fi A FRIDAY, Knights of Altar Formal Investiture Ceremonies Held Twenty-three boyi of Sa cred Heart parish became members ol the KnighU ol the Altar yesterday morning at the first formal investiture ceremonies of the organiza tion ever to be held in the lo cal Catholic church. The Knights of the Altar is an international society, with headquarters at Notre Dame, Ind. All of the boys participat- ina in the rites are eighth grade students at St. Mary's school and have been prepar ing for the occasion for sev eral months under the direc tion of the Rev. Gilbert Lu- lay. To qualify for membership each boy was required to serve a minimum number of hours at mass and other relig- 1 Am A Person' To Be Topic at Congregational In observance of Race Re lations Sunday, the Rev. Rob ert W. Tull, minister of the Congregational church, will preach a sermon this Sunday entitled "I Am A Person The church will meet from 11 a.m. to noon Sunday for worship and church school at the Hoover Grade school on Siskiyou blvd., just east of South Modoc rd. This is the temporary location of the church's Sunday activities while plans are being made to build a new sanctuary and educational unit on East Jackson st. at Berkeley Way. During the worship hour, child care will be provided for children younger than three years of age in the school health room. The class for three, four and five year olds will meet in the school band room. The first through sixth grade - classes will be held in. the school cafeteria, and the seventh, eighth and ninth grade young people will meet in the lobby of the school office. Progreuiv Supper Sunday the adult members and friends of the church will meet at 6 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Duane O. Rich ardson, 740 West 14th St., for the beginning of a progressive supper. The various stages of the meal will take the group to a number of homes. The evening will conclude with dessert at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bish, Wag ner Creek rd., Talent. The regular monthly meet ings of the board of deacons and the board of trustees will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. These meetings will be fol lowed by a meeting of the church council at 8:30 p. m. The meeting plare this month will be the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hcnsclman, 2108 Woodlawn dr. The Laymen's Fellowship will meet for breakfast at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the Town House cafe, 127 South Central ave. Carl Mai, who also pre sided at the investiture, assist ed by Father Lulay. Servers were Philip Hollen and Larry Hochstatter. After mass the candidates went to the altar to be vested with cassock and surplice, the symbols of their position as altar boys and the purity they are to strive to preserve, and to be presented with member ship certificates and pins Then, standing at the foot of the altar, the Knights recited their pledge and promise. Receiving the highest rank of grand knight were Daniel Stinson, Eric Jensen, Douglas Nelson, Steve Lewis, Glen Meeker, Steven Rose, Larry Hochstatter, Philip Hollen, and Michael Moiyneaux. Rank of knight commander was conferred upon five boys; rank of knight was earned by seven, and two were made pages. Following the ceremonies the boys, Father Mai and Fa ther Lulay were honored at breakfast served In the school annex by several mo thers and eighth grade girls, Area Conference To Be Attended By Local Delegation Seventh-day Adventists will hold their eleventh quadren nial session of the North Pa cific Union conference in Portland, Feb. 11 to 14, ac cording to Elder C. C. Weis, an official delegate to the con ference, pastor of the Med ford Advcntist church. Also attending from this area will be Elder Arvln Win kle, pastor of the Ashland and Valley View churches. Evan gelists Duane Corwin and Sid ney Nelson, Dr. Harold Reith, and W. E. Atkins of the Shady Point church. Purpose Stated Elder Weis states that (he purpose of the session is to elect executive and depart mental officers for the North Pacific Union conference for the ensuing four-year term. Policies will be adopted that will govern procedures in the denomination's 308 churches n the Northwest as well as its many educational and med ical institutions in the terri tory. The meeting will be attend ed by the president of the General Conference of Sev enth-day Adventists, Elder R. R. Flguhr, Washington, D.C., and other officials.- A ministerial seminar and evangelistic council will be held in connection with the convention, reported Elder C. A. Scriven, president of the North Pacific Union confer ence, who will be chairman of the four-day session. Melvin Lee will be the guest speaker at the morning worship service of the Free Methodist church during the absence of the pas tor, Roland Stewart, who will be in Klamath Falls holding a scries of evangelistic meet ings. Mr. Lee is a urmluule uf Greenville college and a form er pastor of Kamloops, B. C. In the evening service the Rev. Kenneth Hargcr will be the guest speaker. He is a former pastor in the Oregon conference and Is presently working with the Sunday school at Lake Creek. Sermon Series To Be Heard by Local Presbyterians Continuing his sermon ser ies on the Gospel of Luke, Dr. D. Kirkland West will preach on, "The Cost of Disciple ship" Sunday at the First Presbyterian church. The Senior high choir will present. CHURCH NEWS National Religious Publicity Council Baptist one term In Portugal as a missionary before assuming his present position. Mr. and Mrs. N. T. Dellin ger, missionary appointees to British Honduras, will speak at both the youth hour at 6 p.m. and the 7 p.m. church service. They were recently appointed by the Conserva tive Baptist Home Mission so ciety to their field and will leave soon. The speakers will rotate from one church to the other for the conference. District Official To Speak at First Nazarene Dr. W. D. McGraw, Port land, district superintendent of the Oregon Pacific District Church of the Nazarene, will preach in both the morning and evening services Sunday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st Dr. McGraw has now been serving as district superin tendent in this area for his denomination for more than ten years. Music in the services, ac cording to Perry Christiansen, minister of music and educa tion, will be presented in the 11 a.m. service by the sanc tuary choir singing "Blessed Be the Fountain", and a tenor solo by Dean von Stein. Dur ing the 7 p.m. service the Fishermen male quartet will sing and a women's trio by Mrs. Rex Goblc, Mrs. Dick Horton, and Mrs. Jerry An derson. An instrumental num ber will be presented by Bob Hansen. The pastor, the Rev. Harold M. Sanner, is holding Youth Week services in the Church of the Nazarene at McMinn ville. Last week the congregation voted to retain the pastor for four more years. Monday evening a spaghetti feed will be held in the activ ity building for all teen-agers who have read at least three of the missionary books for this year. This is to he given by Dr. McGraw for the youth of the southern Oregon area churches. It is expected that abuut 40 young people will participate. Unitarians to Hear William McKinney The Rogue Valley Unitar ian fellowship will hear an address Sunday by William McKinney, Southern Oregon college. His topic will be "Pride Sin or Virtue. Mr. McKinney has been instructor of Religious education for the junior high school age group of the Unitarian Church school. Dr. Earl William Benbow, v.-ho ii sup plying the pulpit of the Cen tral Point Presbyterian church, will preach Sunday at 11 a.m. on the subject, "Un answered Prayer." Elvina Colburn, pastor of Concord Spiritualist chapel, Gold Hill, will speak of missionary work that she did recently in Shreveport, La., and tell of the historical background of the Cassadaga Spiritualist camp at Cassadaga, Fla., Sun day at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Bianca Corona will play a piano solo. There will be spiritual com munication according to the pastor. Mrs. Colburn returned to her home after a four weeks trip to Florida and Louisiana. She was re-ordalned into the National Spiritualist asso ciation at Cassadaga Spirit ualist camp. From Florida she traveled to Shreveport, La., where she lectured five days. Mrs. Colburn said she now has three students here who are studying for their licen tiates certificates. These peo ple are also studying and de veloping various phases of mediumship, she said.
