Mali -01PII- "Good evening, my teacher," said President Modibo Keita of Mali, "Good evening, my teach er," said Mrs. Keita. A room ful of fellow students, in eluding several Malian cabinet ministers, addressed similar greetings ' to Alex Bendazzi of Poughkccpsie, N.Y. ' : The occasion was English class at the Malian presidency and Bendazzi was the teacher. In Africa, where independ ence is flowering, some iun- tries speak English, some French - depending on their colonial history. President Keita found it inconvenient to be fluent only In French. For instance, when he met with Ghanian President Kwa me Nkrumah, they could conv municate only through an interpreter. So Kicta decided to brush up on his English. A graduate of Queens college in New York and former so cial worker there, he had studied French at Paris' Sor bonne university. "I drove a Jeep, all dressed in formal wear, up Kolouba hill and into the presidency," Bendazzi recalled. ; " "'I entered by a side-door Into the residence section. Class took place in a drawing room, air-conditioned, with a long, rectangular table in the center. Three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Fri day. From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. after dinner. "The President came in with his wife, both in flow ing native dress. They were 8lways punctual. They told me 'good evening, my teach er,' and shook my hand. Then class began. i "We sat around 1'ie long table, about a dozen of us. The President and I sat oppo site each other across the table at the end near the door. The President set a tape-re corder on the table between us. Has Good Humor "The President is an ex teacher himself," said Ben dazzi, "and he kept the class in good humor. Once in 4 while he would kid one of his ministers on a point of pro nunciation. : "Mrs. Keita found the ex pression 'what about' very funny. It sounded like 'war raba,' a Bambara word mean ing lion." Bendazzi said that for one class the President brought plates, knives, forks, spoons, tangerines, oranges, mangoes and bananas, and wanted to know the words for them In English. "At the end of the class he gave me two tangerines, two oranges and two ba nanas," Bendazzi recalled. "My class continued for three months, with some In terruptions due to the Presi dent's slate affairs. I used the dialogue approach with con versational English. I explain ed some points In French. I brought In some subjects from African life, and they liked it. "The President was the keenest of them all," said Bendazzi. "He always came to class having studied the previous lesson at home, lie felt pride In his progress." Western diplomats in Ba mako believe Keita can speak fair English.
