MARCH 23. 1963 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON Medford Entertains Grater Host to Grants Pass In Saturday Baseball Tussles Southern Oregon confer ence baseball campaign openi this Saturday weather per. mitting w i t h a . pair of doubleheaders while the de fending champion has a non- league twinbill at home. Conference clashes have Grants Pass against Crater at Central Point and Ashland at Klamath Falls. First games are set for 1:30 p.m. Medford, which won the 1962 mantle, entertains Rose burg. "Play ball" time also is 1:30 p.m. Grants Pass had tussles slated at Roseburg this after noon but field conditions may have forced postponement, Klamath Falls was to meet Yreka, Calif. The conference this season abandons the previous league plan of eight counting games. Sixteen-game schedules are to determine the loop titlist. Each team plays each other for one four loop frays as in basketball. Second Games Count ' In past seasons the schools have met in doubleheaders with second games non-count ing five-frame affairs. - This year the second games will be included in the standings and will be for seven Innings. The Black Tornado of Med ford has a good nucleus of veterans back from the 1932 club which compiled an offi cial conference standing of 7-1. It will bear the favored role when it begins league action, despite yesterday's 13 to 1 practice loss to Ash land A tight race, neverthe less, has been anticipated. Grants Pass looks tougher than it did last year when It was the cellar club with a 1-7 mark. Crater has a substantial crew with experience and fine talent and is expected to make and strong and spirited bid for the District 6 A-l ban ner. Ashland will challenge if some of its young and in experienced players rise to the task. The Comets of Cra ter were 2-6 for league games last year and Ashland 4-4. First Indication This week end's contention will provide the first real in dication of how the Southern Oregon conference clubs match up. Bad weather has restricted the activity of the earns. Medford's squad worked Wednesday In one of the show buildings of the Jackson county fairgrounds. At Grants Pass, the Cave men through yesterday had only one day of practice this wee k Monday because of the rain which has thorough ly soaked their field. On the conference race Grants Pass Coach Ron Mau rer ranks Medford the favo rite on its experience and pitching talent. But, of his own team he says, "We could take it all if our pitching and hitting come through." Maurer rates the Grants Pass-Crater rivalry a tossup. For the Comet tangles Mau rer anticipates starting Jerry McCormack and Jim Thomp son, lettermen, on the hill, with Steve Newman, a sopho more who's looking good, for relief. Other lettermen starters are Bob Peters, catcher; Bill Standley, second base; Lyman Keisecker. third base; Rich ard Wolny, shortstop, and Gary Reddick, center field. At first may be Don Summers with McCormack handling the duties when not pitching, It's between senior non-let- termen Bill Arnold and Bob Newton in left field. Arnold or Tom Blanchard, No. 2 catcher, could be in right field. If Grants Pass and Rose burg are able to play today. Steve Warf, a freshman, and Pat Duchien and Ted Hum mell, sophomores, likely will see hill service. Crater Lineup Larry Pepper and Wayne Clay are the probable Crater starting pitchers with Larry Mason and John Bush avail able for relief. Others in the lineup could be Darryl Sum merfield, catcher; Howard Tomlinson, first base; Pat Pepper, second base; Mike Glines, third base; Lou Alva rez, shortstop; Don Kilbourne, left field; Neil Rivenburg, center field, and Willie Jones, right field. Coach Bill Piche said that Dave Twedell may see some left field service. Three Medford lettermen from last year who did not take part in the game at Ash land yesterday may be in the opening llnel for the Torna do tomorrow against Rose burg. These are Dick Deftley, second base; Dan Miles, short stop, and Mike Neathamer, center field. They turned out at the start of the week after completing basketball play. Other Players Other possible starters are Ken Phipps or Wayne Couch, catcher; Don Anderson, first base; Ron Edmonds, third base, and among Gary Miller, Couch, Tom Barker and Mike Barnes, outfielders. Barnes is among the basketball players who just reported. Barker was ill and did not make the Jaunt to Ashland. Pitching for the Tornado may be divided among Stuart Young, Larry Sander, Bill Enyart and John Gates. Jack Forde, also among those just out after basketball action, is not ready for pitching serv ice. Coach John Kovenz hopes he'll be able to throw some next Tuesday In another non league fray with Ashland. Coach Bill Leybold of Ashland has indicated that he will select his twirlers for the Klamath games from among Bill Tilford, John Rhodes and Dave Barger. Clyde Nelson, Jan Susee and Gene Slade, outfielders. Klamath Falls, which split wltn wed, Calif., last week, has eight lettermen. Jim and Rich Jackson and Gary Ben son are pitching veterans. Other lettermen are Larry Blnney, first base; Lanny Guyer, second base; Mike Kitching, shortstop; Joe Pari sotto, third base, and Larry Smith, outfielder. Since Binney has been ill. John Gray may have the first base assignment against Ash land. Catcher likely will be Dave Johnson with Tom Osa and Rick Horn slated to round out the outfield. Far West Relay Meet Saturday Eugene - IUPD The sixth running of the Far West re lays is scheduled for Havwarrt Field Saturday, but the way the Oregon and Oregon State track teams are going, there may not be enough athletes left to run the meet. Defending national collegi ate champion Oregon is fa vored to win the team title, as it has every year since the meet Began. However, Coach Bill Bow- erman's already - dwindling forces got another shock Thursday when distance man Mike Lehner was ordered to the sidelines for at least two weeks because of mononucle osis. Lehner, who finished third in the NCAA , steeple chase last summer, may be lost for the season. Shot put and discus star Dave Steen has a sore elbow, distance man Ted Abram