Two regulars from last year
and one other letterman re
on the Willamette High school
basketball squad which will
oppose Medford in two week
end games here.
The teams meet at 8:13 p.m.
on Friday and Saturday at
Hcdrick gym. Preliminaries
at 8:30 p.m. will match Eagle
Point Jayvees with the Med
ford Junior varsity on Friday
and the Tornado and Ashland
sophomores on Saturday.
Dave Skelton, 5-11, and
Earl Backman, 6-4, are the
returned Wolverine regulars.
John Lowery, 5-11, is the
other letterman under Coach
Chuck DeAutremont who
moved up to the head post
after serving as jayvee coach.
DeAutremont, a former
Southern Oregon college ath
lete, describes his club as
"very short" and "green
really." Backman is the only
6-footer among the probable
starters. The others on the
opening five are Terry Stahel,
5-7, high scorer for the Junior
varsity last season, and Dave
Syverson, 3-9. Sixth man on
the roster In Phil Peterson.
Beat St. Francis
The Wolverines will come
here with just one game be
hind them. They defeated St.
Francis of Eugene 87 to 48
Tuesday. DeAutremont said
that he was well satisfied with
his team for Its first game.
He said that they threw the
ball away quite a bit but
turned in lough second half
defense.
DeAutremont, with out a
game of his own last week
end, looked In on Medford.
He commented that Medford
showed plenty of speed and
rebounded well. The mentor
said that Medford showed
more speed than the Wol
verines. The Willamette coach, who
also is head man for track
and cross country, said, "I ex
pect to see a lot of old friends
out at ball games. They'd bel
ter be (there)."
Won Last Year
Medford defeated Willam
ette 63 to 48 here last year.
It was a see-saw same for
three quarters, in Ihe fourth
period, the Black Tornado got
numerous close in shots and
made them pay off. They put
in 10 field buckets in 15 tries.
At the time of last year's
game, the Wolverines were hit
by flu. One regular and four
other players did not see ac
tion. Les Wright, then varsity
coach did not make the trip
to Medford.
From the Black Tornado
camp this week, Coach Frank
Roelandt reported, "We look
normal" and "nothing out
standing." There seems to be sort of a
lull after last week ends ef
forts against Marshfield and
North Bend but things are
expected to perk up for the
two week end engagements.
