According to the book, I "Doctors Philatelic," by Os-I car Gottfried, the first Presi-! dent performed many medi- cal acts. I "As the master of a large j plantation, somewhat isolat-: ed," Gottfried says, "he wasj like a captain on a ship who must administer to his peo-: pie." j "Washington once adminis tered an infusion of scarlet; pimpernel to prevent hydro phobia," Gottfried said. "Cary and Company of London, England, sent him regularly such drugs as ipec acuanha jalap, diacordium, rhubarb and Venice treacle. He had in his library a num ber of books on medicine and surgery." Washington was a contem porary of Benjamin Rush, one of the nation's earliest and greatest physicians. The gen eral is said to have been in . strumental in encouraging au thorities to inoculate the American Army against smallpox. Grants Pass Man Heads Study Group Portland - IOT - Jackson Beaman, president of South ern Oregon Plywood, Inc., Grants Pass, has been elected chairman of the Western Wood Products Study commit tee. John Aram, vice president of Weyerhaeuser Co., was chosen vice chairman and Ar thur Morgans of Uhe W11-. lamette Valley Lumber Co. was named secretary - treas urer. The election came at the committee's first meeting. It was formed by representa tives of the Western Pine As sociation, West Coast Lumber men's Association and Doug las Fir Plywood Association to evaluate coordination or merging of activities financed by the' lumber and plywood industries and carried out by the three forest products trade association. Johnson Said Not Seeking Nomination New York - OIPD - Vice Prpsiripnt Lyndon B Johnson says he does not plan to seek the Demo cratic presidential nomination in 1964. Johnson also said he "doubt ed the advisability" of friends who put him in the race dur ing the 1960 party convention. "I didn't feel I was a candi date; I didn't get Into any of the primaries; I didn't go out and ask any delegations to commit themselves to me in 1960," the vice president said. Johnson said that as far as the 1964 convention is con cerned, "I would certainly hope that the delegates who are selected would look with approval upon the work that the President has done, and that I have attempted to do."
