10 A Minority Leader Answers Barton Salem-IUPIl-House Minority Leader F. F. Montgomery Thursday joined the running battle between the governor and legislative leaders. "The two-edged knife di rected at college professors and the state department of finance by House Speaker Clarence Barton smacks of McCarthyism and bears un forgivable inaccuracies for a man in his position," Mont gomery charged. Barton castigated the fi nance department in a verbal salvo Wednesday in answer to charges made by Gov. Mark Hatfield. "In castigating the depart ment of finance by saying it was made up of college pro fessors who never have met a payroll, the speaker casts a boulder at the profession of education In general," Mont gomery said. "It is all too typical of the know-it-all attitude of those who are out to get education in this session of the legislature." FRIDAY. 'Jehovah's Witnesses' Fastest Growing Religious Body in World By LOUIS CASSELS Unittd Pr.is International The fastest growing religi ous body in the world is a Brooklyn-based sect whose ad herents believe that dooms day is hard at hand. Its official name is the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. The members are bet ter known as "Jehovah's Wit nesses." During the past 20 years -a period in which the mem bership of other churches ap proximately d o u b I e d - the number of Jehovah's Wit nesses has increased by 700 per cent. Today there are about 900, 000 full-fledged Witnesses, and perhaps an additional one million fringe members who read the society's literature, attend its meetings, and gen erally sympathize with its doctrines. One-third of them live in the United States. There also are fast-growing branches of the society in West Germany, France, Latin America and Africa. Their phenomenal growth rate is the result of a zeal for evangelism which puts the established churches to shame. Every Witness is regarded as an ordained minister, and is sent out to ring doorbells, pass out literature on street corners and preach the so ciety's message to as many people as possible. Pac. rfwy. 99 - age Witness, working an as signed territory, makes per sonal calls on at least 10 homes each week. Behind this passion for convert-winning is the firm con viction of tne Witnesses that the end of human history is imminent. They expect it to come at any hour, and almost certainly within the next 10 years. The end will come, they say, with a titanic "Battle of Armageddon" between the forces of God and the forces of Satan. The awesome pyro technics of this struggle "will make atomic explosions look like firecrackers." The only survivors will be Jehova's Witnesses, who will there after live eternally and bliss fully, not in heaven, but right here on earth. Olh.r Religions Satanic Because they regard all other religious bodies as in struments of Satan, Witnesses feel that they can express their love of neighbor only by relentless proselyting by bringing as many people as possible into their own fold before it is too late. They also look upon all human governments as instru ments of Satan, and therefore refuse to pledge allegiance to any flag or to serve in any nation's armed forces. This stand has brought them into constant conflict with the law, and exposed them to many mob attacks, tar-and-feather-ings and other savage perse cutions, both in this country and elsewhere. But the Witnesses are not averse to using the judicial processes of government. Since 1938, they have car ried 50 test cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and have won 37 of them. Through this litigation, they have won the right to preach on the streets, refuse jury duty, avoid sa lutes to the flag, and carry on house - to house solicita tions. Leading constitutional law yers credit the cases brought by the Witnesses with achiev ing a major expansion of civil liberties for all Americans. But this was a purely inci dental by-product, so far as the Witnesses are concerned. They care nothing for improv ing social conditions or right ing injustices in human so ciety, which they feel is cor rupted beyond all hope of redemption and already doom ed to fiery destruction. Many Americans who have had brief encounters with Jehovah's Witnesses or their literature have formed the im pression that they are an off beat body of Protestants. But the Witnesses have a distinc tive theology of their own, which can hardly be described as a version of Christianity. In his excellent study of the Witnesses, "Armageddon Around the Corner", Prof. William J. Whalcn of Purdue university says Witnesses may be described as "fundamental ist Unitarians." "They regard the Bible as the infallible word of God, a word which must be taken literally and at face value," says Prof. Whalcn. "At the same time, they stoutly deny the divinity of Jesus Christ and the doctrine of the trinity. An orthodox Christian theo logian would recognize bits and pieces of a dozen ancient heresies in Witness theology." Education in America Youngsters' Difficulties Can Be Corrected by Adult Guidance By DAVID NYDICK UPI Education Specialist Parents have been made extremely aware of the need to seek psychological treat ment for children when need ed. Although many situations call for this, every problem is not a symptom of an emo tional disorder. Many difficulties can be corrected by guidance and good judgment. Temper can be controlled,. Consider the case of Fred, a third grader, who punched and kicked Larry, his class mate. This Incident grew from a simple shove. Fred lost his temper. He had a great deal of trouble controlling it. The teacher had to pull the boys apart. For the next few min utes Fred remained wild. He would not listen to reason. When he finally settled down, he was ashamed and sorry. Unfortunately, similar inci dents occurred more frequent ly. This pattern of behavoir caused the teacher much con cern. She had a chat with the principal. Perhaps together they could help Fred. The aim was to develop a friendship. Fred was invited to stop in at the office whenever he Legal Battle Ends Between Chrysler And Stockholders Detroit-luro-Chrysler Corp, and a stockholders' group headed by Detroit attorney Sol Dann have agreed