B SUNDAY, APRIL 14. 1963 Grants Pass, Bend Capture In Metro, Class A Hayward MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON University of Oregon, Eu gene Favored defending champion South Salem was dethroned here yesterday aft ernoon when the Grants Pass High Cavemen and the Bend Lava Bears garnered the championships in the 27th an nual Hayward track and field relays. Grants Pass, reportedly hampered by injuries, sound ed a warning to mid and late season rivals by taking the metropolitan division banner. But, the Cavemen had to fight off the bid of hometown North Eugene to claim top prize. The southern Oregon power totaled 48 points. North Eu gene had 47 Vi. South Salem, the 1082 crown-holder, was third with 43"2. Medford and Norlh Sa lem followed, each with 34J2. Bend won the Class A hon ors by nine points over seven- times-in-a-row victor Cottage Grove. The Bears had 55 points and the Lions 48. Pen dleton took third with 36 and Crater fourth with 32'... One record fell in the met ro class when South Salem bettered its last year's two mile mark by one-tenth of a second. The new time is 8:03.8. Cottage Grove's Jim Hen ningsgaard set a new mark of 12 feet, 8 inches in the Class A pole vault, and Bend estab-, lished a new mile relay time ford put, third in the broad jump, fourth in the distance mediey. fifth in the 440 and sixth in the javelin. Klamath Falls scored a pair of runs in the fourth extra frame, the 11th, to beat Cra ter 6 to 4. Crater rallied from an 0-3 deficit in the concluder to nip the Pelicans 8 to 4. Medford is now 6-0 In the league and the only unbeaten team. Klamath Falls Is 3-1, Crater 4-4, Ashland 1-3 and Grants Pass 0-4. The Pelicans used singles by Oary Smith and Bud Bath in the top of the 11th for two runs which broke with Crater. There walk, u groundout, a sacrifice by Lanny Guyer and a stolen base in the panel. Klamath pitchers Gary Ben son and Rich Jackson fanned 18 and walked five in the contest. Crater's Larry Pepper whiffed 10 and free-passed three. Crater got three runs In the fifth inning on a single by Pat Pepper, two walks, an er ror, a steal and a groundout. KF went on top again In the sixth but Crater got two runs in the bottom of the stanza on a triple by Mike Glines, sin gles by Neil Rivenburg and Lou Alvarez, Larry Mason's sacrifice and a groundout. Alvarez had two hits In the game. Crater pitchers Wayne Clay and Mason struck out five and walked four while Benson and Jackson re corded four fans and one base on balls. Bill Enyart pitched four hit ball for Medford In the Ashland starter. He Issued only one base on balls while striking out seven. Medford got eight hits off Ashland's John Rhodes and Dane Smith who gave up seven walks while fanning Ihe same num ber. Gary Miller tripled for Med ford. lie and Mike Barnes each had two hits. South won the seventh grade tussle 67 to 10. Terry Pierce paced the Pointer eighth with victories in the 150 and 330-yard runs and the broad jump. Glenn Gueringer won the pole vault and 660, while Joe Cavin took the shot put and javelin. Grants Pass' Beckwith won the low hurdles and 75. South won all firsts in the seventh grade competition. the 880. It was sixth in the shot put with 134-14 and sec ond in the broad jump with 59-llVi. Tim Murray of Med ford heaved the discus 134-4 for third and Don Driskell was fifth in the high hurdles for the Wind. Crater's team of Paul Bran som, Mike Mowry, Denny Ry erson and Gary Wald won the 440 Class A relay. Crater got a second in the broad jump at 57-1, fourths in the 880 and mile, a tie for third in the j high jump, and a fifth In the shot put at 132-21. and a tie fifth in the shuttle hurdles, j John Harris had a second place discus heave of 141-7.
