DECEMBER 19. 1962 B 9 Regional Roundup By Clave Twilchell Regional Editor Is the canyon about half way between Merlin and Gal ice in Josephine county sup posed to be called "Hellsgate" or "Hellgate"? We understand that the question of whether or not there should be an "s" in the middle of the name has been puzzling residents and gov ernment officials for some time. The Bureau of Land Manage ment sign at the bridge over the canyon calls it "Hellgate," but most other literature and signs in the area spell it with the "s" among these the Pacific Power and Light com pany signs put up last sum mer. Curious as to which spell ing if either, is correct, we contacted the Medford district office of the Bureau of Land Management and spoke with Bob Hostetter, resource man agement specialist. He indicated that even the bureau is undecided on the spelling. The latest BLM map of the area has it spelled "Hellgate," but a recent bu reau film refers to it as "Hells gate." The personnel In the district are pretty evenly di vided on the question, he said. Hostetter himself prefers spelling it with the "s," point ing out that if the name is in tended to mean the gateway to hell, then it ought to be "Hellsgate" (hell's gate). We feel inclined to agree with him. Most people we've talked to in the Merlin-Galice area are already calling it "Hellsgate" anyway. Hostetter added that the BLM office IS firmly agreed on the spelling of another bridge farther down the Rogue. It's to be known as "Almeda" and NOT as "Ala meda." Parents' Club Sets Parly for Thursday Hornbrook - Mr. Joe Tur bovsky, child psychologist from the Siskiyou county school office in Yreka, was guest speaker at the Decem ber meeting of the Parents' Club. This was an evening meet ing, held at that time in order thai fathers of school chil dren, as well as mothers might have the privilege of hearing Turbovsky speak on "Grading". However, a dis appointingly small crowd availed themselves of this op portunity. In other business, the group set the time for the annual school Christmas party for Thursday, Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. A program will be pre sented, then Santa Claus will make an appearance and dis tribute candy and fruit to the children. Room parties will be held on Dec. 21, which will be a minimum day and will mark the close of school for the holiday season. Hostesses for the December meeting of the club were Mrs. L. F. Madison and Mrs Lola Flackus. The next meeting will be held on Thursday Jan. 3, 1963, fit a time to be announced later. N. The painting on the Central Point City hall window was one of several painted by the students in the city business district. Art Students Paint Murals on Central Point Store Fronts Central Point The spirit of Christmas along the main street of Central Point was strengthened last week by the work of the Crater High school art department and participating merchants. Twenty-two students, under the supervision of Marvin Hayes, art teacher from Art I classes, designed and painted Christmas murals on the win dows of six local establish ments. These murals were a result of planned and scaled paint ings in the art classes and were chosen by a vote of the students as to the best pictures and the best location for each mural. The classes were divided into assigned groups and each group turned in their pictures for judging. The original stud ies were done in tempera paints and were transferred to the windows to scale and painted with a mixture of tempera and liquid soap. The project was received with such enthusiasm this 'year that other merchants have expressed a desire to ! have murals on their win dows. It is hoped that next year the students of Crater Central Point School Children To Bring Gifts For The Needy Central Point - Students of the Central Point Elementary and Junior High schools will co to the school gymnasium Friday morning arid leave their gifts for the "White Christmas" under the tree. The entire student body will sing carols and be enter tained by the sixth grade band and the junior high chorus. The boxes of food stuffs will then be packed and dis tributed during the afternoon of Dec. 21 to needy families in the Central Point area. Annual Meeting Of GH Chamber Slated Gold Hill-The annual meet ing of Gold Hill Chamber of Commerce will be held Thurs day, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m. in the city hall. At that time Richard Ab bott, president, will present a report of the past year's ac tivities. Donald Morrow, treasurer will give a report, and election of officers will be held. To be elected are the following officers: president; vice president; secretary; treasurer; and two directors. At the last meeting of the chamber it was decided by members that the regular Dec. 20 and Jan. 3 meetings will not be held due to the holi days, Christmas and New Years. Illinois Valley Programs Planned Illinois Valley - The Illi nois Valley High school will hold its annual Christmas program Thursday at 8 p.m. A concert Will be presented by the band and chorus plus some interesting surprises. The public is invited. Illinois Valley - The Illi nois Valley Grange will hold its annual Christmas party at the next meeting, Thursday, Dec. 20 at 6:30 p.m. This will be a potluck with a short business meeting at 7:30. County Deputy Herbert Rudd of Grants Pass will be there to install new officers and confer first and second degrees on new members. Ed Oliver will be in charge of the local program at the Bridccview Grange hall. He reported that in a letter to the State Highway com mission he had on behalf of the chamber thanked their de partment for the cooperation that has been extended the chamber when