to end their long legal battle which includes charges of misman agement and corruption and a $30 million libel suit. A hearing to end the three year litigation will be held May 13 in a Chancery Court in Wilmington, Del. Dann has agreed to drop Jobless Rate Has Unexpected Rise Washington JIIPIl- An unex pected rise of 250,000 in un employment during February booftcd the nation's jobless rate to 6.1 per cent, the Labor Department reported Thurs day. It was the first time since December, 1001, that the job less rate has reached 6 per cent. The department said 4.9 million persons were unem ployed during February com pared with 4.5 million in the same month a year ago. The 4.9 million figure was the highest recorded since Julv, 1961. The department said total non-farm employment rose by more than 500.000 to 62.2 mil lion In February and was 1.2 million above a year ago after adjusting for seasonal conditions. more tluin 20 mismanage ment charges against some of Chrysler's present and past officers, Including for mer President L. L. Colbert and William C. Newberg and former Chairman K. T. Kel ler. Drop Suit Chrysler will drop a $30 million libel suit against Dann. And in line with Darin's charges, Chrysler will change its incentive compensation plan to require higher cor porate earnings before execu tives can get earnings. The legal battle was one of the most publicized in fi nancial history. It started in 1960 when Newberg was forced to resign as president on conflict of interest charg es. Colbert stepped down in 1961 when Townscnd and Love took over. Dann charged general mis management and accused cer tain officials of having inter est In supplier companies do ing business with Chrysler. He also attacked the stock option and bonus plan for top executives. Hit and Ron Victim Found Near Lakeview felt uneasy or lost his tem per. With the next explosive in cident, Fred hesitated to see the principal. The teacher brought him to the office. The principal did not press the issue. Fred did not want to discuss what had happen ed. Eventually, after several more incidents and visits Fred started talking about his prob lems. This was promising. During the next month, his temper outbursts were less and less frequent. He had found another outlet. The talks with the princi pal were relaxing. Fred be gan to understand his own problem. He wanted to con trol his temper. As he dis cussed each incident, the causes became less important. In this way, he developed the needed control. The success of t h i s ap proach has several implica tions for working with chil dren. The key is to provide an escape which docs not de stroy a child's pride. A child often faces situations which he docs not know how to handle. He becomes frustrat ed. The result may be a temp er tantrum or other undesir able action. Often Us Fists Parents should recognize that children have many ; things to learn. Dealing with i difficult situations is one of them. Young children often I use their fists to settle argu- I menls. As they grow this method becomes less and less ! acceptable. Unfortunately, so- j ciety is faced by many indi viduals who have not develop ed correct social behavior. The growt'.i of understanding and ability to handle un pleasant situations is achieved through experience and guid ance. Parents and others concern ed with the child's develop ment should use the many available opportunities to achieve acceptable social be havior. When children re spond improperly, they need understanding and direction. Remove the dead end types of situations. Show them that there are other ways to deal with these problems. This will . Witnesses believe that the Almighty is wrathful at Chris tians because they call him "God" instead of using his proper name, Jehovah. They have their own translation of the Bible in which Jehovah has been substituted for God more than 6,000 times. Although they look forward with joy to an imminent and fiery destruction of the pres ent world, Witnesses do not believe In a hell. The wicked people who do not qualify for perpetual bliss after the battle of Armageddon ill not be condemned to eternal punish ment. They will simply be ex tinguished. . Witness theology does pro vide for heaven, but only a select "little flock" of 144,000 persons will go there. Others saved from he final debacle wil1 remain on es"-th enjoying a trouble-free exist nee for ever. Magazine Provided Name The official name of the so ciety is derived from the title of a magazine, '""he Watch tower," founded in 1879 by Charles Taze Russell, an Alle gheny, Pa., " ''irdasher who was attracted to adventist doc trines of biblical interpreta tion. He acquir d a body of fol lowers, origina"y known as Russellites, and predict' i that the world would come to an end in 1914. Witness theolo gians have since reinterpreted his prophecy and hold that 1914 marked the beginning of an "invisible struggle" in heaven which will culminate in the fiery battle of Armeged don on earth, any day now. After RussrM's death in 1916, the movement was head ed by a Missouri lawyer, Joseph F. Rutherf rd. He con-ti..-ed the emphasis on an im minent end of time, and was author of the famous Witness prophecy: "Millions now liv ing will never die." Rutherford died of cancer in 1942 and was succeeded by Nathan H. Knoor, of Bethle hem, Pa., who had been a full time Witr.ess since he gradu ated from high school in 1923. Knorr is a quiet and retir ing man compared t his col orful predecessors. He has been responsible for the pres ent high degree of organiza tional efficiency In the so ciety, as well as for putting its prodigious output of litera-tu- (125 million books, tracts and magazines a year) on s businesslike basis. The society's headquarters, called Bethel House, and its printing plant are located in Brooklyn. Full-time workers, of whom there are about 5,000 in the movement, receive their room, board and $14 a month spending money. Everyone, including President Knorr, lives on the same standard. Other Witnesses earn their own living in everyday jobs and carry on their house-to-house evangelism during eve nings and week ends. The movement in modern times has been notably devoid of scandals.
