Mill Margaret Lance field (ilandlng. right) a sophomore, ii the Students To Present The Nutcracker Suite The "Nutcracker Suite" will be presented by students of the Colleen Hope Dance stu dio Sunday, December 23 trom 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., on Channel 10, KMED-TV. This is the second year that the studio and KMED have jointly produced dance drama on television as a Christmas greeting lor Southern Oregon residents. Last year's produc tion was the "Little Match Girl." . The "Nutcracker Suite," now a Christmas classic for American .children, first was Blue Star Mothers Participate in Domiciliary Events Blue Star Mothers will spon or a games party for the wheel chair members of the Veterans Domiciliary Friday, December 28. Refreshments Will be served. Two members of the club participated in gift wrapping for veterans on December 10 when representatives of vari ous organizations met for this purpose at the domiciliary. Mrs. Helen Watson, 617 Catherine street, was rostess to the group for their De cember 13 meeting when a potluck luncheon was served and a gift exchange was held. Officers who were elected at the meeting are to be Install ed at the January meeting. Appointive officers also will be announced at that time. Fifty PluTcFub Party Scheduled Christmas music and songs will be featured on the pro gram for the Medford Fifty Plus club party Friday, De cember 21 in the St. Mark's Episcopal church Guild hall, corner of West Fifth street and North Oakriale. avenue. The meeting will open at 12:30 p.m. The hall will be especially decorated in the holiday theme with a Christinas tree and an exchange of gifts will be held. Men are to take gifts for men and women are to take gifts lor women. Mem bers whose birthdays are in December will be honored. Brownie Scouts Party Planned A Christmas party for all Brownie Girl Scouts of Med ford and Ashland areas will be conducted at the Medford Girl Scout headquarters rec reation room, 431 West Ninth street, Friday, December 2R from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Gifts will be exchanged. Folk danc ing, games and refreshments ire on the program. Each troop is to take a doz en cookies and each girl a wrapped gift not to exceed fifty cents In cost. Sunshine Girls To Sing Carols Pythian Sunshine Girls will meet at 7:30 o'clock this eve ning at the Pythian hall and from there will leave to sing Christmas carols. On Tuesday evening the girls also sang carols for the Pythian knights, and on De cember 13 they held their Christmas party. A gift ex change was held and the eve ning was spent in dancing. The Idea for the story came from a fairy tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann, the great German romantic writ- The overture sets the "once- upon-a-llme" theme and the curtain opens on an old fash ioned Christmas party. The guests, young and old gather around the Christmas tree. Clara, the youngest daughter of the house Is heart broken when her gift of a brightly painted wood nutcracker is broken by one of the little boys. After the guests have departed, Clara slips back into the living room and with her nutcracker In her arms goes to sleep under the tree. Has Dream In her dreams she awakens In the midst of a battle be tween the Mouse queen, the Nutcracker and a legion of mice and toy soldiers. Finally Clara herself kills the mouse queen and the NutcracKcr is transformed Into a handsome prince who invites her to his enchanted Kingdom of Sweets. The second act of the ballet finds Clara being royally en tertained by the Sugar Plum fairy with a scries of dances, most of them named after good things to eat and drink. The Spanish dance is ior chocolate, the Arabian dance for coffee and the Chinese dance for tea. The ballet ends when a host of flowers dance for the delighted little girl and she is seen again, asleep under the Christmas tree, a smile on her face. Prospect Group Holds Initiation Prospect A Christmas party was held by the Pros pect Lady Lions December 12 when initiation ceremonies al so were conducted. Mrs. George Hubbard officiated as sisted by Mrs. Joe Joscphcn-son. The women brought ean;ui i foods for Christmas baskels and a gift exchange was hold. Mrs. Eugene Mui-rill was hostess In her home. The next meeting will he it the home of Mrs. Ralph Good on January 9 when dessert will be served. No board meeting is scheduled for Jan uary. Greenhorn Grange Party Plans Made Yreka A gift exchange and plans for the Grange Christinas parly were on the program for the Greenhorn Grange Home Economics club meeting December 14 In the home of Mrs. Lou Coles. About 20 members and guests attended. Mrs. Vayne llalston. retiring chairman, conducted the meeting. Mrs. Francis Schultt. chairman elect, presented gifts from the club to Mrs. Ralston for her service as chairman for the past two years. Plans for the Christmas party include treats for Ihc children. Committees were ap pointed for the event. Samples of favorite recipes with copiei of the recipes were exchanged. The January meeting will be In the home of Mrs. Clarence Robinson on West Miner street. