Thompson has turned "ghost breaker." He's out to exorcise the spectres of bygone days that still influence the design and layout of many kitchens. "The ice man is the live liest ghost of all," said Thomp son, a designer for Geneva Kitchens. He pointed out that the ice-carrier's "drippy" en trance though long forgot ten still results in frequent placement of the refrigerator at the back door. Refrigerators should have the freedom of the kitchen and be more conveniently placed, Thompson advised. He maintained that the range, too, has been "living in the past" and suggested moving it from the usual spot near the entrance to the din ing room. Tile dining room no longer is the only dining spot in the house, he said. It's high lime, too, said Thompson, to dispense with the obsolete formula for lay ing out the kitchen as "cor ridor," "L" or "U" shape, in iavor of a more efficient "working triangle." The sink, range and refrigerator form the three working centers of the triangle, with walking dis tance between any two cen ters held to a maximum of 22 feet. Thompson dismisses the no tion that cabinets must be situated along the walls, as once was customary. He sug gested building cabinets out from the wall peninsula or room-divider style to cre ate new cabinet-top counter space. Much kitchen furniture, too, in Thompson's view, is still haunted by the past "when design was restricted to the quaint and the cute, to the kettle, the spoon and rooster motifs." He advocated more sophisti cated furnishings now that it has become as livable as any other room in the house, thanks to venting systems that eliminate cooking odors, decorator-toned cabinets and built-in silent appliances. Carving Tip No matter who docs the carving of the holiday roast at your house, remind him of the first rule of carving. "Cut across the grain." This will produce slices with the best texture and most attrac tive appearance. Steaks are the exception. They are carv ed with the grain. Sewing for crippled children in Shrincr hospitals was the diversion and many of the articles were completed. A memorial service was held for the late Mrs. Ruby Gaynor. At the close of a meeting refreshments were served from a buffet table decorated in the holiday theme. LUXURY LOAF One six-ounce package (one cup) semi-sweet chocolate morsels; one cup butter or shortening; one teaspoon va nilla; 0 n e-fourth teaspoon mace or nutmeg; one cup su gar; five eggs; two cups sift ed all-purpose flour; one tea spoon baking powder; one half teaspoon salt; one-fourth cup orange juice; one-fourth cup finely chopped nuts; grat ed rind of one orange. Melt semi-sweet chocolate morsels over hot (not boiling) water. Cream butter with va nilla and mace. Gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Blend in melted semi-sweet chocolate morsels. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Add alter nately to chocolate mixture with orange juice. Stir in nuts and orange rind. Turn into a wax paper lined 10 x 5 x 3-inch pan. Bake in a slow oven CiOO degrees) 1 hour, 40 minutes. Cool. Invert cake on platter. If desired sprinkle top of cake with sift ed confectioners' sugiir. GOLDEN TEA PUNCH Two cups water: two round ed tablespoons instant tea; one-half cup sugar; three cups orange juice; one cup lemon juice; one cup pineapple ing that can be purchased at grocery stores); one 28-ounce bottle ginger ale; ice mold, or Delia Robbia Ice Wreath. Combine in two-quart con tainer and stir briskly water and Instant tea. Add sugar and stir to dissolve. Add orange juice, lemon juice, pineapple juice and grenadine. Chill. Place ice mold in punch bowl. Pour in instant tea mix ture and ginger ale. Yield: 22 I four-ounce servings. I To make the plain Ice 1 mold as shown in the photo graph, fill metal gelatine mold with water and freeze. Or, if preferred, make a more colorful frozen ring with fruits. DELIA ROBBIA ICE WREATH In the bottom of a ring mold that will fit In your punchbowl, arrange pine apple rings and spiced apple rings. Place green maraschino cherries In the center of the apple rings and red mara schina cherries in the center of the pineapple rings. Place apricot or peach halves between the fruit rings and pour a shallow layer of water inlo the mold. Freeze to set fruits in place. Add more water to fill mold and freeze until solid. Set briefly in a basin of warm water to loosen, then turn into punch, fruit-side up.
