WEDNESDAY. MARCH 7P. MEDFOHD MA'L VRIBUMb. MtlDFOBD, OREGON Slripes to Score As Major Fashion For Men's Shirts Stripes make major fashion news in men's shirts for spring and summer. Ranging from the big, broad, bold British stripes in deep shades of blue, gray, brown and red, the new shirts are also available in narrower stripes and pin stripes. '. ., ... i Next news note is the "look of more collar." A bit higher, a mite fuller in the cape, and a little wider in the spread, these styles have a dressier look without sacrificing sum mer comfort. Low Band Add the popular tabs, but ton-downs and moderate spread collar styles-plus the very low "vanishing band styles-and your fashion range is complete. Any and all of those styles are made in short as well as long sleeves to meet the de mands of all men for warm weather comfort. Sport shirts come up In an even wider array of fashion than usual this year. The "Nautical Look" so popular last year Is due for a return engagement with no diminish ing of Its popularity in sight. The salty motif shows up in knits as well as cut-and-sewn shirts, and the styling Is au thentic enough to suit the most ardent sailor. Broad British stripes score In sport shirts as well as in dress shirts. In addition to the other colors, they include rich bright stripes in signal-flag hues. The "Western" or "Ranch- wear" influence is evident in sport shirts keyed to those worn by the real cowhands. Pointed pocket flaps, yoked fronts and backs, fancy but tons and fancy cuffs distin guish the Westerns. For those who prefer sleek sophisticated styling, there are updated Continental collared shirts with Italian-type design cueing their tailoring. Traditionalists, of course, will have a wide selection of button-down models which will appear In all of the sea son's most popular patterns and solid colors. IN BLEND-For business or dressup wear, this hat comes in blend of rich brown with subtle blue cast. By Knox. Fashion Designers Take World Tour for New Ideas in Dress Designers of little girls' fashions roam the map of the world and come up with a world of Ideas for a beautiful young spring. Inspiration begins at home with the American frontier look, distinguished by an easy, outdoor feeling. These styles star natural shapes, slim and slightly fitted. Fab rics carry out the theme -denims and denim looks, homespun types, authentic madras and , madras looks, cord, seersucker, nubby-tex-tured wools, cottons and blends. Saddle stitching and sus pender effects contribute to the casual frontier look, as do hlpline belts and sashes. The Rajah Look India inspires the rajah look, another favorite for lit tle girls' styles. It appears in dresses and coats, closely seamed at the top, widening toward the hem, over all, easy and natural. Paris influences the little girls' world of fashion with the "pantskirt" dress, demi fitted and boasting a front pleat or panel. In coats, the now-classic A line and the "open air" look reflect Paris, too. Slim and easy, some "open air" coats have tun neled Norfolk belts, others show open V necklines, and most are designed in rugged, nubby fabrics - boucles, her ringbones, basketweaves. The "Ya-Ya" Dress London is the world-of-fashion source for the "ya-ya" dress, a fall and winter favor ite that shows up in spring fabrics, sporting a hemline flounce or ruffle. From London, too, comes the "guardsman" look in both coals and suits. They're trim ly tailored, with double breasted closings on wide front panels. In some of the coats, the panels button on and are removable to create still another look, the slim cardigan. Appearing as part of the American frontier look are wrap skirts, slim or full, wrapped to the back, front or side. The nautical look sails into the little girls' spring In many red, white and blue combinations, and in middy type over-blouses and sailor collared coats. Move Into Spring The Paris-inspired match box silhouette continues strongly into spring. Its slim lines, seen in dresses, coats and suits, make it very much in key with the over-all easy look of the season. The majority of suits for little girls follow classic lines. Newness enters in open air V necklines and open air fabrics, in longer, leaner jack ets and in fresh variations on the ever-popular Chanel look. Like their mothers, little girls this spring have a world of ensembles to choose from. The drcss-and-jackct returns, while the newer idea of the dress-and-coat is expected to compete strongly for fashion attention. FOR EVENING Spring's evening look high lights long skirts and the im portance of wool. Often, wool combines with airier fabrics such as chiffon, and contrasts solids with plaids or prints. From Mom's world, too, is an array of slim, skimmy shapes. This styling is seen in coats as well as dresses, sepa rates. Through fabrics are, for the most part, vigorously textur ed, there are surprises in store, in the form of eyelets and sheers used in smartly tailored styles. Little girls' fashions greet spring in colors that are clear and pale. Leading no-color is white, lighting up dresses, suits and coats. Pink and yel low vie for favor, and there are many whitened pastels. Gray and wheat make news as neutrals. CROWN INTEREST - Town and country styling with new crown interest is seen in this hat with creamy soft finish. By Dobbs. Linen Approved In Many Styles Rivaling the prcttiness of spring itself, is the lovely Irish linen being introduced. Long America s favorite fab ric for "round the clock," round the calendar, It's a fa vorite, too, of designers, all of whom featfire linens of all types in their collections. For spring, there are linens for every occasion .