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Lancefleld, Salem; and Miss Heather Neilson, a junior, is a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Duncan Neil son, Milwaulcie. Miss Carpenter Is expected to arrire this week end to spend the holi days with her family at their home on Foot hills road. Student Coming For Christmas Miss Karen Carpenter is ex pected to arrive this week end from the East to spend the holidays with her family. Miss Carpenter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dunbar Carpen ter, Foothills road, is a junior at Radcliffe college, Cam bridge, Mass. Also home for the holidays is her brother, Scott, who at tends The Thacher school, Ojai, Calif. The Carpenters' younger daughter Emily, at tends Hcdrick Junior High school. Students Sing Carols At Jackson The children at Jackson school have been busy the past few days caroling around the large Chrlsmas tree and lighted Santa in the main hall way. The caroling is done by different grade groups each day and for one session for grades five and six, a guest condutor is brought In whose identity remains a secret until his arrival. Special Christmas stories are being read to the primary groups by upper grade stu dents. All grades have been bringing canned food items to school to participate in the Red Cross food baskets. On Thursday e v e n 1 ng, December 13, at 7:45 p. m., the fifth and sixth grade students and choir presented a Christ mas cantata entitled "Childe Jesus". This program was held In the Jackson school auditor ium and was under the direc tion of the upper grade fac ulty. The Jackson school band and orchestra will present an assembly program December 20 at 1 p. m. in the school gymnasium. December 21 during the last half hour of the day Christ mas parties will be held in each room. Scout Adviser Is Honored At Luncheon A farewell luncheon was held on Friday, December 14, for Miss Florence Medford, Girl Scout district adviser, who is leaving professional Girl Scouting to go into busi ness with her father in Salem, Ore. Miss Medford, who has been with the Rogue Valley area council for nearly two years, will spend the holidays in Arkansas where she will renew acquaintances with classmates before proceeding to Salem. She will stop in Medford on her way back, and will also be available from time to time to help with the pro gram change training for the council. Miss Medford has worked as district director and coordinator through all the Rogue Valley districts, helping the leaders and com mittee members of the coun cil. Many farewell parties have been given her recently in Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass and Yreka. Among those given was one by Girl Scout Troop 78 of St. Mary's Neigh borhood in Medford, with 32 girls attending. The troop, led by Mrs. J. A. Carrara, sang many Girl Scout songs, play ed games and served refresh ments. Miss Medford was pre sented a gift by the troop. Members took advantage of her presence to ask many questions about the new Girl Scout program change that will soon be in effect. . 1 Will Entertain Families and friends of members of the Weatonka council, Degree of Pocahontas are invited to attend the group's annual Christmas pro gram Friday, December 21 at 8 p.m., at the Redman hall, Apple street. Treats will be provided for the children. A brief business meeting for the council will begin at 7:30 p.m. Winners Mrs. Janice Barr and Frank Dolenshek took first place in the regular play of the Camp White Veterans Bridge club December 14. They scored 30V4 points. Other winners were Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Gor don, second, 30 points, and Mrs. J. J. Finegan and Paul A. Hatton. third, 26Vs points. Annual Christmas Party Is Given By Kiwanians Medford Senior High school orchestra, under direction of John Drysdale, provided the program Wednesday for the annual Christmas luncheon of the Medford Kiwanis club. Wives were guests at the luncheon at Rogue Valley Country club. New officers of the Kiwani an Dames were introduced at the meeting. They are Mrs. Lawrence Buonocore, presi- Production Crew Given for Play The production crew for "The Beautiful People," which will be produced in late January by Thespian Troupe 358 of Medford High school, has been announced. The play will be presented in the arena theater. Room 61, under the direction of Mrs. Lenore Za pell. The production crew In cludes the stage manager, Christy Elmore; assistant stage manager, Mary Beth Ellis; student director, Heather Rode; lighting technician, Dave Billingsley; and sound technician, Sharon Hendrix. Marjory North is the prop erty manager, and her crew includes Anita Townsend, Marty Roberts, Penny Sage, Olivia Jonason, and Rosemary Turk. Tracy Blackstone is in charge of make-up; the prompters are Rhonda Farfan and Anna Richardson. The costume manager is Ann Dou blass and she will be assisted by Judie Brookman and Dar lene Mollers. Party Members of the Medford Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges will meet for their Christmas party and enter tainment Sunday, December 23 at 2 p.m.. in the Odd Fel lows hall. Ronald Rice will be in stalled as governor of the Pacific Northwest district and Dr. Merle Foland as lieuten ant governor of Division 15A. Both are Medford residents. Curtis Nesheim will be seated as president of the Medford club. Past President Paul Selby is chairman of the installation party.
