Publishers, Printers To Meet New York - IUPII - The New York Publishers Association and the striking printers union meet Tuesday in their first direct confrontation in almost a week in the 10-day old newspaper strike. Federal mediators, how ever, held little hope for a quick settlement of the stale mate which has closed nine metropolitan area news pnpers. Bertram S. Powers, presi dent of Local 67 of the Intcd national Typographical Union, issued a cautious state ment Sunday in which he in sisted that his union was "flexible and willing to nego tiate with an open mind." But Powers dimmed hopes for prourcss in the bogged down negotiations "until the publishers do something." "So far," he said, "they have indicated theirs is a fixed position." News About COMPLETES TRAINING Gary Keith Boyd, who has completed basic training at the U. S. Naval Training Cen ter, San Diego, has been as signed to Moffitt Airbase for the next eight months. Boyd has been visiting his mother, Mrs. Ruth H. Boyd, of 723 West Second it. After duty at Moffitt, Boyd will report to Port Hueneme, Cal if., for apprentice training for heavy equipment operator in the Seabees. GRADUATED Miss Karen Y. Ekberg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan L, Ekberg, 439 Lozier lane, was recently graduated as the outstanding trainee of her class after completing eight weeks of basic military train ing at the Women's Army Corps center. Ft. McClellan, Ala. Miss Ekberg, a private, was graduated from Medford High school earlier this year. WITH SQUADRON Army Pvt. Steven J. Hooey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman A. Hooey, Kerby, is serving with the 14th Armored Cav alry Regiment's Third Re connaissance Squadron which guards the northern sector of the East-West German border. He is assigned as a truck driv er in the squadron's Headquar ters troop in Bad Hersfeld, Germany. Hooey's wife, Myrna, lives in Grants Pass.
