2 C SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10. 1963 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON Hollander's Art Exhibit Announced Ashland A newcomer In Rogue valley art circles is Alex Bos, impressionistic ar tist from Amsterdam, Hoi land, who now makes his home In Ashland. Today he is to be honored at a recep tion at the Ashland Art gal. lery. 31 Water street. On display will be 25 sketches, drawings and paint ings by Mr. Bos, ranging (rom portraits to landscapes and fantasies. It will be the first time this collection has been presented in the United States. The artist studied at the Groninge Art school and at the Art academy in Amster dam before coming to this country less than a year ago, Last fall he married Johanna Knles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Knies, 600 Chest nut street. The Knies family came to Ashland from Am. sterdam the previous year. The Alex Bos show will run through February with gal. lery hours from 1 to 10 p.m At today's reception from 2 to 4 p.m. coffee and tea will be served. Mr. and Mrs. Robert On. stad have announced that gal. lery members may take ad. vantage of the rental plan whereby pictures may be pur chased through rental pay ments. The public is invited to attend the reception for Mr. Bos or to view the display any afternoon or evening. 1 Soprano Will Sing In Ashland Ashland Marion Downs, nationally known lyric so prano, will present two re citals in Ashland on Sunday, February 17. The first will be at Southern Oregon college at 3 p.m., and the second at the First Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. The talented artist has Ihe distincition of a Fulbright grant from the U.S. State de partment and was recipient of an Atkinson foundation award for opera and folk studies. She has presented concerts in the Scandinavian countries, Europe, and Mexico. Marion Downs received her master's decree In music Columbia university and has siuoiea at tne Jullllard Con servatory of Music In New Yorjc City and at the Verdi conservatory Jn Milan, Italy. Mrs. Downs Is the widow or tne late Karl Downs, young Methodist minister, who was president of Sam Houston col lege, Huntsville, Texas. In his memory there is the Downs Memorial Methodist Church in Oakland, Calif, and the Downs high school In Weimar, Tex. As a concert personality, the lyric soprano convinces the listener instantly of her versatility and talent. Her un usual accompaniment to her programs gives a uniqueness and Individuality. Her singing of Negro spirituals has both warmth and depth. There will be no charge for her concert at the college but a free offering will be accept ed at the First Methodist church. Buffing ton, Campbell road, left Fri day for Mexico City, Mexico and Puerto Vatlarta nn the coast between Acapulco and Mazatlan. They stopped at Fresno, Calif., to join Dr. and Mrs. J. D. Rogue Sis-Q Council Slates Annual Squareup Southern Oregon square dancers, affiliated as the Rogue Sis-Q Council of the Oregon Federation ot Square Dance clubs, will join forces to host the sixth annual Square up. It is set for March 16 and 17, and some 500 dancers are expected from the entire Northwest for the week end in the Rogue valley. Acitivity will center at Britt Memorial hall on the Southern Oregon college cam pus in Ashland. Dance ses sion will be scheduled during Saturday, and climaxed by dancing Saturday night to the calling of Dick Holton, out standing guest caller Irom the Sacramento area Mr. Holton is known to his associates variously as "Mr. Five by Five'' and "Mr. Pink Pants" and reportedly is not- Students Give Recital Piano and organ students of Mrs. Ray Powers, 707 Sher man street, were presented in recital February 2 in the Girls Community club.
