The U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals Wednesday denied five operating unions a re hearing of its decision to let the railroads make sweeping work rule changes that would eliminate 65.000 Jobs. However, the court had not yet dissolved the injunction against the railroads, and rail officials expected the unions to ask the court to leave it in force pending further appeal to the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court turns down the unions, the 100 rail roads would be free to go ahead with the modernization overhaul, including dismissal of 13,000 locomotive firemen within one year. Both sides have predicted that President Kennedy then would move to appoint a pres idential fact-finding board to study the controversy and make nonbinding recommen dations for a settlement. (UP1) Corvallis - An Oregon State university geologist is making the first detailed study of Oregon's Wallowa mountains and his field work is producing some fascinating findings on rocks, minerals, and mountain history. Dr. William H. Taubeneck started his study of the rug ged northeastern Oregon mountains in 19S6. He ex pects to spend at least five more summers in field work before he is ready to write a final comprehensive report on the Wallowas, which are a key area for Interpreting the continental evolution of west ern North America. The Wallowa mountains are vastly different than the Cas cades. Taubeneck pointed out. The Cascades are a volcanic range composed of rocks less than 60 million years in age whereas the Wallowas are an uplifted block of the earth's crust, composed mostly of granite and sedimentary rocks ranging in age between 100 and 240 million years. Wen 'Hoiilod Up' Since the Wallowas were "hoisted up," time and erosion have severely modified the mountains producing the sharp, rugged features that distinguish them now, Taube neck added. Some unique minerals have been found in rock samples taken by Taubeneck, who spends his off hours from teaching in the winter study ing the physical and chemical properties of specimens gath- McGrew Brothers Buys FS Timber McGrew Brothers, Mcd ford, was high bidder this week for 240,000 board feet of national forest timber in the Natural Bridge Blow down Number 1 area, Union Creek Ranger district, Hoguc River National forest, accord ing to Forest Supervisor C. E. Brown. The high bid totaled $10. 5(i(i. compared to the forest service appraised price for the timber of $ti,747, an in crease of 57 per cent. Next high bidder in the or al auction for the timber was J. G. Slack of Prospect. Oth er bidders were Harry Goode, G. S. Elder, William R. Shad wick, Estremado and Sons, and Wayne Ash Logging. The timber in the unit con sisted of 100.000 board feet of Douglas-fir bid in at $48 per thousand board feet, 45, 000 board feet of ponderosa pine and western white pine bid in at $30.75 per thousand board feet, 5,000 board feet of while fir and other species bid in at $12.45 per thousand board feel. 200 Meredith Guards Removed Oxford," Miss. - IUPN - The Army Wednesday withdrew another 200 men from the force guarding Negro student James H. Meredith at the Uni versity of Mississippi, leaving 300 soldiers on the campus. The 66th Military Police company returned to its home base at Ft. Chaffee, Ark., a day after the university let out for the Christmas holidays. The Army's "Ole Miss" out post now includes a command headquarters, administrative and support personnel and a company of the 720th Military Police Battalion from Ft. Hood, Tex. Meredith, who left the cam pus with other students Tues day, had failed to appear in court in his home town of Kosciusko Wednesday and was convicted and fined $10 in absentia on a traffic violation, The fine was paid by Mere dith's forfeited bond and May or Emmctt Carr, who presided over the court, said no further action would be taken in the case. Carr said that, generally, in forfeiture cases, no trial is held but he decided to try Meredith in absentia "to keep the record straight." Police officer Billy Joe Brown testified that the 20- ycar-old Negro failed to yield the right of way to another car while driving through Kosciusko during a visit with his parents last week end. Currently, Taubeneck is ob taining more precise informa tion regarding unique miner als in order to better inter pret the earth processes in volved in the formation of rocks such as those of the Wallowas. The Wallowa Range covers about 700 square miles and its tallest peaks reach up nearly 10.000 feet. Although Taubeneck 's research pro gram will provide detailed geologic maps of the moun tains, his studies are primar ily directed toward a more complete understanding of the evolution of western North America. His work is supported by grants from the National Sci-1 ceived this fall ence Foundation.
