county on Father's day This is the most ambitious presentation ever undertaken by the society and those tak ing part have been busy working and rehearsing for the past several months. As the action of the story takes place during the reign of Queen Anne of England in Ihe early 19th century, the costumes and sets are very el aborate. Bqside the principals thee? will be the usual chorus and an additional chorus of serv ing maids. A group of danc ers from the Colleen Hope Studio will also take part. Richard Graham. Ashland, is- stage director and musical director is R. D. Werner. Med ford. He will conduct the or chestral accompaniment for the singers. Tickets will be placed on sale a week before the per formances: all seats will be reserved. Rands Announce Betrothai News; Karnes loiven Wilderville - Mr. and Mrs Homer Rand ha-e announc ed tile engagement of their daughter. Miss Saudi Rand, to Gerry Cunningham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer C. Cun ningham. Laytonville. Calif. Miss Rand is a senior at Grants Pass High school. Mr. Cunningham has serv ed 15 months overseas with the United States Navy and is now employed at Byrd's market, Grants Pass. The wedding has been plan ned for September. Engagement dinner parties were held at the Candle room, Medford hotel, at the Umpqua room. Roscburg ho tel, and In the Rand home i on Fish Hatcherv road Miss Olson In Contest Miss Joy Olson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Olson, 100 South Grovcland avenue, is one of the ten semi-finalists competing for the honor of queen of the Junior Prom at the University of Oregon. The prom will be held April 19. Pianist Peter Nero will present a concert and provide music for dancing that night. His music will serve as a background for the crowning of the Junior Week end queen. The queen will preside over the 36th annual Mothers' Week end and Junior Week end events May 10 through 12. Miss Olson is a political sci ence major at the university. Student To Compete In Contest Jarl Dyrud, son of Dr. and Mrs. Justin L. Dyrud, 333 Hillhouse avenue, will com pete Saturday, April 20 in the finals of the Virginia Brown Music fund contest In the Sa lem Woman's club house in Salem. The contest is being conducted by the Oregon Federation of Women's clubs, which will award a $200 scholarship to the winner. The student, a vocalist, was a winner in the first district contest held in mid-March in Ashland. Sponsored by the Junior Women's club of Med ford, he is a senior student at Medford High school. In Salem he will compete with winners from the eight districts in the state. Mrs. David H. Cameron, Salem, music division chair man of the federation, is making arrangements for the event. The scholarship is to be used in an Oregon school of the recipient's choice. Judges will be from throughout the state. The timekeeper will be Mrs. H. P. Grant, Salem, and Mrs. A. E. Ulhnan, Salem, chairman of the fourth district of the Vir ginia Brown Music scholar ship committee, will greet the contestants. A tea hour will follow the contest with Mrs. James A. Garson, president of the Sa lem Women's clubs, heading the committee. Friends of the contestants, clubwomen and their friends are invited. Student Paintings On Exhibit at Rogue Gallery A reception, opening the local exhibit of art entries in the Oregon division of the General Federation of Wom en's club 1963 Art Talent con test for high school seniors, will be held Tuesday. April 16, at the Rogue Gallery, 220 West Main street. The reception will be from 8 to 10 p m. and all interested persons, e s p e c i a 1 ly high school students, arc invited to attend. Among the paintings on ex hibit will be "On to Greener Pastures," by Miss Janis Re nee Livingston, 17. a student at Hillsboro Union High school, who is 1963 state win ner. She is a student of Ern est Weaver. Tom Semple. Medford, was the 1962 winner. Also on exhibit will be "Forest at Sunset" by Don ald J. Koehl, South Salem High school, winner of the Oregon Federation of Wom en's Clubs Penny art fund scholarship. The winners of both con tests were announced last week by Mrs. Gene F. Cham berlain. Medford, art division chairman of the Oregon Fed eration of Women's club. Scholarship Awards The Penny Art Fund schol arship of S200 is awarded each year by the OFWC to a senior high school student. This is to be used in an Ore gon college. The 1963 Art Talent con test is sponsored by the Gen eral Federation of Women's clubs. The state winners' paintings will be exhibited at the 1963 GFWC convention June 10 to 14 in Milwaukee, Wis. And, as in the past, Hall mark Cards will provide S600 scholarship for advanced study at any accredited art school or university to the three national winners. All entries for these con tests were judged last week at the Rogue Gallery by Eu gene Bennett, nationally known artist; Ben Trow bridge Jr.. exhibition chair man of the Rogue Valley Art j association and member of the board of directors: and Walter Pappas. architect, member of the firm of Edson and Pappas. Ladies of Elks Chairman Opens New Club Year Mrs. Wayne M. Turpin will open her year as chairman of the Ladies of Elks at the Tues day, April 16, meeting of the group at 1 p.m. in the Elks club downstairs lounge. Other officers assisting Mrs. Turpin will be Mrs. Frank W, Payne, vice chairman; Mrs: Edith G. Grigsby, treasurer; Mrs. C. William Booth, secre tary; Mrs. Fred B. Sweeney, hospitality; Mrs. Herbert L, Alford, membership, and Mrs. Yvonne M. Dalen, decorations. A salad luncheon will be served. Hostesses for the day will bs Mrs. Ralph S. Dippel, Mrs. John S. Council Elects Ashland - Beta Sigma Phi City council met last week at the home of Mrs. Leo Zupan to elect officers for the coming year. Mrs. Zupan was chosen president and will serve with Mrs. M. K. Wadley, vice pres ident; Mrs. Jim Conklin, sec retary; and Mrs. Earl Kirby, treasurer. Ceremony At Home Weds Pair Central Point Miss Nancy Elizabeth Brown became the bride of Richard Anderson Barnctt in a ceremony at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William L. Smith, Scenic avenue, Central Point. Mr. Barnett is a son of Mrs. Nelia Barnctt, 123 Church street, Ashland, and B. A. Barnett, Sacramento, Calif. The Rev. D. E. Millard of the New Age church. Eagle Point, officiated at the April 7 rites held at three o'clock in the afternoon. Some 30 rel atives and friends attended. The bride, given in mar riage by her father, wore a light blue and white striped suit with white accessories. She carried a nosegay of white carnations and blue iris. She was attended by Miss Catherine Brown, her sisler. who wore a pink two piece dress with white accessories. She carried a nosegay of pink carnations. Ralph Barnett served as best man for his brother. Following the double ing ceremony a reception was held. Mrs. Smith, mother of tiie bride, cut and served the wedding cake. Mrs. Carl Vogel, Ashland, an aunt of the bride, was in charge of the guest book. The couple is at home at the Parkview Apartments, Winburn Way, Ashland. The bride is a graduate of Medford High school and at tended the University of Ore gon. She is employed by the Northwest Bookkeeping Serv ice in Ashland. Mr. Barnett attended Ashland High school and Southern Oregon college. He is employed by Sambo's in Medford.
