OREGON 1957 Award of Merit Winner CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council (ADDITIONAL CHURCH NEWS ON PAGE 8A) Officers Arrive to Hold Salvation Army Institute Visitors from San Francis-1 co and Portland will visit at the Salvation Army this week end. Brigadier and Mrs. David W. Moulton from territorial headquarters in San Francis co will visit Medfora lor inc time to conduct an institute for local officer's (lay leaders) from Medford, Klamath tans and Roseburg. About 40 per sons in charge of youth activi ties for the three cities will attend. Brigadier Moulton has served in the New York Met ropolitan area, the Southwest Ohio division, Southern New The 10 a.m. Sunday service at the Beatty and Edwards st. building will feature mem bers of The Salvation Army Sunday school and an Easter message by MaJ. William Ricken. At 7 p.m. an Easter cantata by the teen-age department will be featured. The public is invited to all services on Easter day. The World Wide Mission ary work of The Salvation Army in 88 countries will benefit from the three special offerings as Easter Sunday brings to a close the World Wide "Self-Denial" effort for 1063. Easter Sunday is also a time of receiving new mem bers into the ranks of the Sal vation Army. At the 5:30 a.m. service, both junior and sen ior soldier's will bo enrolled by Brigadier Moulton, at the 10 a.m. service Major Ricken will officiate at the dedication of infants. BRIG. D. W. Sessions will be held at The Salvation Army building at Beatty and Edwards sts., from 0:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 'Easter Parade' For Peace Noted The Jackson County chap ter, Oregon United Nations as sociation, Is sponsoring "Easter Parade" for peace in Medford this week end. On Page 3A of today's Mail Tribune there is an Easter ap peal in the form of a petition to President John F. Kennedy calling for a nuclear test ban. Persons who agree with the appeal, may sign it, and fol lowing church services Easter, may take It to the special mail box in the park on the east side of the public library. Persons unable to join the "Easter Parade" may mail the signed appeal directly. Southern Baptists List Easter Events The Rev. G. O. Skaar, pastor of First Southern Baptist, 704 Lozier lane, will have' "Since Christ Has Risen" for the topic for his Easter sermon Sunday. The adult and youth choirs will combine for the song service. They will sing "Low in the Grave He Lay." Robert Kinsman will direct the sing ing. In the evening (he pastor will speak on "Christian Stewardship." The youth choir will sing. Final plans are being made for the 15th anniversary unci homecoming at the church which is scheduled April 21. Invitations have been sent to former pastors and members of the church and a dinner for 250 members and guests is being planned. The parking facilities arc being enlarged and improved, it was noted. A nursery will be provided for children under four years at all services. Frederick Ross Evans will preach at the First Christian church. The combined carillon and youth choirs will sing "He Arose" at the 8:30 a.m. serv ice. At the 10:55 a.m. service the women's choir will sing "Easter Song." The Chi Rho Fellowship will have an Easter breakfast at the Bill Brooks' home fol lowing the sunrise services At their 6 p.m. fellowship meeting Margaret White and Gene Taylor will present the study and worship. The showings will be scheduled each half hour from noon until the last show ing ai o p.m., according to Ulair Schiffman. manager. The building is open daily throughout the year except on Sunday. Groups may make arrangements for appoint ments by contacting Schiffman. The showing includes the story of the painting, and of The Last Supper. Community Methodist Easter Service Noted Gold Hill "The Triumph of Unconditional Love" will be the title of the Easter ser mon message by the Rev Lochlen Gregory, pastor of Gold Hill Community Meth odist church, Sunday, at 11 a.m. The choir will sing Isaac watts, "Give To Our God Im mortal Praise," during the worship hour. New members will be received. Church school will be held at the 9:45 a.m. hour as usual and classes will each take part in the presentation of an Easter program. Five Simultaneous Events Set at Church of Nazarene Five simultaneous sessions will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly St., Sunday morning. The combined church school and morning worship service will be held from 0:45 to 11:30 a.m. and will be di rected by the various depart ment supervisors of the Sun day school. The kindergarten children will hold an Easter program of recitations and songs fol lowing the usual order of their department meeting. The Easter story will be pre sented by Mrs. Harold Steel. The primary department's Easter program will be by the children and a film on the res Free Methodist Notes Easter Events The Free Methodist church will observe Easter Sunday with a program presented by the Sunday school and Ihe Easter message by the pastor. The Sunday school will meet for a short session from 0:45 to 10:25 a.m. to acquaint the visitors with the classes and teachers. The Sunday school will present the Easter program at 10:30 a.m. with the prc-school department sing ing a group of Easter sings. Sanner, who is currently holding meetings in Trinidad, West Indies. During the worship por tion of the service, the sanc tuary choir will sing "I Will Sing of My Redeemer." The Rev. James Gordon, pastor of the Mt. Pitt Avenue Church of the Nazarene, will give the Easier message titled "The Greatest Declaration." The sanctuary choir will pre sent Ihe cantata, "Hallelujah! What A Savior!" by John W. Peterson, Sunday, at 7 p m. A nursery will be available during each service. ,- Community Services To Be Held at First Methodist Easter community services this year will be held in First Methodist church. Dr. George Roseberry will preach on "The Living Christ" at all three services, at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m. All Easter worship pers of the community are in vited to attend any of these services. A nursery will be provided for all services. Michael Johnson will sing "Art Thou the Christ" at 8 a.m. with the children's altar choir and youth choir singing "Awake Thou Wintry Earth" and "The Whole Bright World Rejoices Now" as the an thems. The chancel choir will sing Central Church Lists Services Central Church of Christ, 1440 South Oakdale ave., will have worship services Sunday at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Minister John