Newspaper Page Textalias, Houston Place 13 f 22 on AFL All-Star Team By NORMAN MILLER New York -fllPH- Halfback Abner Haynes of the Dallas Texans and 280-pound defen sive tackle Bud McFadin of the Denver Broncos both were chosen on the American Foot ball League AllStar team for . the third straight season to day by United Press Interna tional. Hayncs, a colorful star since the founding of the . league, and Carlton Cookie Gilchrist of the Buffalo Bills, who joined the AFL this year ' after eight seasons of Can ' adian football, were the most popular choices on the 1962 team. Hayncs and Gilchrist each attracted 20 votes from the panel of 24 AFL writers who .chose the All-Star team for UPI; McFadin was next with . 18 votes. The Texans and the Hous . ton Oilers, who meet next .Sunday tor the league cham- pionship, combined to place . 13 of the 22 players on the offensive and defensive teams. Each team in the league had "at least one representative. This year's team was chosen strictly according to the spe cialized functions which make up a pro football team in ac- tion. The panel of three writ ers from each league cities was required to vote for a "quarterback, two running backs, two pass catchers -flankers or split ends and ..one tight blocking end. The backfield thus was made up of Lcn Dawson of the Texans at quarterback; Hayncs and Gilchrist at the running back spots; Charlie Hcnnigan of the Oilers and Christ Burford of the Texans, Preps Slate Activity in Third week end of the high school basketball season and the last before the Christmas holidays will have another heavy schedule of games for teams of this area. Bend will be at Klamath Falls on Friday and the two clubs clash at Bend on Satur day. SM Meets Pacific Among the A-2s Eagle Point will he at home to Oakridge fnr games both week end eve nings. Rogue River will go to Central Point Saturday to engage Crater junior varsity. Crater jayvees host Pros pect varsity on Friday. Rogue River and Prospect opened the week's slate of varsity games this evening at Rogue River. Crater sophomores face the Eagle Point jayvees in the prelims to Eagle Point-Oak-ririue games. Freshmen games on Thurs day will include Phoenix at Eagle Point. Crater at Savage. Smith Giants Pass at HedricK and McLoughlin at North Grants Pass. Crater trosh will meet a Prospect team on Fri day. Southern Oregon college dropped the first of a two-game basket ball series with Humboldt State here last night, losing by a score of 63 to 44. The game was close for the first period, with Humboldt state ahead by one point 13-12 at the end of the first quart er. The California team then pulled ahead, leading 29-19 at the half and 40-29 at the third period. Big Game Hunt Applications Due Jan. 15 Portland-Oregon big game hunters interested in taking part in emergency big game hunts which may be held dur ing the 1963 calendar year have until Jan. 15 to file their county applications according to the game commission. Application should be made on a post card and the name, address and telephone number of the applicant plus the county applied for should be on the card. A hunting li cense is not necessary to file the application but is required if the hunter is called for an emergency hunt. Applicants are cautioned to file for only one county since duplicate or extra applications will be dis carded. Emergency big game hunts were authorized by the Iegis-' lature in 1957 to control crop damage, and since the need for such hunts cannot be pre dicted, county list of appli cants must be established at the first of each year. Actual experience during the past few years indicates there is little chance for a hunter to be called. However, to have this chance if it docs arise, a hunter's name must be on the list. After the applications clo.se on Jan. 15. a public drawing will be held to establish the order of eligibility for each county. This list will not be published but will be avail able for Inspection at game commission regional offices and the Portland headquar ters. Illinois,- eighth a week ago, advanced a notch to the No. Roadster Show February Event The 1963 Medford Roadster Show will be held on the week end of Feb. 9-10 at the National Guard .Armory in Medford." This exposition of automotive style and speed will be sponsored by South ern Oregon Timing associa tion. A number of the finest custom-built cars on the west coast will be displayed. Show officials are selecting entries for the exhibition from a four state area. Entry deadline is Jan. IS. Many of the entries will have values running into the thousands of dollars with un told hours spent in construc tion. Ingenuity and craftsman ship will be in great evidence. Owners go to great pains in details like upholstery, paint, and interior decorations and appointments. judges will award first, second and third place tro phies to the winners in some 25 classes of competition at the conclusion of the show. Several special awards will be made. A special feature will be a model car contest for those who build miniature replicas of full -sized autos. Modelers will compete in three age di visions and several classes for different types of models. Egg Production Is Progressing Portland - Egg production from salmon and trout at game commission hatcheries is progressing at a rapid rate and all indications point to reaching production quotas for next year's stocking of Ore gon s lakes and streams. Chris Jensen, chief of hatchery operations, reported 3,600,000 eggs already on hand at the end of October, and an additional 7,000.000 eggs reported taken since that time. Spring Chinook at Soda Springs yielded 226,660 eggs for the Rock Creek hatchery on the Umpqua. At the Mc- Leod station on the Rogue, 81,000 spring Chinook eggs were taken for the Butte Falls hatchery. More ' than 1,000 adult salmon were released from the McLeod station into Butte creek to spawn natural ly after the egg quota was reached. Of 275 spring Chi nook salmon examined at this station, 81 were of hatchery origin, Indicating about 30 per cent of the fish were from hatchery stocks.
