Two Area Finalists In Brand Name Event Among the retail firms selected this year as finalists in the brand name retailer o-the-ycar competition are Lea Motors Inc. and Acme Hard ware company, both Medford. The awards are given each year by Brand Names founda tion to honor leading mer chants for their presentation of manufacturer trademarked products. Finalists will now submit full presentations of their 1962 advertising, merchandis ing, sales training and other brand promotional activities with the final presentation made in April in New York City. Medford Boy Named To Coege Dean's List Among the students at Cal ifornia State polytechnic col lege, San Luis Obispo, who have been named to the dean's list for outstanding ac ademic accomplishment is Larry G. Hammond, 423 Be atty St., Medford, a major in animal husbandry. Students are recognized for achieving an overall fall quar ter grade average of B or better. East German Guards Escape to Vest Berlin - IUPII - Two East German border guards in uniform and carrying their weapons fled to West Berlin across the snow-blanketed death strip today. West Ber lin police reported, The Communists send their border guards to duty in pairs, so each can keep an eye on the other. Hence one guard rarely trusts his com panion enough to admit he wants to flee. However the two who reach ed West Berlin today appar ently had agreed to flee to gether. They made their way across the wide strip which the Communists had cleared to give guards a field of fire at refugees, and then crawl ed through barbed wire into a northern district of West Berlin. Kennedy Spends Week End at Estate Washington - H'Pli - Presi dent Kennedy returned to the White House by helocopter today after a week end with his family at his Glen Ora es tate near Middlcburg, Va. The President, who went to Middlcburg Saturday, return ed without his family. Despite frigid temperatures, he car ried his overcoat as he walk ed briskly from the helicop ter to his office. Kennedy had been sched uled to return to Washington Sunday to attend a Roman Catholic "red mass'' but can celled the trip because of poor weather conditions. Donovan, Castro Confer on Release Miami - IUPH - New York attorney James B. Donovan returned here Saturday night from a conference with Cuban Premier Fidel Castro in Havana and said that he was "most optimistic" that about 25 Americans held prisoner in Cuba soon would be re leased. Donovan said the basis for the release of the Americans would be "entirely different" than the ransoming of 1.113 Cuban invasion prisoners whose release last month he arranged. But Donovan indicated that completion of delivery of the Sd3 million worth of prisoner ransom goods to Havana would be a factor in freeing the Americans, held at the Isle of Pines. Donovan flew to Cuba Sat urday morning and returned last night. Youth Allegedly Admits Stabbings Pawlucket, R.I. - IUPII - A husky, high school athlete, who allegedly admitted hack ing two married women to death because of an urge, was to appear in court today for a l.)-month-old slaying. Thomas R. Knott, 17, cap lain of the Tolman High school football team and a track star, confessed Sunday to the knife slayings of Mrs. Nancy Ann Frenier, 19, and Mrs. Edith Martin, 38, of At lleboro, Mass., police said. Authorities were to seek a waiver in East Providence Family Court today to have Knott tried as an adult in the slaying of Mrs. Frenier here Dec. 22, 1961. Mrs. Martin was killed in her home last Friday. Knott, son of a steamfitter, was arrested Saturday night after authorities linked his car to one seen leaving the Martin residence Friday. "I knew I had to kill some one,'' Pawtucket police quot ed the youth. "I'm glad you caught me because I would have done it again. Conducting the classes will be the Rev. Donald Klein. The training classes, for cen sus takers, will be held Jan. 29 through Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday, Jan. 31, at 2 p.m. at Medford High school. Final plans for the census were discussed last week at a meeting of the committee, headed by Dr. D. Kirkland West. More than 35 persons representing 21 churches in Medford, Central Point, and Jacksonville, attended. Added to Committee Added to the committee at that time were the Rev. John A. Ilg, Sacred Heart Catholic church, and Maj. William Ricken of the Salvation Army. Each participating church will appoint a census chair man, who will, in turn, e cruit approximately 20 per cent of their church's mem bership for census takers. Dr. West said it was impor tant for census takers to at tend one of the training la-.s cs to learn how to properly fill in the information and re ceive an identification tag. Census takers will work in pairs, taking the census Feo. IB and 17, and a follow up Feb. 23 and 24. Cards will be sorted by church preference and no preference cards will be lett with the census committee, it was explained. Dr. West added that no information as to the census results will be given to any commercial or outside interests. Dr. Klein is expected in Medford Monday and start making block assignments for the census teams. Officials said current mar ket information indicates that U.S. potato prices are com petitive in some European markets. It urged exporters to take full advantage of the situation, caused by Europ ean crop conditions and bad weather. Representatives of the northeastern potato industry requested the export subsidy Jan. 17 because of large sup plies of potatoes in this coun try. Agriculture officials said today's action will have no ef fect on the potato diversion program announced Dec. 18. The program offers payments to growers for starch, flour and livestock feed.
