OREGON Talks To Break Newspaper Strike Deadlock Resume New York - UW - Striking printers and newspaper pub lishers today resume negotia tions aimed at breaking the contract deadlock which closed nine big New York dailies nearly two weeks ago. But prospects appeared dim lor settling the strike quickly, despite marathon bargaining sessions and the efforts ot fed eral mediators. Secretary of Labor W. Willard Wirtz has said it might go on all winter. After joint talks broke off nn Wednesday, Stephen 1. Schlossbcrg of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service said the two sides are "very far apart." ' Representatives for Local (i of the International Typo graphical Union and the New York Publishers Association, the management group, met separately following the face-to-face talks in the morning. ' The printers called the strike Dec. 8 against four of . the nine papers involved. By prior agreement, the five oth ers also closed down. Bertram A. Powers, presi dent of Local 6. said he would send his men back to work on 'five newspapers "with no strings attached while nego tiations continue." Offer Refused Powers said the publishers refused the offer. The newspapers, w h i c h have a combined circulation of 5.7 million, have said they could survive a long strike but not the union demands. The association has offered the printers a boost of $9.20 weekly in wages and fring benefits to be spread over two years. The union wants a wage-benefit package estimat ed at J.'IH.
