Events Women's News MKDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON Social Children's Hair Styles Influenced by Caroline By BAY PAULEY UPI Women's Editor New York (UPB - Another Kennedy - Ciroline - is set ting hur styles in the femin ine world. Sources in the children's bartering field agree that not itnce Shirley Temple s blonde ringlets and Margaret O Brlen's pigtails has any one very young lady had so much Influence on what other little Iris are wearing in hairdos "Let's iace it. Caroline's the number one child in the news,", said the styles direct or for the Helena Curtis Guild of Professional Beauti cians. "She's bound to in. fluence other children . , , er anyway, their mammas." "What Caroline wears has become a big factor," said a pokesman for Best & Com pany, a New York store whoso- children's barber shop trims between 40,000 and 50,- 000 heads per year. "Little girls are getting away from bangs." Bore Hairdos Sam The store's barber shop re ported hairdos for small boys unchanged, however - still short, crew, and mannish looking, even though Caro lines baby brother John, Jr., in recent photographs has hewn a healthy mop of long hair. Caroline's wearing a modi fication of an American clas sic for children - the Buster Brown. The hair is parted on the side and the long side is held in place with clip or bar rette. No bangs. The true Buster Brown, however, has a center part with bangs. But both types re cut chin length, are srtralght, and turned under lightly at the ends.: Just who cuts Caroline's hair is a well-kept Washing ton secret. Pamela Turnure ef the White House press staff aid the subject was in "that area" - meaning the private lives of the Kennedy children. Caroline's bob gets the en dorsement of Gerald McDon ald of Helene Curtis for its simplicity and ease of care. "These are what count in children's styling," said Ger ald, In a telephone interview from his Chicago headquar ters. The hair stylist, who has held 183 demonstrations play ing to live audiences totalling 250,000 so far tn 1962, always Includes child models in the shows. Shaping Important To Gerald, shaping is the key factor in a good haircut for a little girl. . Cut to the way the hair grows naturally - and this direction will show when the hair is damp - the "do" stands a better chance of staying neat. And small girls, as well as their ' mothers, do care about neatness and looking pretty, said the stylist. "Every mother looks for a natural curl in a child's hair,' he said. "They optimistically hope . . .but I don't think lit tle girls care about the curl They're more interested in bows and ribbons." Gerald opposes permanents for small girls because sim plicity of styling is preferable to a mass - of curls, and be cause their hair isn't mature. It has not developed the cen ter core, or medulla, that comes with growing up. Plxle Style He and the stylists at Best's said after the Caroline side part, the -next favorite style for little girls is the Pixie. The hair is cut in short, un even layers and isn't parted, but combed, like spokes of a wheel, from the center crown. This one does not lend itself to ornamentation, but is easy to keep, and Gerald said es pecially becoming to little brunettes. Children's hair styles re main in fashion, usually, for decades, unlike those of adults. One of the most en during "dress up" styles for little ladies is a slightly Vic torian arrangement fashion able for at least 60 years. Strictly for long hair, it sweeps up the face and catch es with a ribbon or headband. The hair then falls down the back. StralohUr Hair Smart Until about 1850, say styl ists at Curtis, the most popu lar variation was for long, sausage like curls falling down the back. Now, straight- er hair Is smarter. Another popular "dressy' do, said Best's, is the Top knot - the long hair swept up to the top of the head all around and shaped Into a flattened circle. j Braids have been child's hair style tor centuries ana reached their peak in popu larity in the 1940's when mov ie moppet Margaret O'Brien was stealing hearts on screens across the country. The Shirley Temple influ ence showed In the 1930's, when millions of little girls hoping to emulate her, slept every night on a headful of metal curlers. Every morning, then, doting mothers spent an hour or more combing each ringlet Into place. , "It will be a long time," said Gerald, "before we have another ringlet era. Fortu nately, for all concerned." Christmas Dance Set for Friday Security Benefit club plans a Christmas dance at the Pythian building Friday, December 21, from 8 p. m. until midnight.
