But Ru binstein, a profesional pianist for 68 years, admits he 8 al ways nervous before a con cert. (UPI) Pianist Retains Vigor and Desire To Change at 74 By ROBERTA C. SCHWARTZ United Press International Washington IUPII After 68 years as a concert pianist. Arthur Rubinstein could close his keyboard any day now nd claim with considerable justification that his career las been as successful as It nas been long. But it's not part of his makeup to stop and look back. At 74, Rubinstein is a vig , orous perfectionist. His goal is "To change, to grow, to get something new." "When I come onto the stage to play they think, 'there's good old Rubinstein,' " he said. "I am an old man and there's a good dose of friend ship between me and my audience. That's a lovely feel ing but it has not much to do with the music." Rubinstein plays with power and vitality, sometimes leaping from his chair to strike the keyboard. He says these energetic jumps arc strenglh-savers, not artistic . mannerisms. Needs Body 8irength "I use the full weight of my body and my arms to make an impact on the piano," he said. "Sometimes I can't get that Impact from a sitting position." That he Is not content to sit on his laurels from days past is best evidenced by Rubin stein's uneasiness at the start of every concert. "I am always nervous be fore a concert," the Polish born artist admits. "Every new concert is a debut." "I love to make records," he said, "because I am amazed that a machine can reproduce so well. But four months later I can't bear to listen to It. 1 go forward and the record remains the same." Rubinstein said he Is "lazy" when it comes to rehearsing for concerts and he recom ments "Intelligent practice" to aspiring pianists. "It was never possible for me to prac tice more than three hours a day." he added. "My brain doesn't respond to longer practice periods. He called overpractlce "the most stupid thing" a pianist can do because it makes his performance less spontaneous. you must bring a fresh drop a concert," he believes, "and you muslb ring a fresh drop of blood" to each perform ance. Rubinstein said his three most popular works for the piano are the first Tschaikow sky concert, the Rachmani noff second, and the Grieg piano concerto. Although he never performs the Grieg work in public, Rubinstein has recorded It four times and each time it has sold 100.000 copies. "In our civilized, cultivated old western world, a piece Willi the big chords gets the maximum response," he said, "If the artist makes faces, the audience will become even more enthusiastic. But this has nothing to do with the quality of the perform ante." Rubinstein described musician's life as a privileged existence. "We are not In volved politically or econo mically," he said. "What we win more than anything else is hearts." A professional pianist since he was six, Rubinstein said a pianist's life is "the most divine kind of living I can imagine. We are dealing with something that we absolutely worship." Eleanor L. - It's the only way I can be sure to be early. 8ean L. - We have a cloclr, in every room but no two agree. When I leave the house in the morning I must re member to subtract anywhere from 3 to 8 minutes from whatever clock I'm looking at. I set my own watch by the radio, but sometimes I tune in late or get Interested in an other station and miss the time check. I've begged Eleanor not to tamper with the clocks. Twice a year, when Daylight Saving Tlr.ie comes in and goes out, I personally set every clock precisely according to "the musical note" which marks the hour on the radio. A few days later, we run by "Elea nor Time." It not only drives me daft, but confuses any one who comes to the house. Eleanor L. - I guess its a wife's lot to have to take all sorts of unmerited abuse, but no praise when things turn out nicely. If it weren't for my little trick with the clocks, Sean would be missing his train, the kids would be late for school, and I'd never be ready for appointments. I'm a slowpoke by nature. I need lots of time. That's why I find it very comforting to be able to say to myself, It's not THAT late, really!" So, if I see the clock run past the zero hour, I know all is not lost. But, more important. we have power failures once a while. Once the electric clocks lost 10 minutes when. an inspector made some tests. We didn't know it till Sean found our clocks were SLOW. But only by a minute, so no one was late. - The Cauncil-Everyone has quirks, only Eleanor's quirk worKs. sne gets em to the church (and everywhere else) on time. Her idiosyncrasy is her attitude that clocks have only that one purpose. It does not occur to her that Sean and others may have a natural curiosity, once in a while, to know exactly what time it is. And looking the only place they can look tor the answer. at the household clocks, their natural urge may well be to smash 'em! Or to shake El eanor slightly, since it's only alight misdemeanor, and in righteous cause - that 0 punctuality. ' ' The solution of this little household tempest lies in one, ONE untouchable timeplce. Sean can put barbed wire around it or attach It to a bur glar alarm to make sure El eanor doesn't come near it. To make life easy for her, he might even hide it in a dark closet, (Be sure it has a radi um dial.) But he can call the operator and get Naval Ob servatory Time as soon as Old Reliable is out of its wrappings. Then Eleanor will be free to play with the foy er, kitchen, bedroom, and liv- ingroom guides. She s just a romantic who can be indulged. We can pic ture her in front of the TV set. It's a gripping show. The hero Is about to be choked and the clock says 10 p.m. She sighs with relief, because she knows the clock is fast and there's still time for - choose one - the sheriff, Army, Navy, cops to save him. Others in the room have given him up, but not Eleanor. It s all a little game she plays with herself. And it's true, especially In partment houses, that the current gets turned off for brief periods without anyone telling the tenants. So a mar gin of ahead-of-timeness can be viewed as a precaution.
