Neverthe less, piano tuners do have their oc cupat i o n a 1 West hazards. There is always a chance that a siring will snap and flagel late them in E-flat, or that the lid of a baby grand will drop on their heads. The perils of piano - tuning recently were cited by mem bers of the Piano Technicians Guild. as one reason for pass ing a resolution urging that the standard for tuning "A" above "middle C" be kept 440 vibrations a second. Guild members noted with alarm that some symphony orchestras were tuning on an "A" with 442 vibrations. They deplored the trend to a higher pitch, asserting that it could make their work more dan gerous. ' Extra tension on the strings might cause a vintage piano, whose structure had been weakened by years of absorb ing sour notes, to fly apart, they pointed out. . The guild indicated it would carry its case to the National Bureau of Standards, and it was the prospect of governmental interve n t i o n that aroused my interest in the controversy. I called the bureau to see if the tuners had contacted v it. The man said they had not. Furthermore, he indicated there was nothing the bureau could do to succor and com fort them, or relieve their anxieties. Although the bureau pres ently recognizes the "A" above "middle C" favored by the tuners, this is not done for either aesthetic or humane reasons. 11 is merely abiding by an international agreement fixing 440 vibrations as the standard pitch. "If an orchestra or any one else wants to tune at a higher pitch, that ia an artistic matter over which we have no control," the. spokesman said. I then called the National Symphony Orchestra to ascer tain its feelings on the issue. It seems that the basic struggle, which has been raging for years, is between stringed instrument players, who want to tune at 442 vi brations for greater brilliance of tone, and the woodwinds, who find it easier to play at lower pitch. Dr. Howard Mitchell, the conductor, said he regards the 440 "A" as a satisfactory compromise - and will retain that pitch. I trust this will help make the world safe for piano tuners.
