Lammert, district maintenance supervisor for the Oregon state highway de partment, commented this week after foggy-Icy condl tions earlier caused several ac cidents on the Interstate 5 via duct. The highway department last week installed yellow caution signs slating "Ice" at eac hend of the viaduct, Lam mert said. He added that plans are under way for addi- tional signs on temporary standards with flares, which would be Installed once Icing occurs. Lammert said both the de partment s sandera are back in operation. One was dam agea ivionaay wnen it was struck by a car while it was sanding along the freeway Lammert said the depart ments sanaer naa Been on the freeway viaduct early lueseiay morning but several other icy spots were being sanded in other areas of the valley during the same peri od. Lammert said the depart ment will try to have the via duct sanded every 30 minutes when icy. He noted that sand only give cars a small amount of traction and vehicles op erating too fast will skid if the brakes are applied. Once sand is applied to ice it will remain only as long as traffic is slow and light. Vehicle speed and constant travel re move the sand from the high way, he noted. Lam 'mert said he believed It help ed in clearing the viaduct and preventing major accl dents. The district superintendent noted that on other highways the department mixes rock salt or calcium chloride with the sand to melt snow and ice. Those chemicals can not be used on new concrete pave ment, he noted. Lammert commented that the problem appears to be ed ucating the out-of-vallcy driv er to slow down on a 70-mile- por-hour freeway once they see an "Ice" sign.. The department estimated cigarette output in 1062 at a record 537 billioni up 8 bil lion from 19(11. Of this amount, 496 billion were smoked in the United Slates, 14.2 billion were used by overseas forces, more than 3.1 billion went to Puerto Rico nnd other U.S. islands, Savannah To Reach Portland Friday Portland -(UPB- The NS Sa vannah, the world's fjrst nu clear-powered ship, will ar rive here Friday afternoon for visit. The vessel is scheduled to leave Astoria at 7 a.m. and is scheduled to arrive at Port land at 3 p.m. The Savannah, which Is a joint project of the Atomic Energy commission a.nd the Maritime administration, will be greeted by a flotilla of yachts along with flreboats and helicopters.