Is sidelined with a heavy cold, and quarter-mile hopeful Bob Bruce has dropped out of school. Pole vaulter Gerry Moro and Javelin thrower John Burns also are nursing minor aliments. Tom Boswell of Oregon State, favored in the 100, is out of action with a pulled muscle. Sprinter Lynn Eves and quarter-miler Lee Hazen also have muscle woes. Washington State sprinter Jim Easley is through for the season because of muscle problems and defending pole vault champion John Cramer of Washington is a doubtful participant Saturday for the same reason. The meet is scheduled to start at 1 p.m., with the first running event at 2. Kart Races On Sunday Trophy races are scheduled for Sunday, March 31, at Med ford kartways, weather per mitting. Gates open at 11 a.m. Time trials are planned for 1 p.m. Trophies will be awarded in each class. Spectators are Invited. Cof fee and chocolate will be available. Angels Perfect Baseball Show Palm Springs, Calif.- IUPD The Los Angeles Angels not only have Just about finished preparations for the 1963 sea son, but apparently have per fected their road show ver sion of their stylized ninth inning drama. In 1962, the Angels never really gave the fans a chance to breathe easy it was always down to the wire, win or lose. The 1963 edition of the im pressive Angel ballclub Is no different. Thursday, the Ser aphs came from behind for three runs in the ninth to beat Cleveland 4-3 for their third win in a row scored In the final frame. CAST REMOVED St. Petersburg, Fla. IUPD - Chris Cannizzaro, a catcher for the New York Mets who suffered a fractured right finger In the opening week of spring training, had the cast removed Wednesday. Canniz zaro won't be able to resume catching for another two or three weeks. MEDFORDSWriUBUNE SIPdDMTTS Grizzlies Down Tornado 13-1 in Practice Scrap Ashland high's Grizzlies, rated as underdogs in the Southern Oregon conference chase, downed Medford 13 to 1 yesterday in a practice base ball game. The Bruins did all their scoring in the third inning. Medford got its lone run in the first, Originally, the game was billed for Tuesday. Because of rain, it was moved to Wednesday. Weather again on Wednesday resulted in post ponement. It was decided to work the game into the sched ule later in the season. Then, Pro Golfers Come Here On Monday Some 30 pros, members of the Oregon division of the Professional Golfers associa tion, and a field of possibly ISO players Is anticipated at Rogue Valley Country club Monday and Tuesday, April 1 and 2, when the division's an nual spring pro-amateur tour ney is scheduled. The golfers come here aft er Sunday rivalry at Rose burg. Each of the pros is bringing two amateurs with him and two for each will be provided by the local club. All spots are filed for Monday play here and there is a waiting list of alternates. However, as of, yesterday there were three amateur openings for Tues day. Golfers interested In fill ing them are asked to call RVCC pro Ron Caperna. Top Amateurs Some of the .better ama teurs In the state will accom pany the pros and most of the local low handlcappers will take part. Among the pros slated -to vie are Bunny Mason, Colum- bla-Edgewater, Portland; Bob McKendrick, Oswego; Mar low Quick, Astoria; Boots Porterf ield, Grants Pass; Jerry Mowlds, Riverside of Portland; and Bob Ellsworth, Meriwether of Portland, and Harold west, Tualatin. Vancouver, Seattle Bid For Crown United Press International The Seattle Tntema ind Vancouver Canucks, neck and neck in the Western Hockev league with three days to go, resume their bid for the Northern division chamninn- ship tonight. Both teams have 7' points as they head for the wire. The Totems play host to Cal gary tonight while Vancouver entertains Portland. The race will probably go down to the final day, when Vancouver crosses the border to meet Seattle Sunday. The only WHL action Thursday night saw the San Francisco Seals bang Spokane 7-3 in a eame that meant nothing as far as the final standings are concerned. The seals nave clinched second in the Southern division and Spokano has no rival for fourth. San Francisco's Len Halev scored the 399th and 400th points of his lea cue career as the Seals ripped off to a B-u lead in tne first two per iods. Danny Belisle also hit the Spokane net twice. The Seals are at Los An. geles tonight to round out a tnree-game schedule includ ing the Calgary-Seattle and Vancouver-Portland tilts. They include Mike Gard ner, Les Dewey, Cliff Pink ham, Robert Bruce, Jerry Calhoon, Rick Mayes, Mike Turner and Greg Applen. Gardner, Dewey, Pinkham and Bruce appear pretty well set for regular duty but it is n scramble fo rthe No. 5 posi-j tion. Santa Clara Leads Way In Nat Test Cleveland - IUPD - Record breaking performances were expected to continue today as the spotlight turned to indi vidual events in the Nation al AATJ women's indoor swim ming and diving champion ships. The Santa Clara Swim club showed the way as the meet began Thursday night with team competition. The club's "A" team shattered Ameri can and National AAU rec ords in the 400-yard free style relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Olympic star Donna De Va rona sparkled in both events as Santa Clara clipped a to tal of nearly 13 seconds off the former records. The 15-year-old swimmer insured vic tory in the freestyle event by blazing her 100-yard anchor leg in 53.2. The team time was 3:43.9, almost six full sec onds under the old mark. Cleveland Second The Cleveland Swim club, which set the former record of 3:49.8 last fall, was second, and the Northern Virginia Aquatic club was third. Both teams also broke the existing American and AAU marks. The young Californians completed the medley event in 4:09.5. clipping almost sev en seconds off the former mark of 4:16.2. Miss DeVa rona, leading off instead of finishing up, put her team in front to stay by flashing the backstroke leg in 1:02.1, a new American record. Shccduled for today and to night were preliminaries and finals in the 100-yard free style, 200-yard backstroke, 250-yard breaststroke and 400- yard individual medley.
