MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON THURSDAY. DECEMBER 27. 1962 Scientists May Create Chart lor Nuclear Particles Stanford, Calif. - UN) - Sci entists who knew the names and numbers nf players on the team of nuclear particles may soon be able to figure out what positions they play. In fact, they may be able In predict who will be com ing out for the team. University of California scientists Dr. Sheldon H. Glas liow and Dr. Arthur H. Rosen feld told the American Phys ical Society conference today that recent discoveries suggest the possibility of a sort of rhavt for these particles as was set up for chemical ele ments in the last century. Not Classified Presently there ate 70-odd nuclear particles that have been discovered but not class ified. If the new theory"vorRs out, it could bring order out of the chaos that has been created by the discovery of there particles in increasing numbers in recent years. When the "periodic chart of tlie elements" was discovered last century; it led to iden tification and prediction of the elements by relating log ically the ones already found. . The new theory for nuclear particles, if verified, might do the same sort of thing. - The new discoveries appear to bear out a theory proposed independently about a year Rgo by Dr. Murray Gell-Mann of the California Institute of Technology and Israeli Army Col. Y. Ne'Eman. The new theory for nuclear particles is a system of ar rangement called the "eight fold way." This term is used because more of the particles fall into groupings of eight than any other. There are four groups of eight particles, one singlet and one collection of 10. Essentially, the same parti cles recur at higher energy Flatps, their characteristics be ing the same as at lower slates but with a higher spin so that they have a greater mass. With such a system it is pos sible to predict new and undis covered particles if they ex ist. Experimental work at the Lawrence Radiation Labor atory during recent months seems to confirm the "eight fold way." The physicists are meeting In a three day joint session with the American Geophysi cal Union in a conclave which will bring more than 1,200 fcicntists and engineers to the campus to hear more than 50(1 papers read on scientific subjects.' Car Thief Eludes Police in Portland Portland -HM- A car thief eluded police in Portland ear ly today following a high speed chase from near Wood burn. Police said the car was stolen from a used car lot in Salem. . One officer who nearly ftopprd the car had to give up when a tire blew out. State. Multnomah county and Portland city police par ticipated in the chase, which reached 120 miles an hour.
