East German Guards
Escape to Vest
Berlin - IUPII - Two East
German border guards in
uniform and carrying their
weapons fled to West Berlin
across the snow-blanketed
death strip today. West Ber
lin police reported,
The Communists send their
border guards to duty in
pairs, so each can keep an
eye on the other. Hence one
guard rarely trusts his com
panion enough to admit he
wants to flee.
However the two who reach
ed West Berlin today appar
ently had agreed to flee to
gether. They made their way
across the wide strip which
the Communists had cleared
to give guards a field of fire
at refugees, and then crawl
ed through barbed wire into
a northern district of West
Berlin.

Donovan, Castro
Confer on Release
Miami - IUPH - New York
attorney James B. Donovan
returned here Saturday night
from a conference with Cuban
Premier Fidel Castro in
Havana and said that he was
"most optimistic" that about
25 Americans held prisoner
in Cuba soon would be re
leased. Donovan said the basis for
the release of the Americans
would be "entirely different"
than the ransoming of 1.113
Cuban invasion prisoners
whose release last month he
arranged.
But Donovan indicated that
completion of delivery of the
Sd3 million worth of prisoner
ransom goods to Havana
would be a factor in freeing
the Americans, held at the
Isle of Pines.
Donovan flew to Cuba Sat
urday morning and returned
last night.

"Numbers of people do not

No Subsidies for
Potatoes Planned
Washington - lOTH - The
Agriculture Department said
today that it will not subsi
dize exports of potatoes.
Officials said current mar
ket information indicates that
U.S. potato prices are com
petitive in some European
markets. It urged exporters
to take full advantage of the
situation, caused by Europ
ean crop conditions and bad
weather.
Representatives of the
northeastern potato industry
requested the export subsidy
Jan. 17 because of large sup
plies of potatoes in this coun
try. Agriculture officials said
today's action will have no ef
fect on the potato diversion
program announced Dec. 18.
The program offers payments
to growers for starch, flour
and livestock feed. Seven
states - Maine, Washington,
California, Oregon, Colorado,
Rhode Island and Utah - arc
currently participating in this
program.