requests were made on matters of signing, access roads, advertising signs, etc. Abbott said it is gratifying to know that the small com munities along the route re ceive the same consideration as the larger cities. Community Christmas Tree Lights Go On in Eagle Point By DOTTIE HARBISON Mail Tribune Correspondent Eagle Point - Lights were turned on on the Eagle Point Community Christmas tree for the first time last Friday evening by members of the Eagle Point Lions club. The 25-foot Chirstmas tree is located in front of the city hall where it has been placed for the past few years. Prior to this location it was placed on the corner of Main and D sts. It has been sponsored by the Eagle Point Lions club for many years. Although there is no com munity party planned this year, everyone is urged to at tend the Christmas program being sponsored by the schools of Eagle Point at the primary gymnasium on Thurs day. Due to the fog that hamp ered travel to the Christmas tree for two years in a row, the community sing and Christmas party was can celled the past couple of years and children have had to trav el to Medford to see Santa Claus during the daytime. Ray Ragsdale was general tree chairman. The Eagle Point city crew aided In set ting up the tree and Darrell Copeland and Charles Martin were in charge of decorating the tree. 'Christmas Story' To Be Presented At Lone Pine School Lone Pine - "The Christ mas Story" will be presented Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Lone Pine school gymnasium. Instrumental solos will be presented between scene changing and a band prelude, under the direction of Rich ard Michaelis. All children will partici pate. Each grade will appear on stage, representing a scene from the Christmas story. Following the pro gram, Santa will appear and distrib ute treats, sponsored by the PTA. Lee Merriman, principal, urged parents to attend. Chil dren will be dismissed at the time of the program. Room parties and gift ex changes will be held on Fri day from 12:30 to 1:30 for primary grades and from 1:30 to 2:30 for intermediate grades. School will be dis missed following the parties until Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1963. Basketball practice has be gun, with Jack Brown coach ing. The first game is sched uled Thursday, Jan. 10. Mrs. Rachel Scheel, third grade teacher, has been un able to teach the past few days due to illness. She plans to return following the holi day season. Shasta Valley Club Reelects Officers Montague - Gene Breceda was reelected president of the Shasta Valley Community club during that organization's Dec. 4 meeting held in the club room of the Montague auditorium. Breceda conducted the ses sion at which time, also re elected to their respective posts wore Walt Bray, vice president, and Bculah Gor don, secretary. Mrs. Raymond Callahan was elected treas urer. In January, the club will elect new members to the board of directors. In other business, It was recommended that the com munity purchase a permanent Christmas tree. As matters now stand, the Montague Vol unteer Fire department and the city maintenance crew are responsible for the cutting and transporting of the tree. They also raise it and. trim it. The recommendation will be made to other organizations such as the Montague Parent Teachers association, the Montague Rotary club and the Shasta Valley Garden club. It was reported that the firm planting the tree will guarantee its growth. Also discussed was the an nual Thanksgiving Day dance. It was decided that the club will hold the dance on the Saturday following Thanks giving Day in 1963. The de cision was determined on the basis of the difficulty In ob taining help to handle the dance on a holiday. New Members Taken Into CP Lions Club Central Point - Leonard Carlson of the Phoenix Lions club conducted Initiation of new members at the meeting of the Central Point Lions club Dec. 11. Carlson, it was noted, was instrumental In the reorsani- zation of the Central Point unit not long ago. Franklin Gcbhard gave a report on the football ban quet, an annual affair spon sored by the Lions at Crater High school. The Eagle Point Lions club also sponsors the home light ing contest each year and res idents of the area are remind ed that their entries should be turned in at Jake Olsen's by Saturday, Dec. 22. Rogue River Schools Plan Christmas Program Thursday Rogue River An all-choral Christmas program will be presented Thursday by the students of Rogue River Ele mentary school and the high school chorus. All children will participate in the program at the elemen tary level. Many traditional carols will be sung as well as some unusual Chirstmas songs. The program will start at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Santa Claus will make his appearnce after the program to give out goodies to the children. The Illinois Valley High school band and chorus, under the direction of Van Johnson, presented a one hour concert for the student body and fac ulty of Rogue River High school Dec. 14. The band started the pro gram with a march "Storm King." Throughout the pro gram various Christmas num bers including "O Holly Night" were presented. The beautiful "Claire de Lune" by De Bussy was Included In the program. The high school chorus pre- Canfatct To Be Given By Eagle Point Church Friday at 7:30 p.m. Eagle Point - "The Manger King" will be presented in song as the Eagle Point Com munity Bible church choir presents a cantata Friday at 7:30 p.m. The cantata will be based on Christmas carols and re ligious hymns and will fea ture solos, trios, duets, and a quartet accompanied by the choir as well as entire choir numbers and specials by the men's chorus.
