Promoter George Parnassus announced today that the the three bouts, including the welterweight title fight be tween champion Emile Grif fith and Luis Rodriguez, will be staged Thursday night at the Los Angeles Dodgers' sta dium. The other bouts on the card match featherweight cham pion Davey Moore against Su gar Ramos and Battling Tor res against Roberto Cruz. Moore is defending his title and Torres and Cruz are bat taling for the vacant junior welterweight title. Parnassus postponed the card Saturday night, mo ments before the Griffith Rodriguez bout, under pres sure from Gil Clancy, co-manager of Griffith, who argued, "This fight is too important for either boxer to take a chance on fighting in the rain." San Jose-OSU Track Meet Postponed United Press International San Jose State and Oregon State met today in a dual track and field meet which was postponed Saturday be cause of rain. Medford, District 6 A-1 -o-totitleists, will appear for the first time in a Tu -iday night opening game of the Big school titular tournament. Foes of the Black Tornado will be the Warriors of Le banon high. Game time is 7:30 p.m. This clash will be one of two on Tuesday night in Uni versity of Oregon's McArthur court. Six other first round games are billed for Wednes day. The 8:45 p.m. Tuesday tangle will match North Eu gene and Portland's Mirshall high. Winners of the opening night encounters will contend on Thursday in a 3 .m. quar terfinal. Losers will be rivals in an 8:30 a.m. Thursday con solation game. Squad Listed Slated to suit up for the opener for Medford are Rich Benner, Jim ill, Jack Forde, Larry Vowell, Dan Miles, Mike Neathamer, Gibh Mitch ell, Dick Deffley, Mike Barn es and Darryl Stockton. They have 45 minutes to themselves on the court. While Medford enters the tourney as a League co-champion, Lebanon goes as the No. 2 club from the Valley league (District 8). Each was a pre-tourney favorite to reach the tournament. How ever, the Tornadoes got there the hard way. With the league campaign half through, Mod ford was in fourth place three eames back of the loop leader. The locals then took their next eight straight conflicts to tie with the Grants Pass Cavemen for the diadem. They thereby carry a winning streak Into the A-1 extrava ganza. The big twister goes into the tourney after missing the Big Show last year. Medford last win the championship in 1960. In 1961 the Tornado was runner up to Klamath Falls in one, of the all-time great tournament finales. Last year, a Cinderella Grants Pass aggregation carried on Southern Oregon conference domination by winning the championship - third straight for this district. GP Versus South Salem Medford takes a 18-B sea ton record io Eugene. It was 1 1-5 for league play. Lebanon alio was 16 8 for the 1962 1963 slate. The Warriors were 14-4 in their league. Their April 10 Bout Chances Grow More Remote Chicago-dTD-The betting to day was not who would win, but whether the Sonny Liston- Floyd Patterson would come off as scheduled in Miami on April 10. Chances of the heavyweight title match meeting its Florida date grew Increasingly remote over the week end. Jack Nil on, the champion's advisor, said it would have to be post poned because of Liston's I knee injury. Liston, limping slightly and . obviously overweight, arriv-1 ed in Chicago Sunday for a 1 week's rest and a doctor's ex-1 amination of his left knee. Cavemen leave Tuesday morning for Eugene and will work out there in the early afternoon. Medford is contending in what is considered the tough upper bracket. North Eugene was rated No. 1 in the Ore gonian and Oregon Journal polls and Marshall third. Med ford was fourth in one poll and fifth the other and Pen dleton fifth in one and fourth in the other. OREOON SPORTS UO Duck Trackmen Defeat Cal Eugene - (UPD - Oregon's deefnding NCAA track cham pions are off and running The Ducks, with Canadian weightman Dave Steen smash ing two meet and school rec ords, opened its season with a 79-66 dual meet victory over California before 2,200 Sat urday. It was Oregon's 37th straight two-way meet win at home. Steen, a burly senior, won the shot put with 60 feet, 2Vj inches and captured the dis cus with 174 feet, 7 inches. Mel Renfro and Keith For- man also picked up double wins for Oregon. Renfro won the broad jump in 23 feet, i inch and the 120-yard high hurdles in IS seconds flat. Forman won the mile in 4:14.8 and the two-mile in 9:19.2. Meet Record California's Dave Archibald set a met record in winning the 440-yard dash in 48 sec onds flat and also won the 220. Terry Llewelyn of Oregon won the high jump against California's Bill Carter and defending NCA champion Roger Olsen. AH three went 6 feet, 6 inches but Llewellyn was awarded first place on a fewer number of misses. Car ter was second and Olsen fin ished third. The Ducks took firsts in 11 of the 17 events and swept the mile and two-mile events. Their other winners were Les Tipton in the javelin, Dave Blunt in the 100, Marty Frank in the pole vault and Archie San Romani Jr. In the 880. Art Pollard Race Victor Art Pollard, Medford, won the 25-lap main event Sun. day in Indianapolis sprint car competition in Portland. Pollard won a heat race and was second in the fast heat race. He drove the Ken's Mar- tinizing special. The Medford driver will contend next Sunday in mod. ified sportsman car races. They were Jack Forde, Medford; Mike Glines, Crater, and Jim Pippin, Grants Pass. First team choices were Nick Jones, Marshall; Bill Thomas, North Eugene; John P i n k s t a f f. South Eugene; Dave Romppanen, Astoria, and Gary Allen, South Salem. Counts Chosen Most Valuable Provo, Utah -IUPI) Tower ing Mel Counts, Oregon State's seven-foot center, was named the most valuable play er in the Far West (NCAA) basketball tournament which concluded Saturday night. Counts and teammate Terry Baker represented the cham pion Beavers on the all-tourney team selected i by sports writers and sportscaslers. Runnerup Arizona State university also placed two players on the honor team, Joe Caldwell and Art Becker, the fifth spot went to Ollie Johnson of the University of ban i ranclsco. Counts, junior from Coos Bay, Ore., was the tourney's high scorer with 48 points.
