Vi Tat Woman Who Bruise Easily Dozeng of women, usually past middle age, want to know why every to often they find a DiacK ana blue gpot, per haps on the outside of one thigh. They want to know if this indi catei a d 1 s- ease, or if they just bruise j easily. I often A'"rti puzzie over this. If a woman with this problem comes into the office, I always have her blood stud ied to make sure that she has nothing seriously wrong, es pecially with the clotting mechanism of the blood. Al. most always, the laboratory man fails to find anything wrong;, the woman does not feel ill.' If I hear from her a year or two later, I learn that she did not develop any ill' ness. Curiously, men rarely complain of this trouble. I imagine that often the black and blue spot resulted from a bump which at the time was not noticed, but it Is conceivable that in these cases the woman's tiny blood vessels tend to rupture easily. I am sorry to say that I know so little about this condition and I know of no medicine to take for it. Dr. Hollenbeck's Work Commended Ashland-President Elmo N. Stevenson of Southern Ore gon college has received a letter from Bowen C. Dees. assistant director of the Na tional Science foundation, commending the work of Dr. Irene Hollenbeck, SOC pro fessor of science, for her out standing contributions at an NSF meeting in Washington, DC. According to Dr. Steven son, the meeting was conduct ed in January for the evalua tion of proposals for in-serv ice Institutes for elementary sen ooi teacners and super visors of science and mathe matics programs, and was to select the most effect! e pro posals for improving the com petence of elementary teach ers in those fields. Dr. Mevenson pointed out, the NSF officials are confident that their program can main tain high standards and make effective contributions to ward Improving the overall quality of education in the sciences. Dupuytren's Contracture. If it gets to be a nuisance, it can usually be removed by a sur geon, preferably an orthoped ist, who after lifting up the skin of the palm will dissect out and remove the contracted strip of fibrous tissue which is pulling on the fingers. This is a simple operation which can be quickly per formed; it should not cause any risk to the patient's life, and he should be walking around a day or two after ward. Because the operation is so easily performed, I see no reason for a person's put ting up for years with the nuisance of a contracture which is unsightly and inter feres with the use of the hand.
