ME0FOHD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OHEGOH FRIDAY. DECEMBER IWi Secrecy Surrounds Trial of Holla Nashville, Tonn. - H'PIt - A strengthened force of U. S. marshals wrapped a tight se curity cloak around the fed eral court trial of Teamsters President James R. Hoffa to day despite the objection of defense attorneys. Judge William E. Miller or dered six extra bailiffs in the courtroom after a slender young laborer attempted to shoot down Hoffa with an air pistol during proceedings Wednesday. Hoffa was struck by two of the pellets but said he was not hurt. His assailant, who Identified himself as Warren Swanson of Washington, D.C., was held on a contempt of court charge. Miller also ordered the mar shals to search everyone en tering the courtroom for the remainder of the SI million conspiracy trial. He locked up the jury Wednesday night and said he would decide today whether to leave it locked up for the duration of the trial which is now in its seventh week and is expected to last until Christmas. J f A v i - 1 AS I 1 ft , 491 Cases of Flu Reported in State Portland - JPH The State Board of Health said Thurs day 491 persons in Oregon were reported to have the flu during the week ending last Saturday. The board said the figure was considerably lower than the number of cases reported for the comparable week last year. Annual total to dale is 24, 026 cases which compares with 20.03B a year ago. The health board said, however, the higher figure for this year is inflated by a rash of cases in January which resulted from an outbreak in Decem ber of 1961. NO UMBRELLA? Gretchen, above, who visited the Mail Tribune newsroom Wednes day, looked positively stunning in her win ter outfit ... a checked coat and rubber boots front and rear. Gretchen is owned by Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Newman, Holiday tnn. Medford. Mrs. Newman explained to Gret chen that the boots and coat were to keep her from catching cold, but, from the look on her face, Gretchen still feels a little silly in them , . . particularly when getting her picture taken. From Page 1 Airport Rental Rates Are Included in Controversy Among other things, Doug lass alleged that rental rates charged by the city are out of line with those charged by comparable airports else where in the state. He sug gested the city contact the state board of aeronautics for data on rates charged by other cities. Gutjahr said today that "rental rates now in effect (at the Medford airport) are comparable with rates at other similar airports and were established by the coun cil in 1958." The airport man ager pointed out that "the first operator to be charged the revised schedule of rental rates was able to operate a highly successful and profit able business." Douglass said that a "stand ard of operation at the airport is desperately needed." He said the unfair competi tion is coming from private plane owners who do their own maintenance work and who engage in instruction and charter flights. Correeliva Action Asked "Some corrective action is absolutely essential," he de clared. Gutjahr responded to the accusation by saying, "There is no evidence that aircraft have been repaired or over hauled in places other than repair shops. "As concerns private chart er flights and instruction, the airport, is a public airport available for use by the gen eral public. The practical dif ficulty of determining which of more than 100 daily flights involve a monetary considera-; tion should be obvious. The; airport department is not staffed to undertake such reg ulations, if indeed they were feasible under the law," Costs Quoted in Leas Gutjahr underscored that Rogue Flying Service had entered into the lease in full knowledge of the rental rates, that presumably "such costs were included in the price of products and services sup plied by the firm to its cus tomers, and that the account had been delinquent during the past two years. "No satisfactory proposals for settlement of the debt have been marie by the offic ers of Boguc Flying Service during that lime," Gutjahr said.
