Flue Fire - Ashland fire men extinguished a flue fire at the home of Mrs. Guy Ap plewhite, 112 Nobhill St. Thursday. The call came in at 10:35 P-m. There was no damage. Attic Scorched - Interior of an attic at Andy Ander son residence on South Stage rd, (route 1, box 328K) was scorched from a roof fire this morning. Medford firemen said the blaze was outside the Medford rural fire protection district but that the pumper truck was placed on standby while firemen assisted the owner in removing burning material around the flue. Flue Fire - A flue fire at the home of Frank Cavin, 925 Lawnsdale rd., about 9:05 p.m. yesterday was reported by city firemen. Fire in Wall - Medford firemen received two calls at the same time last night. One of the summons about 11:25 p.m. was to the residence of Robert Sullenger, 190 South Stage rd., where there was a fire in the exterior wall around the fireplace. A three- by-four-foot section of wall sheeting was removed. Fire men reported possible smoke damage to one room. The oth er call was request of a neigh boring resident to put out a trash fire in a metal contain er at a construction site on North Riverside ave. near Liberty st. Permits Issued - A build ing permit Issued by the Med ford building department re garding the property at 425 Union ave. was to erect a car port and garage and' not for demolishing house by Safe way Stores. The item was in correctly listed in Thursday's Mail Tribune. Other permits issued were to Sierra Con struction for a $15,000 resi dence at 2100 Oakwood ave, and to Federal Sign and Sig nal to erect a sign for the Big Y Market at North Pacific highway and Table Rock rd valued at $19,221v Heads Poppy Drive - Com mander Frank L. Otley of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1833 has announced the appointment of Louis Kula as chairman of the VFW annual Buddy Poppy drive, which will be held May 24 and 25. VFW auxiliary members ex pect to distribute millions of Buddy Poppies on the streets of American cities during the 1963 sales, Otley said. Faulkner Dies in Tennessee Oxford, Miss. -(UPD- Author John W. T. Faulkner III, 61, whose i literary fame was eclipsed by his famous broth er William Faulkner, died in Memphis, T e n n., hospital Thursday. Faulkner died from what his physician said probably was a stroke following an op eration for an inflamed pan creas. Services were planned to day in the century and a half old Faulkner Mansion located Just off the University of Mis. sissippi campus, where both Faulkners once attended classes. Friends said Faulkner, who began his writing career more than 20 years after his broth er, had given 3-2 odds he would return from the hos pital. Both brothers used this small college town and its people for many of their stories and novels. Representative to Speak at Banquet Grants Pass-Rep. Clarence Barton (D-Coquille) speaker of the Oregon House of Rep resentatives, will be the prin cipal speaker at the Grants Pass and Josephine County Chamber of Commerce's an nual banquet here Saturday night. He will speak on "The His tory of Oregon, Its Growth and Potential Future." The banquet will be held at 8 p.m. in the Josephine county fair grounds pavilion.
