Bob Bragan Thinks Milwaukie Can Fool (This is the Ulh of 20 dis patches on the 1963 prospects of the 1963 major league base ball teams.) By LEO H. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor West Palm Beach, Fla.-UJPIl-The Braves have a new man ager in scrappy Bobby Bra gan and new owners in a group of Wisconsin industrial ists, but little in the way of new ball players. Yet Bragan, never one to despair although he lost his two former major league managing jobs in front office reorganizations, and the new president, Johnny McHale, are hopeful, if not optimistic. "We can fool a lot of peo ple." Bragan predicts. And he points to his potential pitch ing staff proudly. Trouble is he has only one established major league out fielder. "We'll correct that," he promises. Just how, he doesn't reveal, although they did ob tain Ty Cline from Cleveland last week to complete the deal whereby slugging first base man Joe Adcock went to the Cleveland Indians. The Braves finished fifth last year, 15' & games out. "I'll promise one thing -we'll be closer this coming year," Bragan says. If they are, a lot of things will have to jell where there doesn't seem too much jelling potential - like that outfield. But they do have such stars as Hank Aaron. Eddie Math ews, Del Crandall, Warren Spahn and Lew Burdettc. Give them some support and there could be trouble aplenty. Aaron, always a good bet lo win the batting triple crown, is the one outfielder Bragan has. And Bragan says he will play exclusively in right field this year, and not alternate between right and center. "And it should help his bat ting." Not that his batting needs any help, but Aaron is not happy playing center. He hit .323 last year with 45 home Whelan Paces Classic Singles Buffalo, N.Y. - DM - Big "E" of Buffalo, N, Y. climbed to 10th place in the classic team division of the Ameri can Bowling Congress tourna ment Sunday night. Led by Sam Borrasca's 6(i3, the Buffalo bowlers add ed 3002 to the 2961 series rolled Saturday and wound up with 5963. Still leading the division is United Van Lines of St. Louis with 6210. In minor events Sunday, Don Whelan of Buffalo who has been bowling seriously only four years, took first in the classic singles with 730. He replaced Ed Thomas of Logan, Ohio, who dropped to second with 720. Whelan also took second in the classic all-events with 1979 for nine games. Still leading is Thcrman Gibson of Detroit with 1991. John Fonagy Jr.. who roll ed with Whelan on the bij "E" team, placed fifth in the classic singles with 697. Standings in the regular team division remained un changed Sunday. There doesn't appear to be much in ! the way of rookie help so ; those six men will have to do the job. The betting is they i can't do it. Mathews, of course, is a fixture at third. Although he had an off year in 1962 he ! still rapped out 29 home runs j and knocked 90 across the plate. It will be Frank Boll- i tng at second and probably the aging Roy McMillan at short. With Adcock gone, first is a question mark. Although when the Braves let Big Joe go they thought Tommie Aaron, younger brother of Hank, could fill the job. But Tommie hit only .231 last season so Norm Larker, ob tained from Houston, and Len Gabrielson, who came up from Toronto as an outfielder. 1 arc being given a shot at the job. Crandall Behind Plate Crandall. although 33, figures to be the first string catcher with two Bobs. Ucck er and Taylor, in reserve. Now as to that pitching Bragan is so optimistic about. Spahn, now 41, won 18 last year the first season in the last seven lie did not garner 20 victories or more. Bur dettc, 36, won 10 games after being used sparingly during the first half of the season. Holdovers Bob Shaw (15-9), Bob Hendley 1 11-13) and Tony Cloninger (8-3) also figure in the starting rotation. The Braves hoped they have solved their bullpen problem with Frank Funk. acquired from the Cleveland Indians where he had a 2-1 record in 1962. Bragan also has Claude Raymond (5-5), Denny Le Master (3-4), Ron Piche (3-2), and Cecil Butler (2-0). Then it comes down to kids, who may need more season ing. But pitching, with Hank Aaron, Mathews and Cran dall, figure to be the strong points of the Braves. Unless Bragan can solve his outfield problems, however, the out look is not too promising.
