Cassius Clay Will Take On Henry Cooper Louisville, Ky. - IUPH - If Cassius Clay had his way, his next fight would be with former heavyweight cham pion Floyd Patterson. But since Clay couldn't get together on terms with Pat terson, he will meet British Empire champion Henry Cooper in a 10-roundcr at London's Wembley Stadium, probably June 18. Cocky Cassius is lo receive $30,000 or 27Vi per cent of the gate, whichever is greater. for the bout with the sturdy Englishman, who Is ranked No. 0 among heavyweight contenders by the World Box ing association. Clay, who is ranked second behind Patterson for a shot at Sonny Llston's crown, was willing to box Patterson for 30 per cent of the gate in New York's Madison Square Garden. The offer came from New York matchmaker Ted. dy Brenner. Floyd rebelled at the idea of the 21-year-old Louisville Lip getting any more than 20 per cent. So thats where things stood - a complete atandoff - when Clay's man ager, Bill Faversham, agreed to the Cooper bout Wednesday. Baa aaar! L"'' m I'l Ll m - . mm Rogue Valley Schools Enter Hayward Relay Events Friday Five high schools of the Rogue valley area will have participants In Eugene on Fri day for the first day's activi ties of the University of Ore gon's annual Hayward relays. Rogue River, St. Mary'i and Illinois Valley will contend in Class C and Phoenix and Eagle Point In Class B. St. Mary's will aim for its fifth straight mantle. But, a strong titular bid from Rogue River,' third last year, is an ticipated. The Chiefs signaled this by ending the reign of St. Mary's last Saturday in the Little Rogue relays at Phoe nix. Coach Frank Morris of the Chieftains said that he will take an 18-man squad to Eu gene. The team will be almost the same as the one which took the Little Rogue toga. An exception will place Jim Fab- rick in the 440-yard relay. He will fill the spot held down by Don Salyer. For, Salyer will move into the open high hurdle race. Salyer Vies Salyer will set his sights on the pole vault and high jump honors and run a leg of the ahuttle hurdles in addition to vying in the high barriers. Morris described the run ning of Fabrick, Ron Waite and Dave Lee as pleasant sur prises last week. In the same category was the 133 discus throw of freshman Marl Car ter, although he scratched. Also, making Rogue River loom strong is the fact that BOWLING STANFORD RUNNER Bob Mclntyrc, ex-Oregon State A - 1 440-yard run, champ from Mcdford high, is a var sity track performer for Stan ford University this season aa a sophomore. He will contend for the Indians in Stanford stadium this Saturday against the University of Oregon. Mc lntyrc Is slated to run in the 220 and 440 dashes and the 440 relay.
