What It Income? In preparing your tax re turn the first item you must determine is your gross in come. Unless you are engaged Jn a business or have income from property this figure will normally be made of cash re ceived from your employer. However, some cash receipts are excluded and you may have income even though you receive no cash. Normally the fair market value of things, you receive as compensation must be included in income. If your employer provides you with a house in which to live its rental value is income to you. So too if he pay? for your meals. The only excep tion to this rule about meals and lodging is that if they are furnished to you on your em ployer's premises for his con venience they are not income. For example, if it is essential to your employer that you Be on his property 24 hours a day and he furnished you a house on the property its ren tal value is not income to you. If, on the other hand, he pays your rent as an induce ment to get you to move to u new location, the rent he pays is income to you. Although usually the fair market value is the amount to be included in income as the result of the receipt of property from your employer, if you have agreed to work for a specified amount and he pays you with property rather than cash, the amount you have agreed upon will normally be the amount to in clude in income. Not Income . ,. Some cash payments by an employer are not- included in income. Premiums paid by the employer for group life insurance, group health insur ance, are not income. Pay ments made by the employer for moving expenses when he requires an employee to move to a new location are not in come to the employee. Gifts are not income unless they are in the nature of a bonus.
