IUVIIVK Medford high wrestling team meets its third rival of the season on Friday evening. The Tornado takes on the Roseburg Indians at Roseburg. First varsity match will be at 7:30 p.m. Coach Ralph Monroe said that some 27 or 28 grapplers will make the trip. Medford won over Reeds port and Marshficld last week while Roseburg nipped North Bend. Monroe pointed out that football players are making a good transition to the wres tling mat. All griddcrs but Greg Gandce, who is 1-1, are 2-0 in individual matches along with non - footballers Rick Orr, Mike Horton and Rod Smith. Tom Mctz, Terry Winetrout and Jeff Hardrath have two pins each. ' Steve Hall has moved up into the No. 1 spot at 130 pounds by beating out George Swartsfager. Schmall takes over at top spot at 136 for George McNair who has a knee infection. Turk Shoot On Sunday Medford Gun club will hold its pre-Chrislmas turkey and ham shoot on Sunday through out the day. Visitors are welcome and many prizes are offered, Elks lodge members will be among Dartlclpants. Lunch conces sion will operate all day. Floyd and Davis Young won the father and son event last Sunday. They had an 85 ; out of 100 aggregate. St. Mary's Will Face Riddle Here Dn ita second week end of the new basketball season St. Mary's high of Medford goes aeainst a coastal area foe and has a return engagement with a team It met last week. The crusaders oppose Pa cific at Langlois on Friday night and tangle with Riddle here on Saturday evening. Riddle beat St. Mary's 58 to 38 last week. Rebounding and the fast break have had attention this week. Coach Dick Paup also has had the Crusaders doing a lot of shooting. Aim is to overcome the coldness dis played against Riddle last week. Some work has been on defense. Paup Indicated that his probable starters will be the same as last week, Jim Cal houn, Mike Stinson, Pete Nau mes, Dave Young and Randy Corliss. N There will be a Junior var sity game here Saturday night but the Jayvees are not mak ing coast trip. The former high schools of Port Orford and Langlois were merged by the construc tion of Pacific high. The teams meet at 8:13 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Hcdrick gym. Preliminaries at 8:30 p.m. will match Eagle Point Jayvees with the Med ford Junior varsity on Friday and the Tornado and Ashland sophomores on Saturday. Dave Skelton, 5-11, and Earl Backman, 6-4, are the returned Wolverine regulars. John Lowery, 5-11, is the other letterman under Coach Chuck DeAutremont who moved up to the head post after serving as jayvee coach. DeAutremont, a former Southern Oregon college ath lete, describes his club as "very short" and "green really." Backman is the only 6-footer among the probable starters. The others on the opening five are Terry Stahel, 5-7, high scorer for the Junior varsity last season, and Dave Syverson, 3-9. Sixth man on the roster In Phil Peterson. Beat St. Francis The Wolverines will come here with just one game be hind them. They defeated St. Francis of Eugene 87 to 48 Tuesday. DeAutremont said that he was well satisfied with his team for Its first game. He said that they threw the ball away quite a bit but turned in lough second half defense. DeAutremont, with out a game of his own last week end, looked In on Medford. He commented that Medford showed plenty of speed and rebounded well. The mentor said that Medford showed more speed than the Wol verines. The Willamette coach, who also is head man for track and cross country, said, "I ex pect to see a lot of old friends out at ball games. They'd bel ter be (there)." Won Last Year Medford defeated Willam ette 63 to 48 here last year. It was a see-saw same for three quarters, in Ihe fourth period, the Black Tornado got numerous close in shots and made them pay off. They put in 10 field buckets in 15 tries. At the time of last year's game, the Wolverines were hit by flu. One regular and four other players did not see ac tion. Les Wright, then varsity coach did not make the trip to Medford. From the Black Tornado camp this week, Coach Frank Roelandt reported, "We look normal" and "nothing out standing." There seems to be sort of a lull after last week ends ef forts against Marshfield and North Bend but things are expected to perk up for the two week end engagements. He'll be in action again this week when the Black Tornado meets Wil lamette high here on Friday and Saturday nights. He had 17 points in last week's two games. Crater Will Oppose Grovers, Mt. Shasta Central Point - Three vet erans and a new head coach. That's part of the basketball picture at Cottage Grove where the Crater High school Comets will play one of their two basketball games this week end. The Comets go to Cottage Grove for a Friday evening engagement. O n Saturday Crater will play its first game of the season on its home court at Central Point. The adversary will be Mt. Shasta, Calif., whom Crater defeated last week end 88 to 58. The Lions of Collage Grove have one 6-8 player In one year letterman Merle Carpen ter. But a 5-1 1 1 a eager with two years of varsity exper ience could give them more trouble. He is Gary Voglcr, senior, who was n cog of the Lions as a sophomore. The othrr monogram man is Lou Bonzon, 8 feet. He is in his second year at Collage Grove following transfer from Grants Tass. Coach at Cottaae Grove is Lyle Fagnan. who was ele vated from junior varsity du ties. Fagnan is know n in this area as a former junior high mentor at Grants Pass. One nf Ills players this season is his son. L. J. Fagnan. Lions Hot The Lions were hot on Ihrir opening night. They whipped Reedsport 53 to 38 Saturday while making half of their shots from Ihe field, 23 of 46. Nonlettrrman Charles Olds led the scoring with 14 points end Botuon had 12. Voglcr put In nine. Pa. -OT- Coach Alex Bell drilled his Villa nova team on defensive ma neuvers Wednesday with an eye toward blunting All America quarterback Terry Baker of Oregon State In Sat urday's liberty bowl game. The workout was held at an indoor polo field at nearby Valley Forge Military acad emy. The squad will drill in doors again on Thursday to avoid the snow-glazed turf at Villanova Stadium. Drills will move outdoors to Phil adelphia Stadium Friday. The Oregon State squad was scheduled to leave by plane this morning for Phila delphia.
