When the stroke oc c u r red - es pecially i it happened to a Alvarei p a r ent who for some time had been so ill and senile that he was only a burden to himself and every one who had to take care of him - the family wanted him to be left in his own bed at home, and they wanted to wait a day or two to see if he would show any sign of rallying. , But the -doctor called for an ambulance and rushed the old man to a hospital, where for 3 or 4 days, the doctor made dozens of laboratory tests and tried out all sorts of treat ments. Then the man died, as any wise doctor could have prophesied he would, and the family received first a huge hospital bill, and then a huge doctor bill which cleaned out their bank account. I thought of these families as I read the report of a care ful study made by Drs. E. S. Cooper, Johannes Ipsen, and H. Dale Bowen of Philadel phia. Their paper ought to be read and memorized by doc tors all over the country, be cause they show clearly that if, after a bad stroke, the per son is sleepy, it is a bad sign; if he is very sleepy, it is a worse sign, and if he is in a "coma" (unconscious) he will probably die, no matter what is done. I do hope that if I ever get i bad stroke, the doctor will not put a tube into my nose and will not puncture me all over to give medicines and to get blood for a hundred tests. I hope someone will be around to protect me, and lot me die in peace. I hope that if I am speechless, badly para lyzed and much much of my mind gone. I will be permit' ted to go: I hope no one tries I blood cholesterol. to drag out my suffering lor a few days or weeks or months. If after my big stroke I get a pneumonia, I will no want to be cured of it. If, however, after a few weeks, much of my paralysis is gone, my speech is coming back and my mind is working well, I will want to have help from a physiotherapist to keep my muscles in good con dition, and a speech therapist is to help me to learn to talk again. single egg because it contains cholesterol, and some now are refusing to give their chil dren butter and cream; some are giving them only margarine. Here on my desk is a letter from a woman who wants to know if she must use mar garine. Actually, there are several different types of mar. garinc, some made mainly with animal fat and others with vegetable oils. The ones made of vegetable oils have less tendency to raise the level of blood cholesterol, but for a man like me, who never eats more than 2 or 3 pats of butter a day, it is useless to change to a special margarine because the change effected in my blood cholesterol would not be measurable, it would be so small. Other mothers wonder if they must give their children only skim milk. It might be a good idea, if the woman has children who show a great tendency to get fat. Another woman wonders if fat has any value in the diet besides that of putting pounds of weight on the cater. Yes: many years ago, a physiolo gist showed that some fat is needed in our diets. Certainly, fat adds much to the good taste of our food. Today there is evidence, however, that persons with a tendency to get a high blood cholesterol, with perhaps tendency to hardening of the arteries, will do well not to each much fat, and especially fat of animal origin. Oils of vegetable origin seem usually to be less harmful. 1 think it wise, though, not to make people unhappy all the time by denying them an egg in the morning and some cream and butter and shortening in a number of their foods Many a mother who has the problem of keeping a husband or one or two children from getting very fat, would do well to buy few fatty foods and to put on the table some lean meat, plus vegetables, salads and fruits. That will help her loved ones to stay thin. This type of diet will be helpful for her husband if he is over-weight and has a high nil -gjf 'tJ-: . ;-.ij.l!i-'tv, , - i CAMUCOtN AOUAK1S VIyss' 11 . In fact, this style home is becoming more and more pop ular. It is often the most econom ical house to build in areas where land values have be come so high. Here you have all the advantages of second floor bedrooms but with an exciting exterior design that seems to hug the ground. There's a world of modern day conveniences in this prac tical dream home. Especially note the unusual size of all rooms which has been achiev ed in just a little over 1,500 square feet. There is access from the entry to a guest closet the sec ond floor and the huge living room. A large bay with a bank of five windows plus a huge corner fireplace are the fas cinating highlights of this room, A partial wall with turned posts above separates the liv- me and family rooms.