V. Heberling will speak at both morning services on the theme "Facing Death with Jesus." Music will be provided at both hours by a girls' choir under the direction of Mrs. Linda Anderson. They will sing "Where Have Ye Laid Him?" Central Church will have as its guests for the day Mr. and Mrs. Robert West, mis sionaries to Japan. The Wests will speak to the junior wor ship service which will meet only at the II a.m. hour. This service is for all children of elementary school age. Mr. West will give the 7:30 p.m. message entitled "The Resur rected Jesus In Japan." The children of the Bible school will present a pro gram of song and recitation at the 9:45 a.m. Bible school op ening. Classes for all ages of children and adults will fol low the program. "Thine Is the Kingdom For ever and Ever" and "Christ the Lord Is Risen Today" at 9:30 a.m. The chancel choir wiil be joined by the youth choir for these same anthems at 11 a.m. The Methodist Men will have as their guest speaker for their monthly dinner meet ing Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Truman Collins, an active Methodist layman who was recently selected as Portland's First Citizen. He will also show slides of his recent trip to Pakistan, where he inspect ed Methodist missions. The Senior High Methodist Youth Fellowship will have a fireside at the church Sunday evening with Frank Williams and Elaine Davenport in charge. Twelve of the senior high group will attend the Methodist Youth Conclave at Willamette university, Satur day, April 20. Eagle Point Church Choir Plans Cantata Eagle Point - The church choir of the Eagle Point Com munity Bible church will pre sent an Easter Cantata Sun day. There will be two morning services-at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Sunday school will be at 9:45 a.m. Some of the fea tures will be "The Holy City," "The Hallelujah Chorus," and several solos and duets. The Easter message will be given by the pastor, the Rev. Warren L. Christensen. The church is located on South B st.. Eagle Point. Ascension Lutheran Schedules Services Ascension Lutheran church, 2617 Barnett rd., will hold two worship services Sunday at 7:30 and 11 a.m. Following the early service a social hour will be held with refreshments served. The first year catechetical class will resume their in struction Saturday, April at 9:30 a.m. Berean Baptists Announce Activities White City - An Easter program on the theme, "Res urrection, will be given Sunday at 9:45 a.m. by the Sunday school departments at Berean Baptist church. An Easter offering is to be received dur ing this service to purchase tile for the church chapel. "The Peace Easter Brought'' is the subject selected for the 7:30 p.m. service. Hymn-sing, testimonies, missionary mo ments, and other music arc included in the one-hour service. 'Christianity' Is Easter Sermon "Christianity a Matter of Death and Life" is the subject of the Easter Sunday sermon to be preached by the Rev. Robert W. Tull, minister of the Congregational church, at the church's service at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The service will be held in the auditorium of Hoover Grade school on Siskiyou blvd., which is the temporary meeting place of the church while plans are being made for the construction of a new sanctuary and educational unit at the corner of East Jackson st. and Berkeley way As a part of the Easter Sun day service, the children of the church school will attend the opening portion of the service in class groups, going to their classes after the choir sings the Easter anthem, "As It Began to Dawn." Supervised child care will be offered in the school health room for children younger than three years of age throughout the entire service. The three, four and five year old children will hold their class in the school band room at 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Laymen's fellowship will meet for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. at ihe Town House cafe. All the men of the church and their friends are invited to begin the day in discussion and prayer at breakfast. The choir will re hearse on Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the home of the Rich- ardsons, 749 West 14th st. The solemn observance of the Friday of the passion and death of the Lord will begin at 7:30 o'clock tonight in Sacred Heart church with the reading of several lessons from the Old Testament and St. John's account of the pas sion of Christ. The remainder of the of ficial Roman Catholic services for today will consist of three parts: the recitation of the solemn prayers for the needs of the church and all man kind; the unveiling and ador ation of the cross which has been covered since Passion Sunday; and the distribution of holy communion which was consecrated on Holy Thurs day and reserved in the tab ernacle of the altar of repose until this time. "The Easter Triumph", an Easter choir cantata by Carrie B. Adams, will be presented at 7:30 p.m. by the adult choir under the direction of Mrs. Claude Lewis, assisted by the youth choir directed by Miss Kay Johnson. Apostolic Faith Plans Cantata John W. Peterson's cantata, "No Greater Love," will be presented again this year by popular request as the high light of Easter services at tne Apostolic Faith church, ac cording to the Rev. Loyce C. Carver, pastor. The Sunday school will open at 9:30 a.m. with the seven children of the Robert Brown family reciting Scrip ture versus bearing upon the death and resurrection of Christ. A beginners' chorus will sing 'Jesus Is Risen." A boys' quartet, composed of Danny Schleigh, D o n n i e Walden Douglas Overstreet, and Dar rell Teel, from the primary department will sing 'Won derful Easter Story." The de partment will join to sing "This Is Happy Easter, and "Sing Hosanna." A trumpet duet, played by Ronald Frie sen and Stephen Jones, will introduce the junior depart ments singing of It Is the Lord Who Died for Me." The presentation of the cantata will be held at the 1 1 a.m. worship hour. It will be sung by the 60-voice mixed chorus, accompanied by Mrs. Robert James at the piano and Mrs. George Sprague at the organ. Soloists will be Mrs. Clifford Friesen, Mrs. Bessie Burchfield, Larry Schleigh, Warren Hanlin, and Duane Jones. The Scripture narrations will be read by Mr. Carver, and Bill Walden will direct the chorus.. The 8 p.m. service will be opened by the 40-piece or chestra playing "Adagio Path etique," and the chorus sing ing "The Lord Is Coming Back Again." Mr. Carver will give the evening message.