- all with a wonderful hand - crafted look, clean crisp texture and distinctive fashion - Tightness so typical of this wonderful fabric. Linen Seen Linen Is being shown in suit and dress weights, as well as gossamer sheer linen - till crease-resistant and adaptable to daytime and evening styles. Tweed - like linen weaves, "rich Jacquard and damask linens in rustics, floral, and delicate patterns lend exciting variety to the ever Interesting story of fashions in linen. Some of spring's newest linens feature a coarse hand and many upholstery - type dressmaker linens are in this group. There are now more linens blended with wool or silk in the spring fashion picture. Linens look especially won derful and exciting in the new whitened, bright pastels and high colors. Reversible Coats Another Revival Natural-shoulder devotees will gel their topcoat kicks from subtly colored shctlanda and cheviots, as well as from classic coverts. Most of these will be In the traditional, fly. front, slightly fitted chester field models. Starting in the natural s h o u 1 d e r field, but now branching out Into the other groups as well, is another re-vtval-the reversible topcoat. Made with a topcoat tweed on one side and reversing to a raincoat poplin on the other, the stylish turncoat is great for travel, campus and sports-wnir. JBF xuu ueeuu i De inwarieo. from entertaining on a grand scale this Easter, by the lack of an adequate-sized dining table. In the home or apartment where dining and living are combined in one area, the problem of how to entertain a large dining group can be acute. Modern ingenuity In furni ture design has the answer in tables that take up little space when not in use. Their ex pandable mechanism is no more complicated than the familiar card table or add-a-leaf dining table. Tables that hide inside of cabinets, masquerade as con soles, or fold Into about a foot of space are decorative and useful every day of the year. Early American, French Provincial, Modern or Tradi tional styles are available to match or contrast with other furnishings. Between parties these concealed tables take their place gracefully in en trance hall, living room, or as a server in the dining area. Cabinets or consoles which open into tables accomodating at least twelve chairs or an endless number of buffet guests make even small quar ters hospitably spacious. Kings Named Formal styles usually have ine name ot a king, queen or famous furniture designer such as Louis XV or Louis XVI or Queen Anne. Informal styles often are associated with a country: Early Ameri can, Danish Modern, French Provincial, Rural English, etc. Teakwoods, whites and golds, honey-gold walnuts, pecan and primavera woods, elegant mahoganies as well as traditional pines, cherries and maples are shown on all types of furniture this season. Tall Cabinets Tall cabinets, called "what nots" in great grandmother's day, are having a modern re vival in new forms. These are not just for the display of odds and ends and what have you, but to serve a functional purpose, attractively. Chairs matched in styling, often called "Mr. and Mrs." chairs are a wise investment for most homes. The man's chair is usually a little higher and wider than the woman's, but to balance the scale hers usually has a matching otto man. Sofa beds, sleep lounges and studio couches are tops on the nation's best-seller list. They are smartly styled, com fortable and are a perfect solution to space problems. . 1 Deep Colors Have Special Impact Amid spring's pale pastels and dazzling whites, deep colors have a special impact. Classic navy, lighter and brighter, becomes fashion news. Dark, autumnal browns make a spring appearance. Deep-hued dresses flash under pale coats, and dark blouses accompany light suits. DRAPED TURBAN - Frothy romantic hats are headlined for spring. Magnificently draped tulle turban evokes "mystique" of the Near East. By Vincent and Harmik. CREATING INTEREST Coat fabrics create surface interest for spring, with soft mohairs, fluffy wools, lacy tweeds, ottomans, whipcords, dressy ribbed silks adn silk worsted blends. Cheeks and plaids of every size abound. i.li. t .ii: i i r i ii k a - - - tame jening ai easier simple ll Rules ummed Up f Q How to set the table (or Easter feasting and other par ticular occasions is often a question that sends both new and seasoned hostesses scurry ing to etiquette books for the answer. According to the Jew elry Industry Council, the rules are simple and may be summed up briefly, Family dinner: At a family dinner, silver and china are on the table for the menu which usually includes soup, a main dish, salad and bread and butter. Dessert plates and spoons and forks come to the table later. Formal dinner: At a formal dinner, the service plate is the only china on the table at the ' beginning. All forks except the oyster fork go at the left of the plate, In the order in which they are to be used, from the outside in. Knives and spoons go at the right. Coffee Service Informal luncheon: The bread and butter plates are on the tiible, indicating that the meal is informal. The sil ver on the table includes a soup spoon, knife, fork and salad fork. The coffee service is on the serving table, and dessert plates and knives and forks will be brought to the table laler. Buffet service: The china and silver for the main course are conveniently laid out, for I 57 REMEMBER: It takes only four cards to spell C-A-S-H, and you have won $100.00.
