Railroads Win
Another Round
Chicago cUPli The nation's
railroads were one step closer
today on the long, legally com
plicated road to abolishment
of feathcrbedding.
The U. S. Circuit Court of
Appeals Wednesday denied
five operating unions a re
hearing of its decision to let
the railroads make sweeping
work rule changes that would
eliminate 65.000 Jobs.
However, the court had not
yet dissolved the injunction
against the railroads, and rail
officials expected the unions
to ask the court to leave it in
force pending further appeal
to the Supreme Court.
If the Supreme Court turns
down the unions, the 100 rail
roads would be free to go
ahead with the modernization
overhaul, including dismissal
of 13,000 locomotive firemen
within one year.
Both sides have predicted
that President Kennedy then
would move to appoint a pres
idential fact-finding board to
study the controversy and
make nonbinding recommen
dations for a settlement.

Corvallis - An Oregon
State university geologist is
making the first detailed
study of Oregon's Wallowa
mountains and his field work
is producing some fascinating
findings on rocks, minerals,
and mountain history.
Dr. William H. Taubeneck
started his study of the rug
ged northeastern Oregon
mountains in 19S6. He ex
pects to spend at least five
more summers in field work
before he is ready to write a
final comprehensive report on
the Wallowas, which are a
key area for Interpreting the
continental evolution of west
ern North America.
The Wallowa mountains are
vastly different than the Cas
cades. Taubeneck pointed out.
The Cascades are a volcanic
range composed of rocks less
than 60 million years in age
whereas the Wallowas are an
uplifted block of the earth's
crust, composed mostly of
granite and sedimentary
rocks ranging in age between
100 and 240 million years.

Since the Wallowas were
"hoisted up," time and erosion
have severely modified the
mountains producing the
sharp, rugged features that
distinguish them now, Taube
neck added.
Some unique minerals have
been found in rock samples
taken by Taubeneck, who
spends his off hours from
teaching in the winter study

forfeiture cases, no trial is

Kosciusko during a visit with
his parents last week end.

rocks such as those of the
Wallowas.
The Wallowa Range covers
about 700 square miles and
its tallest peaks reach up
nearly 10.000 feet. Although
Taubeneck 's research pro
gram will provide detailed
geologic maps of the moun
tains, his studies are primar
ily directed toward a more
complete understanding
of the evolution of western
North America.
His work is supported by
grants from the National Sci-1 ceived this fall
