THURSDAY. MARCH 28, 1963 8 B The Family Council 1 Editor'! note: The FsrollV council eoniltU of Judre, a fthychUtrlst, tare clergymen, three editors and a women's editor. Each article li a luminary ot a family disagreement presented to the Council. The Council deals with problems, major and minor, encountered by guidance counselors and social workers, edited by Mrs. Alma Denny. (Copyright by Geaeral Features Corp.) MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON ' Mr. B. J. - She wants me to give up my pet. Mrs. N. F. - I don't want to have to drown baby kittens. -.'. ;e , Mr. B. J. - I'm a man of 73, living on welfare funds and boarding with Mrs. F. She's been very kind about my pets, a parakeet and a kit ten. But now the kitten is a full-grown female cat and Mrs. F. wants me to let her go or have her destroyed. I know the reason, of course. The tom-cats gather around our Dorch and send up a ter rible howl. Mrs. F. just doesn't want the problem of kittens from Brindle. All I can promise is to try and watch her. I can't afford to have her spayed by a vet erinarian. And I do so want to keep her. Mrs. N. F. - I have nothing against Mr. J. as a boarder. He's quiet, clean, and pleas ant. But I haven't even let my own children keep a fe male net, ever since I had to go through the horrible ex perience of drowning four baby kittens born to a stray cat who bedded down in our basement. We keep two male dogs and even they come home at cer tain times all scarred from the fights they get into with other dogs. I don't want any heartbreak that can be avoid ed. But Brindle is only year-and-a-half old. He should part with her now. before he gets more attached, and get a male kitten. The Council: We might as well tee off with a text from the joke page of "Modern Ma turity," a magazine for senior citizens. "It's nice for chil dren to have pets," is the quote, "until the pets have Note to persons planning summer cruises: Tourists sud denly exposed to tropical climates often exhibit salt de ficiency symptoms: fatigue, headache, giddiness, nausea, muscle cramps. Go easy on the sun and heavy on the salt shaker the first few days. HELP! children." . But Mrs. F. isn't joking. And we won't either. We join her in aiming to avoid suffer ing, whether it's Mr. J.'s or her own or Brindle's or Brin dle's unwanted kittens. The answer of course is to have Brindle spayed. It came as a bit of a surprise to learn that the A.S.P.C.A. docs not provide this surgical service free of charge to pet owners who cannot a (ford to pay the fees scheduled by the Veteri nary Medical Assn. One would assume that some of the bequest money left to this humane agency by pet-lovers would be earmarked to help the needy enjoy their female cats and dogs, as do the sol vent, without worrying about what to do with recurrent and unwelcome litters. Instead, ac cording to our information, unspayed pets are released for adoption from the A.S.P.C.A shelters. We learn, however, of a private organization with headquarters in New York which can help Mr. J. It's called Friends of Animals Inc., at P.O. Box 285, New York 24, N.Y. Its goal is to reduce the number of young cats and dogs - now estimated at 20 million a year - who face abandonment, starvation and destruction. This group points out that the spaying of just one pet means that dur ing its lifetime, from 80 to 280 young animRls will be spared a miserable existence in a world that has no place for them. . By special arrangements with cooperating veterinari ans. Friends of Animals can send Mr. J.'s Brindle to one who will charge no more than he can pay. (The materials used, it has been ascertained, cost only $1.20.) , ' Advantages Seen In Kindergarten For Some Children By DAVID HYDICK UPI Education Specialist Many parents are consider ing whether their children would benefit from admission to kindergarten before normal age. Such admission is possi ble because some school sys tems have flexible- age re quirements. Is this practice advanta geous? Perhaps some children will Cheney Elected to Executive Group Francis I. Reserved Prices Good Thru Sunday benefit-, if acceptance is based on a thorough evaluation of the child in Relation to the particular school. A child's academic ability is the first area of growth which should be considered. If your child docs not have a relative ly high intellectual ability, you should drop the whole idea of early admission. This can be measured by a quali fied psychologist using an in dividual I.Q. (intelligence quo tient) test. Probably a mini mum score of 125 should be required. Superior perform ance on a reading readiness test is an additional indica tion. The child's activities at home should be observed. Does he show an interest in learning to read? Maybe he already is reading simple sto ries. Has he developed any of the simple arithmetic skills? Physical growth and coordi nation are factors. If a child is small, this will be emphasized by moving him ahead. His mo tor skills should be carefully checked. Does he know left from right? Can he tie his shoelaces or button his shirt? A good indication is his abil ity to hold and manipulate a spoon or fork while eating. The child's social and emo tional level are important. He should be ready for separation from his mother. This may be judged by his reaction to baby sitters. Is your child ready to become a member of a group? His ability to work with other children is a major part of kindergarten. You may be fa miliar with the term "atten tion span." In a school situa tion, students are often requir ed to spend a reasonable length of time at one activity. Look' at Effects The entire question of un der age admission to school may be clearer if you look at some of the long range effects. When going on dates becomes important, a teenager who is younger than his clasmates has many difficulties. This Is especially true if his interest in dating has not developed. The individual whose muscles and coordination are underdeveloped will natural ly be at a disadvantage in the area of athletics. A student's academic place ment in his class is a major concern. Will the child who is moved ahead still be an out standing student? The impor tance of this is emphasized by the competitive nature of our society. The top students tend to get into the best colleges and are chosen for the best jobs. Early admission to school may be beneficial in certain cases. Professional assistance should be sought in consider ing all aspects of the child's growth before making the decision.
