First President
Doctor on Side i
New York-OJPU-Although he
was not a licensed physician,!
there is evidence that George !
Washington practiced medi-
cine.
According to the book, I
"Doctors Philatelic," by Os-I
car Gottfried, the first Presi-!
dent performed many medi-
cal acts. I
"As the master of a large j
plantation, somewhat isolat-:
ed," Gottfried says, "he wasj
like a captain on a ship who
must administer to his peo-:
pie." j
"Washington once adminis
tered an infusion of scarlet;
pimpernel to prevent hydro
phobia," Gottfried said.
"Cary and Company of
London, England, sent him
regularly such drugs as ipec
acuanha jalap, diacordium,
rhubarb and Venice treacle.
He had in his library a num
ber of books on medicine and
surgery."
Washington was a contem
porary of Benjamin Rush, one
of the nation's earliest and
greatest physicians. The gen
eral is said to have been in
. strumental in encouraging au
thorities to inoculate the
American Army against smallpox.

Johnson Said Not
Seeking Nomination
New York - OIPD - Vice
Prpsiripnt Lyndon B Johnson
says he does not plan to seek
the Demo cratic presidential
nomination in 1964.
Johnson also said he "doubt
ed the advisability" of friends
who put him in the race dur
ing the 1960 party convention.
"I didn't feel I was a candi
date; I didn't get Into any of
the primaries; I didn't go out
and ask any delegations to
commit themselves to me in
1960," the vice president said.
Johnson said that as far as
the 1964 convention is con
cerned, "I would certainly
hope that the delegates who
are selected would look with
approval upon the work that
the President has done, and
that I have attempted to do."
