WALT'S POOR MAN'S 00 TV Simply Coll 772-BB2I rja HOME CALLS Prison Director Has Praise (or Alcafraz Pair San Francisco - ll'PU - Fed eral Prisons Director James V. Bennett had wry praise for two bank robbers who won brief freedom from Alcatraz Prison Sunday night. But he stood firm in his belief that no one has escaped successfully from "The Rock" in San Francisco Bay. i Bennett, who flew from Washington to San Francisco less than 24 hours after John Paul Scott and D. Lee Parker broke out of the island prison, toured the installation Tues day to check "security and morale." He told a news conference there would be some changes in routine, but that the Alca traz staff was not to blame and there would be no charges or transfers. Scott, 35, became the first Alcatraz convict known lo have reached the mainland. He was picked up, numb with cold, on the San Francisco shore 2' miles from the island. Parker, 31, got only as far as a small rock 100 yards from the main island. The prison director said that when he first heard ot the escape "It seemed perfect ly incredible and still does to a very considerable extent." But he pointed out that Parker, "a very Intelligent man" who had completed three years of college, pulled "one of the most spectacular escapes in the whole annals of prisons" in departing from the Allen County, Ind., jail at one time. Bennett remained firm in his belief that five men who disappeared in pre v i o u s escape attempts from Alcatraz drowned in the cold turbulent waters of San Francisco Bay. "To this day," he said, "I don't think anyone escaped successfully." SAFETY NOTE Newark, N.J. - (UPD - To protect children, the New Jer sey Safety Council today urged drinkers to eat the solids in their cocktails. Mar tini olives and Manhattan cherries, the council explain ed, may tempt toddlers to "drain the glasses . . ."
